25.01.2022 I've been on site at SkyCity Casino Adelaide recently shooting for the lighting and electrical contractor. It's all about glitz, glam and, well, a bit of gaudy to boot. Can't share any images yet but I look forward to their release by the client. Many of the aspects of the project are very impressive. Stay tuned. :)

24.01.2022 Hey! This is happening.

24.01.2022 I just updated my Vimeo home page. A lot of my timelapse work is posted to Vimeo because: 1. The video streaming is top notch. 2. YouTube tends to attract a lot of the kind of traffic I don't want.... Feel free to take a look, watch some videos, leave a comment. Some videos may be locked off because they were uploaded to Vimeo for client approval and aren't ready for public consumption. https://vimeo.com/chrisoaten

23.01.2022 Some important news from my Divine Intervention event page.

23.01.2022 It's my great pleasure to reveal the project to which I've given two years of my life - the redevelopment of Her Majesty's Theatre, the grand dame of Grote St. She is beautiful. To those whom, for whatever reason, lamented the project, I say you need to hold your judgment until opening night. ... To the army of tradies who turned the tired old dear into a theatre for the 21st century, I salute you. It was a challenging project for all involved. I witnessed your frustrations and I endured the challenge alongside you but I applaud your commitment to delivering a magnificent theatre. It was a grind for everyone but you saw it through. And to those who at some time in the not too distant future will enjoy a performance there, I'm certain you'll find it a wonderful experience. To my commercial partners at Hansen & Yuncken and Adelaide Festival Centre, I sincerely thank you for the opportunity to be involved with this project and I will always regard it a great privilege to have been able to contribute. This is not over, yet. There is still work for me to do. But today, I want to celebrate this achievement.

23.01.2022 While 2020 has been a shocker year, it marks a turning point for Insight Visuals with the imminent release of the completion timelapse of a dearly held project, the Her Majesty's Theatre Redevelopment, marking a series of great successes. With promising opportunities on the horizon, it seems like a good time now to take a look back on the work that's laid a solid foundation for growth.

22.01.2022 I just collected the prints from Atkins Pro Lab. Will commence hanging tomorrow. How excitement!!!

22.01.2022 I'm very pleased to finally be able to release this timelapse video after having to wait for the clients to enjoy the "first bite" of it following yesterdays' media launch. Fun fact: while the 410 seconds of this video comprises 20,500 frames, there were actually 170,580 timelapse frames captured. Click on through to my Vimeo page to watch it. Please, if you can, stream it in 4K. ... https://vimeo.com/415272251

22.01.2022 I visited Kay Brothers Winery the other day as a reconnaissance exercise to see the region in its winter coat and check how the sun rises over the valley as well as take a look from above with a drone. McLaren Vale decided to put on a lovely morning for photography and without very much trouble I captured some lovely vision. Being winter, the morning was pretty crisp but I imagine this spot will be delightful in spring. This is the winery where Ill be showing my Divine Inter...vention exhibition from September 11 as part of the Shimmer festival of photography. The exhibition features images of the restoration of the St Peters Cathedral pipe organ, along with an associated number of images enabled by the scaffolding put in place for the restoration works. Sounds dry, I know, but I am every bit as proud of these splendid images as I am of anything Ive ever done. You dont have to wait until September to visit the winery, though. Cellar door tastings are now operating. Book in for a wine flight and enjoy that magnificent view from the cellar door. Its arguably the best in the vales. Why not go to their web site now and book in for a wine flight? Show my exhibition partner some love, yeah? kaybrothers.com.au/visit-us

21.01.2022 Flyers ready? Check. Print order at lab? Check. FB Event page? Check. Venue ready? Check.... All we need to do now is hang the works and welcome the visitors.

21.01.2022 Fun fact. Adelaide Festival Centre had a window of just 24 hours for me to come on site to shoot and then deliver a selection of images for their press kit to be offered to media today at their press event. https://glamadelaide.com.au/first-look-her-majestys-theat/

18.01.2022 Well, wasn't that something to see today in Adelaide?

17.01.2022 Recently, I put the word out that due to the lull in business caused by the pandemic crisis I had some idle timelapse cameras looking for something to do and invited any community groups with something they'd like captured to put their hands up for some pro bono work. The offer was responded to with this terrific project at Alberton, the story of which was picked up this week by ABC Online. I still have an idle camera if anyone else is interested. :)

17.01.2022 I'm thrilled to be showing my Divine Intervention exhibition at Kay Brothers in McLaren Vale as my contribution to the Shimmer Festival of Photography. This video shows the winery in its winter coat but with Shimmer commencing on the 11th of September, the beautiful South Australian spring weather should be kicking in. Plan to visit Divine Intervention, my photographic dedication to St Peter's Cathedral and its pipe organ restoration project, combine it with a wine flight whi...le you're there, and stay on to visit other exhibitions in the festival showing at selected venues in the region. Music excerpt from an original composition by Daniel J Ross. The Facebook event page is here: https://www.facebook.com/events/284513286140263/ You can check out the program here: https://www.onkaparingacity.com/shimmer/Home

17.01.2022 Great to see my portrait of the St Peters Cathedral organ casing being used to support an interpretive on permanent display at the cathedral. They didnt forget the photographer credit, either. So many people do, you know, and any pro photographer will tell you it really grinds our gears. A reminder, too, that I have an exhibition this year as part of the Shimmer Festival of Photography, which features my documentation of the organ restoration. Sounds dry, I know, but the subject is pretty special.

17.01.2022 The COVID-19 pandemic has put a tricky spin on everything, including planning for the Shimmer Exhibition in September. I went to Kay Brothers today where my exhibition will be held and discovered that rethinking print sizes and placements needs to be done to account for distancing requirements. Next week, the Shimmer exhibition organisers will make a final planning announcement to exhibitors. But my planning is well underway. Ill be making announcements about artist talks and openings in due course.

16.01.2022 What a week it's been. So many things came together to fit so perfectly it was enough to wonder if someone was looking over me. It was my mother's birthday yesterday so perhaps she lent a hand from the other side. Here's some BTS to share... The only thing that didn't quite go to plan was this facade hero shot of Her Majesty's Theatre. The bar furniture went in only on the day before I had to deliver the press kit images, which meant I had only two opportunities to shoot the... facade with the theatre actually looking ready for patrons. On the night before, the combination of traffic and a slight technical hitch during capture meant that shot wasn't so good but, sadly, it was the one that went into the press kit. I shall have to live with the embarrassment of that forever, I suppose. That's just the way it goes sometimes. But on the same day as the press kit images were delivered to the client (a set of images I had to shoot and deliver in a 24hr turnaround, BTW) the sunset on that day was a stunner, so of course I set up once again for the shot but this time I nailed it, despite the "rush hour" traffic, which at this time of year coincides with the very short window available for that "golden hour" imagery. And so here it is, though not for the last time. I estimate I've spent at least 18 hours standing in front of this building over the last couple of years, at least often enough for Tony O'Connell, the butcher at the Grote St end of Central Market, to now know my face well enough to stop for a chat. In a few weeks or maybe sooner, I'll be standing before the Grand Dame of Grote St once again for the "activation" shots of her.

16.01.2022 I'd love for you to visit my "Divine Intervention" exhibition showing at Kay Brothers Winery in McLaren Vale from September 11 as part of the Shimmer Festival of Photography. "Divine", by the way, is how I describe the sound of the pipe organ at St Peter's Cathedral, which features at the core of this exhibition as I captured images of its restoration by a team from Durrey organ builders Harrison and Harrison. "Intervention" describes the effort to make that wonderful sound ...a reality, or if you like, the role I played in documenting it. Further to images of the pipe organ restoration are images gathered of seismic proofing works at the cathedral, fulfilling one of the greater purposes of photography, which is to take the viewer somewhere they could not otherwise go to see that which they could not otherwise see. There will be issues to consider with social distancing requirements and I'll share advice on this in due course. The program is online at: https://www.onkaparingacity.com/shimmer

15.01.2022 Ain't she something? I'll post a link to the timelapse soon. I reckon I've earned a holiday.

14.01.2022 Valued client Hansen Yuncken recently asked for some shots of the SkyCity Casino project for their annual review. Not a big ask. With such a big, shiny addition to the Adelaide riverside project, all that a good result was in need of was a perfect sunrise. Those rowers didn't go astray, either.

13.01.2022 When you do your sixth shoot for a client and they say: "You know that high school you shot for us? You know we won a national award with that submission, right?" True story.

13.01.2022 Tomorrow, I begin hanging my Divine Intervention exhibition at Kay Brothers Winery. In preparing for this, I came across a promo image used for my previous outing at the Shimmer Festival of Photography when I screened a timelapse video at Pirramimma Winery back in 2016. I note with some amusement that this stripped-in composite of a timelapse capture is now a "thing" on Instagram; a visual effect popular with timelapsers. Gotta love it when you start a trend, right? ;)

12.01.2022 Would love you to come see my Shimmer exhibition at Kay Brothers Winery from September 11. Come see all the fabulous photographers contributing to Shimmer this year. But most of all, dont miss mine! Divine Intervention features imagery captured during the refurbishment of the St Peters Cathedral pipe organ. The image on view is a detail from a collective print. The various marks in the stonework are the various "signatures" of the stonemasons who built the cathedral. Thank...s to St Peters Cathedral and Atkins Pro Lab for the support that made this exhibition possible. Program via https://www.onkaparingacity.com/shimmer/Home #shimmerfestival #onkaparingaarts

12.01.2022 With the timelapse assignment of the Her Majesty's Theatre project now behind me, there remains quite a few tasks ahead of me before I can regard this project as completely done with. For a start, there's the completion photography yet to be done. There is also all the little fun side jobs I set aside while in the thick of the job. Such as this one. A timelapse selfie. The 237 frames that make up this short video exist because I left the camera running while the scaffolding crew took a dinner break and I decided to entertain myself with detail shots of the stage rigging.

11.01.2022 A friend whose integrity I respect posted today that he's leaving Facebook following the channel's refusal (on Zuckerberg's direction) to not do anything about Trump's inflammatory posts. It set me to thinking and I, too, can't persist with a platform that enables the divisiveness and fascist rhetoric and actions emanating from the White House. That said, I value the relationships I have with people on this platform. Facebook has become my virtual water cooler and it's mostly been a lot of fun, so I'm not vacating immediately. I'm looking for an alternative. When I'm comfortable there, I'll let you know, and I hope you'll follow.

11.01.2022 I've been so focused on my usual timelapse work and my Divine Intervention exhibition that last night's visit to the recently refurbished Lady Symon House came as a breath of fresh air with the chance to shoot some sport, which is something I've always enjoyed doing. Here, the University of Adelaide is using the new facility for training, having moved back to campus very recently after training for some time at Thebarton. I reckon this most regal of sports looks perfect inside the Lady Symon House. I caught a lot of action but this is the kind of shot I find really satisfying, with the camera isolating a person in the sporting arena who is the least involved in the physicality of the sport, though of course providing an important role as referee, framed nicely by the instruments of the sport. Neat, huh?

08.01.2022 The Shimmer Festival of Photography has concluded but I’m very pleased to advise my Divine Intervention exhibition will continue to hang at Kay Brothers winery in McLaren Vale until mid-November. If you’ve already come to see it, thank you. If you haven’t, you really should.

08.01.2022 I'm not a wedding photographer. Not my bag at all. My daughter, however, is a natural. Occasionally, I help out if she has a booking in Adelaide. As I did with this wedding. However, I deserve little credit here. You can check her work out at and maybe sling a booking her way at https://til-death.com/

08.01.2022 This is happening. I hope you all enjoyed your sleep-in this morning. ;)

07.01.2022 It was with great disappointment that I learned today my timelapse work on Her Majesty's Theatre needs to be put on hold while stakeholders figure out their media and promotions planning in the midst of the shifting goal posts of the COVID-19 crisis. It was a good thing I was doing that thing I do every now and then to counter my immersion in the industrial photography space, which has been pretty intense the last couple of years. https://spark.adobe.com/page/5RylYh3C2TvZV/... #fleurieupeninsula

07.01.2022 What a day! Started out hoping to catch some emotive wintery shots at sunrise at Kay Brothers Winery where Im having my photography exhibition in September. Managed that, along with some drone video capture. Then, on the way to home base, I caught wind of the massive fog over Adelaide and consequently beelined to Mt Lofty to shoot some timelapse. Ill post that later today. In the meantime, Im wondering why this plane wasnt diverted from Adelaide. Others were.

07.01.2022 Print orders for my Divine Intervention exhibition at Kay Brothers Winery will begin to flow to Atkins Pro Lab this coming week. It's probably the most fun and fraught exercise a photographer undertakes and I'm looking forward to working with their brilliant print technician, David. Atkins Pro Lab, along with St Peter's Cathedral, have provided sponsorship and support for this exhibition, without which it would not have been possible. Fun fact: the exhibition title is not a p...roclamation of a miracle. "Divine" refers to the magnificent sound of a pipe organ in full flight; "Intervention" pays respects to the small army of people who intervened to protect the organ from further decay and restore to its full glory. You know, having once been a newspaper sub-editor, I can't resist a play on a popular phrase to bring attention to an event. Sosumi. #shimmerfestival #onkaparingaarts

07.01.2022 The long weekend is coming up and what could be better than heading down to wine country, taking in some photography exhibitions from the Shimmer Festival of Photography program, enjoying some lovely weather and a beautiful drive and topping it off with some nom noms at any number of lovely eateries in and around McLaren Vale. My exhibition for Shimmer is at Kay Brothers winery. It's really quite lovely and I'm very proud of this body of work. Gavin Blake, director of the Cen...Continue reading

07.01.2022 I'd love for you to read my Linkedin article offering some insight to my involvement with the Her Majesty's Theatre redevelopment project.

06.01.2022 Im back on North Tce again on a regular basis until December timelapsing an impressive addition to the Cancer Research Institute, the construction of which I captured for the University of South Australia. As chance would have it, I still have on my phone one of the progressive edits I did for that project. So of course Im sharing it.

05.01.2022 Only a few weeks away.

05.01.2022 Back on site this morning at the Norwood Morialta High School project for LendLease and Swanbury Penglase Architects. It’s a far cry from the glamorous shoot at SkyCity recently for NSG Boffa but it’s work. And I’m good at it.

03.01.2022 Thrilled at the opportunity to capture completion imagery for @SkyCity contractor #NSGBoffa. A beautifully appointed hotel and a glitzy casino operation plus coverage of the electrical infrastructure works made it a challenging but ultimately satisfying shoot. Certainly, a great study in top shelf lighting solutions, with spectacular fittings imported from around the world. The photos in this post are only a fraction of the more than 100 images captured for the client. #fujifilm #canon #gfx50s #5dsr #skycity #casino #skycityadelaide @hansen_yuncken #construction #commercialphotography #adelaidephotographer #adelaide #southaustralia

02.01.2022 These fog events aren't unheard of during an Adelaide winter but they're something to see when they do roll in. This was captured at Mount Lofty Summit with its excellent view over the city.

02.01.2022 The Queen Adelaide Room refurbishment at Adelaide Town Hall was one of the proudest moments of my professional career. An excellent job by the tradies responsible for the work and a very satisfying documentation on my part, along with music perfectly toned to accompany the timelapse work. A big thanks to Daniel Joshua Ross for that. The local press covered it, too. Here's the timelapse at the heart of this story: https://vimeo.com/216753422

01.01.2022 Earlier this year, I was proud to release my timelapse documentation video of the Her Majesty's Theatre. At about seven minutes duration it demanded a (relativey) long span of attention from viewers, which is why I held a three-minute version in reserve in case my clients thought it was too much to ask of an internet audience. Here's that three-minute version. I'm a fan. :) https://vimeo.com/425841328
