25.01.2022 F E S T I V E S T R E S S | The silly season is well and truly upon us with the Christmas break drawing closer. Although this time of year is meant to be full of joy and happiness, in reality if you’re experiencing stress, anxiety, disappointment or loneliness you’re certainly not alone . You can often feel as though the holiday period is time when you need to please the ones you love and impress the ones you don’t. Be kind to yourself this festive season and reduce these, and any other, expectations upon yourself . Take time to recognise and alter behaviours that contribute to your stress to help you get through the holiday period

19.01.2022 S L E E P | It is one of our bodies best friends. Quality sleep patterns enhance both physical and mental health and wellbeing. Sleep is the way that our bodies reboot and recover from stress. A disturbance in our sleep patterns (i.e. insomnia) is a symptom of an underlying problem. Encouraging sleep patterns back to our regular rhythm encourages recovery from depression and anxiety WHAT CAN WE DO? | One tip to improve your sleep is to create a 20 minute sleep routine every night before bed. This may include quiet activities such as herbal tea, aromatherapy or even putting your phone away. This encourages the relaxed and calm state that your brain needs to fall asleep

19.01.2022 It’s never too late to begin the steps towards the change that you want to make in your life Sometimes change can be daunting, just take it one day at a time. And if that’s too overwhelming, take it one hour at a time or even one minute at a time. Eventually, you’ll begin to see the change that you desire in life grow

14.01.2022 This is what getting it out looks like in the process of healing and growth. There is something very cathartic and therapeutic about journaling your thoughts and getting them out of your body and onto paper, whether that be in the form of art or writing or both Sometimes the process of what happens after your thoughts are on paper is just as important. Do you keep your thoughts locked away in a safe place? Do you rip up your thoughts afterwards? We have even experienced clients burning their artwork in their process [obviously in a safe and contained manner]. It’s about what feels right for you

14.01.2022 Sometimes art therapy is all about making mess Incorporating the felt sense associated with materials such as slime can allow clients to feel more relaxed, and encourage the emotive side of their brain to open up for them to explore This can be especially beneficial for clients who are stuck in repetitive cognitions or describe themselves as stuck in their head

13.01.2022 Hey everyone We thought it might be time to re introduce ourselves and give you a chance to get to know us a little bit more! I’m Tessa one half and co-founder of Insight Art Therapy. I am an art therapist and counsellor based in Melbourne, Australia. My passion is working with children, adolescents and young adults and have begun practicing at our beautiful space in Camberwell. ... When working with clients I take a person centered, strengths based approach. This just means I work together, alongside my clients with the belief that you are the expert of your experience. Beyond my therapy practice, I am completing my postgraduate thesis in psychology. Anyway, thank you for being here, and listening to what we have to offer. We appreciate and value your support! Tessa @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

13.01.2022 Today is Are You Okay Day @ruokday in Australia We have previously spoken about the vulnerability associated with acknowledging pain. Vulnerability is not a weakness, vulnerability is a strength and a power It’s okay to not be okay Not only do we encourage you to ask those around you Are you okay? today and every other day, but we also encourage those struggling with pain to try and acknowledge where they are at when someone reaches out. It can be so much easier to respond with the usual I’m good or fine script and show the world a beautiful smile instead Take the hand of those reaching out and try to open up about your mental health one step at a time. Be very proud of yourself when you do as it’s a scary step to take, show the world your vulnerability, strength and power

11.01.2022 Self love is all about valuing your own happiness and wellbeing. It is an unconditional acceptance and compassion toward one self. Self love comes from a non judgmental space allowing you to view the self as as worthy, valuable and good Self love however doesn’t appear overnight, it’s something that we are constantly building upon. Build a brick on the layers of your self love with some compassionate thoughts today Words from @iambrillyant

10.01.2022 Art making isn’t bound by specific materials. Using nature in art therapy can be incredibly grounding and a great way to connect with the self This art therapy activity in particular utilises the metaphor of a nest to explore bonds within your family system

09.01.2022 Wise words of @brenebrown | When empathy and understanding are present they have the ability to out shine and out live feelings of shame

09.01.2022 For both compassion and forgiveness we need some level of self-acceptance. To show compassion for or to forgive others, we first have to be able to give ourselves the same kindness . COMPASSION is the desire to alleviate the suffering of others and making space for others to have their experiences without attaching our reactions to them. . FORGIVENESS is simply letting go...

08.01.2022 B A T H T I M E | Did you know that having a bath can improve your mental wellbeing? . Research into the psychological benefits of a bath shows that bathing improved general psychological wellness radically. There was a significant drop in feelings of pessimism... and increases.. in the internal feeling of pleasurability . Instead of rushing through a shower, maybe take time to have a bath. Go that step further and add Epsom salts, some drops of lavender and even some petals for that extra step

08.01.2022 R E S I L I E N C E | Resilience is all about the process of challenging our traumatic experiences, adapting and growing from them. Resilience can be cultivated and strengthened. Part of that process involves helping you realize the ways in which you are already resilient - reflecting upon your own personal strengths that you have called on to manage difficult or traumatic periods of your life

05.01.2022 B R E A T H E | We all experience those times where everything becomes too much. In these chaotic moments it can feel as though everything is happening around you, and that you’re starting to loose control. Remember to allow a moment in time for yourself... . Take time for you, take time to find calmness and quiet in the chaos around you, and take time to find what it is you need to get through .

04.01.2022 M E S S Y | Let your self allow the mess, welcome it with open arms. Sometimes our job as Art Therapists simply means providing the space for clients to be messy, sit with the mess, and be curious about the mess. We are often too quick to judge it as wrong or bad. . Sometimes mess just has to be mess for a while, try make a little this weekend!

04.01.2022 B O U N D A R I E S | Sometimes it’s hard to realize where your boundaries lie when it comes to the people you care about, whether that be friends, family or a partner. It’s difficult to distinguish how much to be there for someone close to you when they begin to drain you of your energy . It is okay to begin to set boundaries with those around you in order to look after your own self. . Figure out the boundaries you want to put in place and acknowledge to yourself why... they need to be there. Explore whether there are any barriers to these new boundaries. Think ahead to how this person/s may respond to these new boundaries and brainstorm your own response. Acknowledge and applaud your inner strength, because it isn’t easy See more

04.01.2022 P E R F E C T I O N I S M | It can be seen in constantly striving for more, in expecting things of yourself that you’d never expect from others, or in working yourself to exhaustion to build your self worth. . When perfectionism is in charge it can be a never ending cycle; you just keep going and going even after reaching your original goal. . It makes perfect sense that we often feel and think this way as our culture puts a lot of pressure on us to be perfect. It is very eas...y to get caught up in all that pressure, and forget all the great, unique things about ourselves. . So take a moment to stop and appreciate where you are in the now. Think about all the great and unique things about yourself and think about all the steps that you’ve taken to get yourself here See more

03.01.2022 B E P R O U D O F Y O U | Having pride is not a bad thing. Being proud of yourself highlights a strong sense of self-worth and nurtures self esteem . We often don’t give ourselves that moment to sit with and enjoy prideful accomplishment when we have done something well. .... Think of the last thing that you did that made you feel proud, no matter how big or small. Take it in. You did the thing. Be proud. No one can take that away from you See more
