20.01.2022 Can you help us find where western pygmy possums live in the Murraylands? We present an opportunity to be involved in a Citizen Science Project, aiming to find ...out more about a small marsupial, the Western Pygmy Possum, in eastern South Australia. Western Pygmy Possums have been known to occur widely from the coast to north of the Murray River. Their habitat encompasses a variety of woodlands with an herb and shrub understory where they rely on nectar and pollen. But there is still a lot we dont know about these little creatures, including exactly where in the Murraylands they occur today and what the future holds for them. This Project involves installing the nest boxes in bushland in the Mid-Murray region on private properties and conservation reserves. Follow-up visits to survey the nestboxes for pygmy possums will be part of the project by the landholders themselves or volunteers to see if they are being used by the Western Pygmy Possums. At a later stage, the SA Museum may collect a small ear clip for genetic analysis. The samples collected will be analysed at the South Australian Museum to survey genetic diversity and population structure across the range of the possum. Camera traps will also be set up at some sites to monitor pygmy possum activity. If you would like to take part in this project and install a nest box on your property, please contact Karen Bishop from Riverland West Landcare to register your interest Ph 0429 049 309. For more information on the project contact Aimee Linke from Mid Murray Landcare SA Ph 0427 590 344.
