25.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday Surf Industry in Torquay - Inspired by the Bells Beach Surf Shop Inspiration can come from unusual places ..and friends are usually involved. This story is one step towards the foundation of Rip Curl. Early surf shops in Torquay were pretty humble affairs, it was a struggle to find floorspace, business was strictly seasonal, and supplies (particularly of boards manufactured interstate) could be inconsistent, but that didn’t stop people from trying. ... The Bells Beach Surf Shop sprung into life in the summer of 1967-68 and had a relatively brief existence but one very important step was made here. It was one of a string of surf shops opened by Doug Claw Warbrick and Brian Singer (and in this case Terry Wall) in an effort to run a business that would support their surfing. Shops had already been tried at Lorne and Brighton previously but it was at the Bells Beach Surf Shop the name Rip Curl would appear for the first time. The shop was based in Mumbles Walker’s service station opposite the pub in Bell Street, Torquay. The shop carried a limited range of gear, including Torquay Surfer Supplies and surfboards from leading Victorian manufacturers like Rice, Young, Gill, Pyke and Davies. There were efforts to get supplies of the latest vee bottom surfboard designs, Claw was the local agent for Sydney based Keyo surfboards who were at the leading edge of the revolution in design changes taking place. Their boards were too popular though and Claw couldn’t secure an adequate supply, Shane Steadman stepped in and agreed to supply them with surfboards but suggested they would need their own name/logo on the boards. Claw, Brian and Simon Buttonshaw sat around brainstorming ideas, Simon had painted a board previously for Claw that had included the term Rip curl, hot dog this was abbreviated to just Rip Curl. A logo was designed by Simon, printed and given to Shane, and a brand was born. With thanks to the @AustralianNationalSurfingMuseum for this story! #ThrowbackThursday

08.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday The first surf shop in Torquaywhat does it take to be the first? There was a time when there were no surf shops in Torquay, and they did start to appear some of those early surf shops were very low key indeed. Don Loveless had a TV and radio repair shop in Gilbert Street. ... He had some wax and a few boards in his showroom in the early 1960s, then he had an idea. Surfing at that time was a pretty stripped down experience. Surfers just needed: a board; some wax; and a pair of shorts. Surfing in Victoria means dealing with weather extremes and, in Torquay, the water and weather can be cold. Don figured surfers needed to keep warm so he and his wife, Fay, started making custom surfwear. Shorts and parkas (jackets) could be produced in club colours, or to your own design. The gear was available locally and via a number of agents in Melbourne and interstate. In the following decade, surfing would evolve and grow Torquay Surfer Supplies providing an indication of what was to come. broad market appeal. At that point Torquay had only a small permanent population and seasonal visitation, and surfing was yet to establish its broad market appeal. In the following decade surfing would evolve and grow Torquay Surfer Supplies providing an indication of what was to come. With thanks to the Australian National Surfing Museum for this story!
