25.01.2022 NRP: 20 years on and still applies 'Systematic phonics instruction is designed to increase accuracy in decoding and word recognition skills, which in turn facilitate comprehension. However, it is again important to note that fluent and automatic application of phonics skills to text is another critical skill that must be taught and learned to maximize oral reading and reading comprehension. This issue again underscores the need for teachers to understand that while phonics ...skills are necessary in order to learn to read, they are not sufficient in their own right. Phonics skills must be integrated with the development of phonemic awareness, fluency, and text reading comprehension skills'. Excerpted from: National Reading Panel. (April, 2000). 13.01.2022 MSL Associate course Connects the Science of Reading to Educational Practice. The Science of Reading (SoR) is a body of research spanning from the fields of psychology, education, linguistics, cognitive science, and cognitive neuroscience on reading. This SoR research has been conducted for decades (@40 years) all around the world. The research has important implications for teachers and reading specialists in helping all children to succeed.... The science of reading is not only about phonics. It is about all of the types of knowledge that underlies skilled reading and how they are learned. Courses that include the Science of Reading research addresses important questions such as (non-exhaustive): How does reading work from a neurological perspective? What are the important component skills and knowledge and how do they work together? How is spoken language related to reading acquisition? How does reading relate to spelling and writing? How do children learn to read based on the SoR research? How does their behavior change over time? What is the impact of experience on children’s progress? This includes experience in the classroom: instruction and other learning activities; and experience in the home and community: before children start school, and after Which experiences are most important at different points in development? What factors promote or interfere with children’s progress? Why do some children struggle with reading? How can they be helped? What are the brain pathways and operations that support reading? How can understanding the brain bases of language and literacy be used to improve teaching and assist all children’s learning? The MSL Associate course bridges the research behind what we do and aims to train teachers in WHAT to teach and importantly HOW to teach it. It is very important to also have a minimum of 12 months supervision included to ensure optimum results are achieved in the delivery of MSL/SL. As well as ongoing networking with IMSLE and the ADA and associated PL. http://www.multisensoryeducation.net.au/our-courses

10.01.2022 Happy #wordsforwednesday everyone! All educators need to make sure they understand the English language and its components in order for them to understand how to teach reading and writing to students across the grade levels. #SOR #readingscience #structuredliteracy #teachers
09.01.2022 Yes! All children deserve evidence based structured and systemic/systematic literacy instruction when learning to read. For too long teachers have not had access to best reading research to educational practice and have been left in the dark and sadly as a result had to find their own way. Many teachers that take up IMSLE training offer their heartbreaking stories on not being well equipped to teach reading/literacy. Now is the time to embrace the science/research and training that supports best practice.

06.01.2022 This has resurfaced of late and the research outcome remains the same: 'PA(Phonemic awareness) instruction was more effective when it was taught with letters than without letters'. 04.01.2022 Orthographic mapping (OM) involves the formation of letter-sound connections to bond the spellings, pronunciations, and meanings of specific words in memory. It explains how children learn to read words by sight, to spell words from memory, and to acquire vocabulary words from print. Ehri, 2014
04.01.2022 'Phonics Instruction' What Is the Difference Between Implicit and Explicit Phonics Instruction? Explicit vs Implicit 'There's more than one way to skin a cat' is an idiom (or saying) that means there are multiple ways to accomplish something. In most cases, it is absolutely true; there is usually more than one solution to a problem and different ways to approach most tasks. When talking about teaching reading, there are several approaches that have been resea...Continue reading
