09.01.2022 The hard work that goes into planting trees. Our planting partner, Brettacorp, has been working very very hard to prepare the land for tree planting. You may wonder why all the grass has been cut? This species of grass is called Guinea Grass. It is an introduced #weed, brought to #Australia from #Africa, for cattle feed. Surprise, surprise the grass escaped into the wild and took over natural spaces. Guinea grass grows to a height of about 3 meters and forms very ver...y dense thickets, through which no sunlight can penetrate and therefore no tree can grow. So before we can even plant a tree, we have to do a lot of site preparation. The Guinea grass has been slashed. Next the land will be #Ripped (long lines will be torn through the soil to make tree planting easier). We slash and rip to ensure the baby trees have the absolute best chance of survival. Without this #Action there is no chance the trees will grow. All this hard work, saving the world, in the hot tropical sun, takes a lot of time, energy and money. That's where you come in. One of the most difficult part of planting trees is preparing the site Depending on the kind of tree we are planting and the size of the roots, holes can be anywhere up to a meter deep! A deep hole makes rooting easier. ... Because we are planting trees in the worst soil you can imagine digging in. Its hard, compacted, full of rocks and just really, really not fun to dig in. That is why we use a machine called an Auger. An Auger is basically a giant drill. It drills holes into the ground and saves us having to try and dig. One worker using an Auger can easily dig 250 holes in one day.
