22.01.2022 #StingerCollection - Bluebottle (Physalia utriculus) Description: Bluebottles have a conspicuous elongate blue float and a long blue tenta...cle. In Physalia utriculus the float rarely exceeds 10 cm with the tentacle less than 3 metres. The bluebottle is very similar to the large Pacific Man-of-War which has floats to 15 cm in length and multiple fishing tentacles which can extend to 10 metres in large animals. The Bluebottle is Australia’s most common stinger, and is found at reef locations around Cairns during the summer months. Biology: These complex floating colonies consist of four different types of polyps. The float that lies horizontally on the sea surface is a single individual that supports the polyps that reproduce, the polyps that digest the food, and the polyps that capture the prey. The single main fishing tentacle that hangs beneath the colony has a frilled and beaded appearance. Each bead consists of hundreds of nematocysts (stinging capsules). Distribution: Fleets of bluebottles are often carried by warm currents to more temperate waters. In southern Western Australia they are blown onshore and can be seen on beaches in autumn and winter, less often in summer. They are frequently seen on Perth beaches. Diet: Bluebottles feed mostly on larval fish and small crustaceans such as copepods and amphipods. Stings: Physalia utriculus stings are mild, producing localised pain and swelling. Symptoms: Immediate intense local pain which can last for an hour or more. The skin may be marked with a raised red line or small bead-like weals. Prevention: Avoid swimming when bluebottles have been washed onto the beach as they are likely to still be in the ocean. The tentacles frequently break off in rough water and can sting. Do not touch dead animals as the venom remains active, and nematocysts can still fire long after the animals are dead and dried. Wear protective clothing such as: Gloves, full wetsuit, rash guards & leggings or stinger suit. First Aid: * Do not treat with vinegar. * Remove any tentacles from the skin using tweezers or a gloved hand. * If possible soak for 20 minutes in hot water (42C). * Apply cold packs, and possibly a pain relieving cream, to the affected area for pain relief. This may need to be repeated for some weeks if the itchiness persists. #StingerSeason #FNQ #Cairns #Jellyfish #Irukandji #BoxJellyfish #Bluebottle #Marine #Surfing #ScubaDiving #Swimming #Diving #Queensland #stinger

19.01.2022 ***Captain Missing*** Captain Bob was my Captain when I was aboard the Sea Shepherd boat M/V Farley Mowat. He is an incredibly skilled Captain, if he made it to an island or on a life raft he will still be alive. Please can anyone with any connections to the boating community in Puerto Rico, Carriacou or the Caribbean help me. .... Date 24th March 2020 AIS: Last Known PX Tyrell Bay, Carriacou 1 POB . Good Evening all Yacht Crew, We are currently undergoing a search for a very well established captain from our yachting community, Robert/Bob Peel. We had last established comms with Bob on 14th March, and that his planned voyage was to head north to San Juan, Puerto Rico, he was at anchor in Tyrell Bay Carriacou. After 10 days of no comms we started to get concerned, and we contacted with the Cruiser community down there, and someone eye-witnessed his yacht Kalayaan Departing the bay and headed north, this was 18th or 19th March. This evening we have found out that his EPIRB has been set off first on the 19th March and then the Final and last signal received was 24th March, the information I received from Trinidad and Tobago SAR. We have contacted MRCC Falmouth, UK, USCG, San Juan PR, MRCC Martinique, SAR in Grenada and everyone seems to be bouncing around who’s the problem this is. We are now reaching out to the yachting community, for people still south in the Caribbean or contacts you may have down there to help aid in the search for Bob, watchkeepers in the vicinity, please keep an extra vigilant lookout for anything that may help us work out where Bob is. Bob is a strong, stubborn Scotsman, he is a survivor and won’t give up if he is in that life raft. Pictured is Bobs Boat, Kalayaan, the UK registered Sun Odyssey 54DS, Blue Hull. 12.01.2022 Vegan-friendly cosmetics brand Lush Cosmetics North America is launching the Shark Attack campaign to save sharks from slaughter on #WorldOceansDay (June 8...). Starting today, LUSH will re-launch its popular vegan Shark Fin Soap online and donate 100% of the $5.95 sales price to Sharkwater, an organization created to continue the work of late ocean conservationist and filmmaker Rob Stewart. With every purchase of the soap bar, LUSH will include a sticker that displays messages such as Beware: Shark Killers that customers can use to demark a place where a shark attack has occurredsuch as restaurants selling shark fin soup and beauty products that use squalene, an ingredient commonly derived from shark livers. Additionally, 250 LUSH stores across North America will raise awareness of the devastation sharksan estimated 100 million of which are killed annuallyface due to human activity. The company created the campaign to emphasize the importance of sharks to the ocean ecosystem and calls for a ban on the trade of shark fins across the United States (where only 13 states have banned the practice) and Canada.
