23.01.2022 The Lachlan Macquarie Award for Heritage Architecture - Joint Winner - 2020 National Architecture Awards Hollow Tree House | Core Collective Architects | TAS | Traditional Land Owners: people of lutruwita | Adam Gibson Congratulations ... Jury citation: A significant commitment to Tasmania’s heritage has been made with the restoration of Hollow Tree House and its stables. The informed and artful peeling back of building layers reveals the original fabric, constructed at various times in the house’s history. This award honours the shared vision of an inspired client and an adept architect. They have revealed the early settler spirit of making do in the isolation of the Central Highlands, while enacting the Burra Charter principle of doing as much as necessary but as little as possible1 in preparing the homestead for the future. While the architects of the new Hollow Tree House have been respectful of its past and maintained the character of the homestead through the upheaval of the construction period, their inventive and fine insertions also propose an optimistic future. Core Collective Architects’ contemporary aesthetic is nuanced and captivating against the original austerity of the Colonial Georgian homestead, resulting in an enchanting contemporary house. #NatAwards20 #australianarchitecture #architecture #architectureawards

22.01.2022 Commendation for Urban Design - 2020 National Architecture Awards Bridge of Remembrance | Denton Corker Marshall | TAS | Traditional Land Owners: muwinina, part of the palawa people | John Gollings Congratulations ... Jury citation: Denton Corker Marshall’s Bridge of Remembrance has seamlessly reconnected two of Hobart’s most significant public spaces: the Cenotaph and the Soldiers Memorial Avenue on the Queens Domain. An elegant, twisting plane, the 200-metre-long bridge spans a broad highway at a key threshold to the city, providing a distinctive entry portal. While a dramatic gesture from various vantage points, the design is also nuanced, respecting the cultural heritage and environmental values of the site. This approach enables people to engage with this highly considered and restrained work in multiple ways. The experience of pedestrians crossing the bridge is carefully curated; a pair of folding aluminium planes flanks the axis, deliberately opening up and obscuring views along the journey. The high west wings dramatically frame the vista to the Cenotaph then fold back mid-span, revealing broader views of the Domain while screening the traffic below. The drama of these enfolding silver planes is heightened at night, when the bridge is illuminated. Denton Corker Marshall is to be commended on this sophisticated and uplifting resolution of a complex urban condition. #NatAwards20 #australianarchitecture #architecture #architectureawards

19.01.2022 At our Chapter Council meeting at the start of February we farewelled Richard Crawford. Richard has been part of the Tasmanian Chapter Council since the early 1990s and was the Tasmanian Chapter President between 2009 2011. His contribution to the Chapter has been enormous - Richard has been a level-headed advocate for architecture and has represented the Chapter as the Chair of the Board of Architects for many years. Richard’s wisdom and sage insight on Chapter Council will be missed, but we look forward to continuing to benefit from his experience in the years to come. Nina Hamilton
19.01.2022 Commendation for Public Architecture - 2020 National Architecture Awards Parks Victoria Albert Park Office and Depot | Harrison and White with Archier | VIC | Traditional Land Owners: Wurundjeri-willam people of the Kulin Nation | Peter Bennetts Congratulations ... Jury citation: This project has transformed a utilitarian parks depot into an engaging public building. Located in Melbourne’s Albert Park, the building is organized around a central courtyard, providing a welcoming orientation space for park visitors while accommodating depot functions behind. Airy and light-filled office spaces on the level above enjoy a green outlook from every window. A stacked program has enabled a minimal-footprint building that delivers high amenity and low impact. The exposed concrete and timber structure is lean, yet carefully composed to maximum effect, with upturned perimeter beams doubling as window seats internally and planters on the outside face. With the adept integration of greenery to shade, cool and screen spaces, structures and windows, the exterior is further animated and effortlessly settles the building into its parkland setting. #NatAwards20 #australianarchitecture #architecture #architectureawards

Yvette has been involved with the Tasmanian Chapter in a number of roles since the early 2000s and has been a stead-fast and passionate advocate for the value of architecture. She has championed the input of the EmAGN demographic along with issues relating to gender equity in the profession. Yvette’s knowledge and considered approach will be missed on Chapter Council..., however we look forward to continuing to tap into her insight through her involvement with the Findlay Project. 06.01.2022 Commendation for Small Project Architecture - 2020 National Architecture Awards Protagonist | Cumulus Studio | VIC |Traditional Land Owners: Boon Wurrung and Woiwurrung peoples of the Kulin Nation | Sean Fennessy Congratulations ... Jury citation: Protagonist, a small cafe pavilion by Cumulus Studio, is a clever solution to a Rubik’s Cube of a problem, including an inability to penetrate the ground plane and the need to declutter the forecourt of the Arts Centre Melbourne. The result an inventive, whimsical and carefully detailed concept appears effortless. A drapery of operable polycarbonate chain mesh provides a veil for the compact, pop-up cafe; although inspired, it was not easy to execute. The contextual theatrical references, coupled with a stripping back of the superfluous, results in a highly functional yet delightful set piece, with both industrial and interior design flair. The kinetic quality of the light playing on the elegant materials provides a new gem for Melbourne. Long may it be available for that next cafe latte. #australianarchitecture #architecture #architectureawards
