19.01.2022 Weekly Summary for our 5th Workshop for Term 4, 2018 at Caddies Jigsaw OOSH: Topic: ‘Dealing with disagreements and conflict: turning ‘you’ statements into ‘I ‘ statements’. Aim: for the children to learn and put into practise the best ways to deal with conflict and disagreements. For each child to learn what ‘I statements’ are and how to use them for conflict resolution. ... Games and activities * Craft: Sleep door knob hanger (from last week’s topic) * Discussion and brainstorming about conflict resolution and arguments. * Introducing the 5 conflict resolution styles: presented using animal characters. * Discussion and brainstorming of if winning an argument is worth it in the end or is it better to maintain the relationship with a person than to win. * Introducing ‘I statements’ instead of playing the blame game. * How to respond when someone is angry or upset with you through active listening. What active listening is and why it’s important. * Learning about having a time out when an argument gets too heated so that each person can calm down first. * Each child had a turn to act out conflict scenarios where they put the blame and yelled at the other person then tried the alternate way where they responded instead with ‘I’ messages and active listening to see which style was better at improving the situation. What you can do at home to support your child in this: Try to role model ‘I statements’ and active listening within your household. If you see your child getting frustrated remind them that calling a time out to calm down is ok. If your child yells and screams in a conflict remind them to use ‘I statements’ instead. Next week’s topic: ‘Dealing with social media and online bullying’ News/updates: * Don’t forget that this term we are running two sessions that are ‘families choice’. You can let us know what topic to do with mental health you would like us to run? To let us know contact us on FB or email us: [email protected] * Follow us on FB to check out our weekly summaries. * We run one on one Skype sessions at a time that suits you all from the comfort of your own home! Interested? Simply get in contact to let us know!

12.01.2022 ‘Life is not safe, and so our task is not to promise our kids there will be no turbulence. It’s to assure them that when the turbulence comes, we will all hold hands and get through it together. We do not promise them a heartache-free life, but we do assure them that the slings and arrows won’t kill them in fact, they will make them kinder, wiser, more resilient.’ Great article check it out

Aim: for the children to learn about how important it is for their minds and bodies to get adequate sleep. For them to learn how much sleep they require, why they need proper sleep to think creatively, feel calm and to be able to concentrate and focus, what bad sleep patterns do to our bodies and minds and ways to prepar...e yourself and your environment for a good nights sleep. Games and activities * Sleep crossword * Sleep maze- can you help the character find the fastest way to a good nights sleep? * What time did you go to bed last night and did you have a good nights sleep group discussion? Why/why not? * Who has ever stayed up past midnight and how did you feel the next day? We will hand these out next week. What you can do at home to support your child in this: Try to talk to your child about their sleep, check that they are comfortable in the environment that they sleep in. Eg. Is their pillow comfortable, is the light too bright, do they need a night light? Discuss with them what their sleep routine is to make sure they have one that works for them. Think about how many hours of sleep they are getting, is it enough? At least 11 hours is optimal for their age.
