22.01.2022 Hey Insight youth! Todays Proverbs reflection is from Matt and it is a very short one on Proverbs 16:32. Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self- control than one who takes a city. Upon reflection, with this passage in mind, alongside what we have learnt from the Scott Petty Little Black Book, I find this passage speaks volumes particularly in how we respond to certain situations. Keeping in mind the four voices of decision making, this passage further highli...ghts that checking choices in contrast with what God says in scripture is a very wise idea, we shouldnt be hasty but rather we should be patient. The terms used in this passage also jump out to me as a warrior to me is read as someone with respect and authority which to me and so many others in our world sounds quite nice however we read that it is rather better to be a person of patience than a warrior, we should be striving to have self-control of ourselves developing our patience and coming to God in prayer asking him for help as we try to be patient and gain self-control. Its quite a small section of scripture but Id love to encourage you to think and pray about what it might look like for each of you to grow in patience and self-control at school, at home, on your sporting teams and in other areas of life! 21.01.2022 Hey Insight youth! Matt here and Im having some technical difficulties recording audio for the videos so until that gets sorted, I will be posting text summaries of my devotions. The theme that we will be looking at today in Proverbs is discernment, which is seen loads of times throughout the book. Discernment is just another word for wise decision making and as we know from previous videos and posts from the other leaders, the book of Proverbs is part of the wisdom section ...of the Bible and as a result is stacked full of areas related to wise decision making. Some references of discernment in the book include Proverbs 14:8, 16:1-2, 19:2, and 19:21. These verses not only outline discernment but whose discernment is good and trustworthy. In chapter 14 verse 8 we read that the wise give thought to their ways, that is to say that they dont act upon impulse alone but rather think through the decisions put before them and this is something we all should strive to do. In 16:1-2 we read that mankind uses their hearts for discernment, which we know is not always the right decision as a result of sin, however from the Lord comes the proper answer meaning that true discernment comes from God. This passage also then continues to illustrate how the motives behind the decisions made will be weighed by the Lord and as a result we should ensure that the motives of our choices are in line with God, and when we sin and make the wrong choice we should turn back to God in repentance. In chapter 19 we read that we should not be hasty when it comes to discernment, but rather like before we should weigh our motives and ensure that they are in line with God, It also comes with reassurance that when we make a mistake Gods purpose will prevail and keep moving forward, and our response should be to seek forgiveness he gives. So our question for the days is, when looking at this with Scott Pettys little black book, why is using the Bible a good tool for discernment? See more

17.01.2022 Hey Insight youth! This weeks book review is a short one looking at the second half of the first chapter. Last week we looked at how the Bible is the breath of God (2 Tim 3:16) and the significance of where scripture comes from. This is a much shorter section of the chapter but it tackles a pretty complex idea in a very brief and concise way. To know God with our minds, hearts, spirits and lives, we need the precious words of the Bible This quote beautifully sets up the fi...nal section of the first chapter as Scott goes into what special revelation is and why its so significant. The term special revelation is in contrast to general revelation or natural theology, which looks something like seeing the beauty of the ocean and from that drawing a conclusion that there must be a creator. The Bible falls into the category of special revelation and we can fully appreciate this when looking back at the previous half of the chapter looking at how the Bible is the word of God. Understanding this highlights the specialness of this special revelation we have in the Bible. Special revelation is how God communicates his purpose and his character and nature This is a beautiful summary of special revelation and its intended purpose. Finally Scott finishes the chapter by setting out one more piece of groundwork. Jesus is the focus of the Bible. Without special revelation we wouldnt understand that Jesus is the centre of Gods work and the focus of his revelation. Understanding special revelation allows us to appreciate how God has revealed himself to us in the Bible through the person of Jesus. As the week continues I challenge you to pray and thank God for the gift of special revelation that is the Bible and as a result we can know Jesus. A further challenge would be to read Psalm 19 and spend some time reflecting on it and discuss with the people in your discussion groups. Hope to see you all on friday in our youth Zoom! If you do not have the meeting ID for the Zoom please private message the page and we can send you the ID for the meeting. -Matty.

14.01.2022 Hey there Insight Youth! At church we have now finished our study in the book of Colossians. 14.01.2022 Hey there Insight Youth! This Sunday at Church we are looking at Colossians 4:7-18, wrapping up our series in Colossians! Have a read of the passage and think about this question: How are all the different people in these verses partnering to spread the Gospel?

13.01.2022 Hey Insight youth and welcome back to our 5th book review segment! We started this series by looking at where the Bible comes from, and after that we spent two weeks with Rachel thinking about the reliability of the Bible. We are now up to chapter three and will be thinking about how the Bible teaches us, more specifically how it teaches us what God calls us to believe. For those following along with your copy at home this video is the first half of chapter three starting at... page 35 and wrapping up at about 40 for this week and then next week we will finish up the chapter. Scott starts the chapter by posing the question: Where do you turn when youre trying to work out the right things to do or think? This question really resonated with me and I really want to encourage you all to think hard about this question, just sit and reflect on it for a bit. I know for me personally a lot of it comes down to a gut feeling, if I feel its the right call then I will usually go for it, If Im unsure I will most likely ask a family member for their input. However even then I am sometimes left unsatisfied with the decision and the choice I have to make. Scott outlines how he has felt similar ways with the people whose opinion matters to him and I reckon most of you understand the feeling of needing to make a decision and just being unsure as to what to do. Scott then proceeds to outline four areas that people tend to listen to. 1. The first being the voice of tradition, this could look like following tradition blindly, purely for the sake of tradition. 2. The second one is the voice of logic and reason. You use the brain God gave you to figure it out yourself or you consult with a smart friend and use their logic as your reasoning for the choice you decide to make. 3. Third, Scott puts forward the voice of experience. This would include making a decision based off your experiences or those of people you trust. 4. And the final one is what feels right. I would attribute this to being almost identical to a gut feeling. These four different voices that tend to form decisions are the most commonly used by everyone. However, Scott then outlines how there are major problems with all four using specific examples that can result in unwanted outcomes. Come back next week for the final part of chapter three to find out what the best decision-making process is and why its the best! Hope to see you all on Friday at youth zoom, please PM the page if you dont have the ID for it and we will get the information to you as quickly as possible. -Matthew

06.01.2022 Todays Proverbs devotion is a little different to the videos we have had recently! It comes in the form of an article and some questions. Have a read through the article and jot down your answers to the questions below. https://fervr.net/teen-/how-to-have-great-godly-friendships 1. Consider the patterns you have with your friends; what are some patterns that are unhelpful or even ungodly? What are some patterns that are helpful? Try and be specific - it may be helpful to w...rite these things down. 2. Read the following Proverbs and highlight the things we should look for in friends (and the type of friends we should be!) Why are these things good? Go through and highlight (in a different colour!) the things we should avoid (both in the friends we look for and the way we are a friend to others). What is harmful about these things? Proverbs 13:20 Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm. Proverbs 17:17 A friend loves at all times Proverbs 18:24 One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 22:24-25 Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared. Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. 3. Why is it encouraging to know how Jesus treated his friends and others? 4. Choose one friend you would like to pray for and check in with (it may be helpful to choose someone else at Insight). Ask them if theyd like to pray with you and keep each other accountable.
