20.01.2022 What makes a good encounter, and what makes the encounter bad? I have run some bad encounters in my time, real shockers. Combats that just dragged on for ages or were too deadly. NPC's that were flat and boring, and adventure locations that just felt dull, lacking inspiration. Later, I realised that most of the encounters I'd run and considered failures were lacking one thing 'Drama'. They lacked tension.

17.01.2022 I wanted to share something more personal today. This is a photo of me (on the right) back in 2014 running one of my first ever D&D games at my local game store around the release of #5thedition. It wasn't the best game and I was new to DM'ing but it was our game and that's what made it special. . I didn't know many people that were into D&D let alone anyone that was running a game. So, if I wanted to play I needed to run the game, and I have been ever since. Some would call ...me a forever DM but honestly, I prefer to run the game for others. . It stems from the age old proverb of "There is more joy in giving than there is in receiving". As a DM we are always giving to our players wither it be our time, our labour, or our dice and miniatures. We give so they can play. . So I hope that this might inspire you, if you've been thinking about running a game for your friends, take that leap and give them the greatest gift of all, your time and imagination. See more
16.01.2022 I was rewatching The Grey (2011) when I had the idea for this encounter. Being tracked by a pack of wolves through a winter wilderness seems like a fairly spooky concept and I thought it'd make for a good encounter. This encounter features the winter wolf and has a pack of them attempt to ambush the party during a blizzard with reduced visiblity. 13.01.2022 I started writing drop-in encounters for my own games a few years ago. This came from a place of feeling inadequately prepared for most of my games. At some stage, I came to terms with the fact that this feeling never goes away and that we can only fight this feeling with better DM tools. So I started writing my drop-in encounters into digestible content for other DM's to use :) If you like it, I've got plenty more coming soon.
