11.01.2022 When I told my father I had been offered a university place to study psychology his response was all psychologists are rip off merchants. It would’ve been nic...e to hear that he was proud of me but instead he told me he didn’t understand why I was in therapy myself. Your life has turned out ok he said. Because I’m in therapy I told him. Later that year, in our last phone conversation, he said the words you never had a finger laid on you, you lying little bitch. Which is not true and my mother, the perpetrator of years of physical violence, knew it. But it was the end of the road for us. He died 23 years later without saying another word to me. Truth is expensive, it costs us our comfort zones, a price he didn’t want to pay. The wounds we experience as vulnerable children are not hurt feelings but deep biologically damaging injury, that literally rewires the developing brain. Then there is the second wound, the one of not being believed, of being branded a liar, our suffering minimised by a society that prefers its victims to suck it up. So we are left alone with a nervous system wired to scan for danger, feeling chronically unsafe in the world, while being told to magically get over it and move on. And when we seek therapy to do just that, we’re questioned again. There is still stigma attached to this courageous act. People who have been traumatised in childhood and take themselves to therapy as adults are fighting for their lives. We are not meant to do this alone. So I have been building sanctuary for us all, taking my offerings and weaving them together into one colourful creative bundle, in one safe gathering space.
