24.01.2022 Clint recently performed a very interesting procedure on a young cat noted to have haematemesis. An abdominal ultrasound identified a large broad based pedunculated mass growing in the antrum of the stomach. Endoscopy confirmed a large multilobulated hyperaemic mass. Using an electrosurgical snare connected to a diathermy machine, this mass was removed via gastroscopy. The cat recovered well and histopathology on the mass returned as a benign hyperplastic polyp. This procedur...e is a minimally invasive method to reduce patient morbidity and optimise outcome. Ultrasound and endoscopy photos are posted below and here is a link to two cool videos to watch the procedure live in action. https://vimeo.com/441519431 https://vimeo.com/441521968 #veterinaryscience #cat #gastroscope #electrosurgery #snare #polypectomy #medicinespecialist #mobile

16.01.2022 Spring loaded mouth gags are a recognised cause for cats to wake up with cortical blindness. This unnecessary complication is thought to arise from excess tension created by the springs, leading to Maxillary artery compression. The subsequent hypoxia results in central blindness that can be temporary or permanent. My recommended effective and economical option is to use nail clippers to cut a 25g needle cap into 20mm length and use this between the canine teeth instead. Studies have shown that this length is safe. . . . Insight Mobile Veterinary Diagnostics #cat #feline #blindness #mouthgag #mobilevet

09.01.2022 Here is a parathyroid mass I was able to identify on ultrasound when working up a middle aged dog with hypercalcaemia that presented for PU/PD. Unfortunately we no longer have a small animal PTH assay available in Australia - so parathyroid ultrasound is an essential component of working up hypercalcaemia. How would you treat this dog? . . . #vet #medicine #ultrasound #specialist #mobilevet #parathyroid #hypercalcaemia #dog

07.01.2022 Portosystemic shunts in cats are a much rarer occurrence than in dogs. Their incidence is reported to be 0.025% and when they occur, they are most commonly extra hepatic (75%). They can present with clinical signs of CNS disease from hepatic encephalopathy, GIT disease or urinary tract disease from urate stones. However cats do have two unique presenting problems, and the cat pictured below, that Clint assisted in diagnosing, did have each of these two signs; ptyalism and copper coloured irises. Bile acids are the recommended blood test to confirm liver insufficiency followed by abdominal imaging to confirm the presence of a shunt. Surgical attenuation is challenging and can carry a mortality rate up to 20%. #cat #portosystemicshunt #vet #veterinary #medicalspecialist

04.01.2022 A young female Golden Retriever had a work up with us for recurrent UTIs and haematuria. What condition can you see in this video as the cause?

03.01.2022 BE (Balloon Esophageal) tubes are a very new and exciting aid in management of Oesophageal strictures in dogs and cats. Typically strictures require multiple dilations involving many anaesthetics, with costs quickly adding up. Furthermore, feeding can be challenging with the structure in place. The BE is an indwelling Oesophagostomy tube with a inflatable balloon that is placed across the stricture that can remain distended at incremental diameters/pressures to gradually dilate the stricture. The benefits include the requirement for only one GA whilst permitting O tube feeding as well. Clint is trained in placing and managing these which are ordered custom size from the USA.
