21.01.2022 Heres some more information about the 2 community development courses presently running at the Institute of Community Development. Introductory course: 4 & 7 March - 2 day course... This would suit people who have not studied Community Development before or have studied it but want to revisit core principles. Rather than being a descriptive how-to guide, it will deal with, community development as a job and community development as our way of being. Core Community Development principles of ecology, social justice human rights, valuing the local, and valuing process will be explored. Participants will apply these to their particular domains, ranging from arts, to health, welfare, international development and grass roots citizenship. Participants will engage with political-economy, social movements, and globalisation. Advanced course: 5 & 8 April - 2 day course Participants will have completed the foundations course and/or be those who want to go deeper into the dilemmas and contradictions of Community Development. Many participants have been on a journey for some time to understand and address social justice and sustainability. The aim is to validate this journey and depart with a renewed commitment about continuing on they community development path. Starting from the basis of a shared knowledge of key Community Development principles, participants will investigate ontologies or ways of being beyond individualism, including relationalality, Indigenous worldviews, eco-psychology, post-modernism, and feminism. A process will be designed to translate between theory and day-to-day practice.

14.01.2022 People Power Participation book OUT NOW! People, Power, Participation: living community development A memoir and reflections on community development BY MARY LANE... This book contributes to a history of community development in Australia and to debates about its future as a strategy for social change. The authors lived experience, told through stories of activism, practice and teaching from the 1960s on, is a means for identifying changes in community development theories/practices and factors influencing those changes. Highlighted are positive outcomes for disadvantaged people as well as tensions and contradictions, notably those arising from government patronage. The author calls for re-affirmation of community development as a significant means for tackling social problems. Increased sponsorship by non-government organisations committed to social justice and ecological sustainability is prioritised, as is deconstruction of an understanding of community development as a paid occupation only. Rather, it is seen as a way of doing things that emphasises connection, participatory democracy and common good, a way which can inform all aspects of human activity. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Mary Lane is an honorary senior lecturer in the Faculty of Education and Social Work, The University of Sydney. In 2012 the University awarded her an Honorary Doctorate of Letters in Social Work. Her involvement in community activism began in the 1960s and from 1974-1982 she was employed as a community development worker in western Sydney. In 1983, she joined the staff of the Social Work Department at The University of Sydney where the primary focus of her work has been community work and peace and conflict studies. A keen interest in the development of practice theory has entailed extensive documentation and analysis of community practice. Her work has been widely published, nationally and internationally, in academic journals, books and practice booklets, and includes the production of audio-visual material. Mary is married, is a mother and grandmother BUY NOW Available in hard copy and Ebook at http://cd.borderlands.org.au/

12.01.2022 COMING UP: Short Course: Community Development (working with Jacques Boulet in association with oases Graduate School) 4 Day Course 2013... Aug 10 Saturday Oct 12 Saturday Nov 10 Sunday Nov 11 Monday Community Development has variously been condemned to oblivion as nave romanticism or reduced to an ill-understood panacea, especially for the disadvantaged and then, in turn, criticised as a cheap pseudo-solution for problems which have their roots far beyond the local community. This short course offers a reflective and constructive space where we can re-construct community in its ontological, epistemological and praxis dimensions. We explore concepts, strategies and practices associated with Community Development (with Strategies and practices understood here as a means of mediating between theoretical / empirical; / ideological aspects of community and the practical / technical / methodical aspects of community intervention, whether referred to as community development, organisation, building, or strengthening etc). Basing our exploration of community Development in the dialectical theory-practice (or reflection-action) relationship which gives it real meaning, we move beyond the words and make the actors explicit. We pay careful consideration to the ideological and theoretical premises witch ex/implicitly underwrite our actions. Cost: $650 concession / $850 full Location: Oases Graduate School, Hawthorn Enrollments: 03 9819 3502 [email protected]
