25.01.2022 What is an SSD (Solid State Drive)? how is it different to a traditional hard disk? Explained-

24.01.2022 The halcyon days of Sydney’s longest summer are apparently set to end tomorrow. It’s been glorious weather for cycling this week. Got #photobombed by a pigeon while having lunch at #jubileeparkglebe, and thoroughly enjoyed the cruise home along the #cooksrivercycleway from #marrickville today. #ridesydney #techsupport

21.01.2022 My last job this afternoon required me to undo the damage done to a clients computer by a ‘helpful’ caller from ‘Telstra’, claiming that they had detected a hacking attack, and were calling to make sure the vulnerability was secured. Unfortunately this is not an uncommon scenario! Telstra and Microsoft support personnel will NEVER call you unsolicited. Think about it- it’s hard enough getting them to help you when you know you have a problem! If you get a call like that ple...ase don’t entertain the caller for longer than it takes to hang up. If you come to your senses after you’ve given them access to your computer the best thing you can do is turn the power off and give me a call. In this case that’s what was done, I was able to use Windows System Restore to roll the registry back to a few days previous. This may have prevented the usual outcome- system lockout with a password set by the scammer used as leverage to charge a fix fee. See more

20.01.2022 Is it worth spending money upgrading your computer? For sure! If you’ve only got 4GB of RAM, an upgrade to 8GB could improve your computer’s performance when you’ve got a lot of applications open at once. In this case the upgrade from 4GB to 8GB cost $110 (not including fitting). See http://insitu.net.au/Tec/small-business-computer-memory.htm for an explanation of RAM. But easily the best way to radically improve the performance of your PC is with a SSD (For an explanation ...of what Solid State Drives are and why they are so much better see the video in one of the posts below). This 1TB Samsung Evo 860 pictured cost $390. The existing 1TB Seagate Drive was cloned onto the new drive. The difference was easy to see. The boot time dropped from upwards of 3 minutes to 15 seconds. The system became much more responsive, no more lags. True, it’s not necessarily cheap to upgrade your computers components. However, the cost of a new SSD can be halved by choosing a smaller drive. But for those that want to dramatically extend the lifespan of their workstation instead of buying new equipment every couple of years, these two upgrades can help you achieve that goal. See more

17.01.2022 Working as a mobile tech support technician in Sydney has it occasional upsides- lunch at Balmoral. As for that Mercedes Benz e-Bike with motor scooter sized wheels... no comment.

17.01.2022 I’m on a hot birdwatching streak! Tawny frogmouth last night on cup and saucer creek, then an awesome great egret this morning on the Cooks River where C&S creek comes out. Then some of the regulars thrown in for good measure. #cooksriver #sydneybirds

12.01.2022 A shout out to anyone still running Windows 7 on their computer and wondering what you should do about the messages telling you that it will no longer be supported. You don’t need to replace your computer! I can help you. Windows 10 can probably be installed on your computer, and in most cases Microsoft does not charge you for the upgrade. Please PM me if you would more information about pulling your computer into the new decade. It may cost you as little as $110.

11.01.2022 My 'SSD's Explained' video I made a few of years ago pointed out that SSD's are "much more expensive". Fact is, Solid State Drives (SSD's) have dropped in price dramatically in the last 12 months! With 120GB models available for as little as $50, this is easily the best way to breath new life back into a computer used to be fast, and isn't anymore.

09.01.2022 The Tools of the Trade How does an IT consultant and tech supporter carry everything he needs for on site tech support on a bike? (1) The desktop computer with a dying hard disk that needs replacing with... (2) a new Solid State Drive connected with SATA-USB adapter to... (3) my HP Elite X2 hybrid laptop (or is it a tablet?) which is currently transferring the disk image from...... (4) the dying hard disk that has just been removed from the desktop to the (2) new SSD (5) Everything I need for this task (and more) fits in a rack bag and a couple or weatherproof panniers. I have a feeling their weatherproofness will be tested in an hour or two... See more

02.01.2022 Took the quiet back roads to a job in Bexley today and found myself crossing Wolli Creek at the bottom of Ellerslie Rd. Beautiful spot! Old mossy sandstone walls bordering the stream in places. Lovely... until I had to walk my bike up the steps #innerwestcyclists #cyclingsydney

01.01.2022 Found a copy of the Earlwood local rag from 1953 under my house. Be transported back in time... Highlights: there was a team terminus, and you could find yourself in court for using insulting words on a public thoroughfare. #timemachine #earlwood #earlwoodhistory #innerwesthistory
