01.01.2022 Bicycles are so cool! Not only are they fun (see picture of Mary on her speed machine), but also they are #science machines which convert energy: energy from what you eat into kinetic energy (or movement). So, you eat a sandwich, then jump on the bike and ride somewhere. #science The amazing thing about bicycles is they are super-efficient at converting energy from your body into kinetic energy around 90% efficiency! A car only has between 20-35% efficiency. This means only... about one-quarter of every litre of petrol that goes into a car is used to move the car forward. Plus when you’re on a bike, you don’t need to worry about parking or polluting the planet or paying for a gym membership. Win win win! So get on ya bike today, keep fit, and you’ll realise that there’s #STEMEverywhere. The #STEMEverywhere campaign by Australia's Chief Scientist is about highlighting everyday people doing everyday activities, and showing you how they relate to #STEM. Feel free to join the campaign by using the hashtag #STEMEverywhere or commenting below with an image or activity you think relates to STEM. If you’ve been enjoying this #STEMEverywhere series and are feeling inspired to take some more STEM activities, visit the STARportal for lots of ideas for home and school STEM fun.
