22.01.2022 Part 3 of Finding Symmetry in Asymmetry By Joanne Maskrey B. Phty Physiotherapist Why do we have one side different to the other? Just as we have a dominant hand, we also have foot/leg dominance. A preference to using one side of the body for a task over the other is called lateral dominance, or laterality. The reasons we all have laterality is not fully understood. However, it is known that the right side of the body is controlled by the left side of the brain, and the... left hemisphere of the brain is dominant over the right hemisphere in around 90% of people. As the dominant leg (usually the right leg) is preferentially used for the fine and precise movements, the non-dominant leg is used to stabilise the body, over time the body becomes better coordinated at standing on the non-dominant leg, giving it strength to be the strong supporting leg needed as the dominant leg extends into the beautiful developpe devant. With the knowledge that we all have asymmetries that are innately developed, it is tempting to shift our focus to train the good side, and leave the other side alone/unloved. However, before you decide to never do a fouette turn to that other side ever again, there are a few points to consider. As researchers delve deeper into studying the asymmetries in the sporting population, they often find the difference in muscle strength and overall skill between the two sides of the body to be less profound in the professional athlete compared to the amateur athlete. Asymmetries in strength has been shown to negatively impact sport specific skills. A study into Australian Rules Footballers showed that the group of players that could kick the ball accurately has less difference in strength between their two sides. Conversely, the less accurate kickers of the ball, had significantly greater differences in their strength between two sides. Similar results were found in cyclists and sprinters where faster/superior performances existed in athletes who demonstrated a more symmetrical body conditioning. What we can draw from these conclusions is that the more symmetrical we can be in our muscle strength and skills, the more likely we are to perform better.

19.01.2022 Thank you to all our wonderful clients for being patient during the past couple of months as we navigated through the urgent care criteria. We are grateful to all the support you have given us during this time. So what does this next stage look like for InSync? According to the DHHS we can see clients face to face for the following reasons: - to prevent a decrease in day to day function - for people whose care was delayed by stage 4 restrictions... - for pre and post operative care - for assessment and diagnostic purposes We know that these urgent care restrictions have been limiting, so for those of you who have been struggling, we urge you to contact InSync so that we can help you get back on track. If you have any questions about the new stage, please contact us on 9813 2188, we would love to hear from you. #insyncphysio #insyncpilates #insyncphysiopilates #camberwell #camberwellphysio #camberwellpilates #physiotherapy #exerciseismedicine #melbournephysio #melbourneballetteachers #cecchettiballet #danceinjuryprevention #injuryprevention #hawthorn #melbourne

17.01.2022 Ankle Sprains - Preventing a one time injury from becoming chronic (Part 5: Components of rehab - Proprioception) Proprioception is described as the brains awareness to the position of a joint. If you close your eyes, proprioception is how your body is able to tell whether your ankle is flexed or pointed and sickled or fished. Following a sprain, the receptors which tell the brain the position of the joint can be disrupted. The brain cannot save an ankle that is about to rol...l if it doesn’t know the position the ankle is. Wobble boards are used to improve proprioception and are used once balance and pain are at a manageable level. This video shows a young dancer working on her ankle proprioception, working through plantarflexion and dorsiflexion as well as circles in both directions. #insyncpilates #insyncphysio #physiotherapy #camberwell #camberwellphysio #pilates #movementismedicine #physiotherapymelbourne #injuryprevention #dancemedicine #dancetraining #balletteacherworkshop #sportsphysiotherapy #anklerehab #rehab #strengthandconditioning

16.01.2022 How long should your runners last? No matter whether you wear your runners to work, walk or run in them, all shoes have a lifespan before the shoe is no longer supporting you and actually makes you more at risk to injury! The average lifespan is 500-800km which includes any time that you take a step in them. For those who calculate how far they walk/run this should make it easy for you to decide when to replace your shoes but for those who don’t calculate distance there are... a few telltale signs for when you should replace your shoes. The tread on the sole has worn down flat The shoe fits looser than it did previously (due to the shoe materials getting stretched and breaking down) There are holes in the upper of the shoe The sole has worn assymetrically So for those of you wearing runners that are well past their expiration date, it is time to move on! #insyncphysio #insyncpilates #insyncphysiopilates #camberwell #camberwellphysio #camberwellpilates #physiotherapy #exerciseismedicine #exercisemotivation #melbournephysio #melbourneballetteachers #cecchettiballet #danceinjuryprevention #injuryprevention #hawthorn #melbourne #runners #runnersofinstagram See more

10.01.2022 Core series: Single leg extensions Like our last exercise, this one is also working on core endurance however we are extending our leg which increases the lever arm of the exercise. What this does is it challenges the core muscles to switch on with an increased torque force through the pelvis. To translate this into a real world scenario would be when you reach for things further away from your body, grabbing shopping baskets from out of your car, anything where you are reach...ing far way from your body. Start in a neutral spine position, engage your pelvic floor and lift one leg to 90/90. Lift your second leg to 90/90 and ensure that you try and flatten your stomach when you lift this leg. Start in a 90/90 position and extend one leg out to 45 degrees then bring it back in. Complete 5 extensions on each side. This extension will create more tension in your core so it is really important to make sure that your abdominal area stays flat and it doesn't puff up as you near the end of the exercise. A really good way to check is to have one hand on your abdominal area and you can feel if there is any movement when you extend the leg. #insyncphysio #insyncpilates #insyncphysiopilates #camberwell #camberwellphysio #camberwellpilates #physiotherapy #exerciseismedicine #exercisemotivation #melbournephysio #melbourneballetteachers #cecchettiballet #danceinjuryprevention #injuryprevention #hawthorn #melbourne #pilates #corework

06.01.2022 Core series: Single leg taps Now that we have worked on our deep core to switch on the muscles, this exercise is aimed at improving it’s endurance as it has to stay switched on whilst your legs are off the ground. Endurance is really important now that we are working from home as it will help support your back in a good position. This will help to reduce any aches and pains that may accumulate over the course of the day. **Do not complete if your pelvic floor is compromised...** When completing this exercise it is really important that you engage through your pelvic floor before lifting your first leg. This ensures that the appropriate muscles will work during the exercise. Start in a 90/90 position and lower one leg to lightly tap the floor then bring it back up to 90/90. Alternately tap your feet 5 times on each side. Make sure that your stomach stays flat and that your pelvic floor is lifted throughout the entire set. #insyncphysio #insyncpilates #insyncphysiopilates #camberwell #camberwellphysio #camberwellpilates #physiotherapy #exerciseismedicine #exercisemotivation #melbournephysio #melbourneballetteachers #cecchettiballet #danceinjuryprevention #injuryprevention #hawthorn #melbourne #pilates #corework

06.01.2022 Core Series: Single Leg Lifts Deep core strength does not mean how many sit ups you can do or how long you can hold a plank, it is your ability to maintain a good pelvic floor/transverse abdominus contraction whilst completing other activities. Technically, this means that your deep core muscles should be active during most of your day. So what are the benefits of having good deep core strength? You can improve your posture, reduce back pain, improve your balance and impro...ve the quality of your body’s movements as all movements will be supported from a strong base. **Do not complete if your pelvic floor is compromised** When completing this exercise it is really important that you engage through your pelvic floor before lifting your first leg. This ensures that the appropriate muscles will work during the exercise. Start in a neutral spine position, engage your pelvic floor and lift one leg to 90/90. Lift your second leg to 90/90 and ensure that you try and flatten your stomach when you lift this leg. Lower the first leg, then lower the second leg. Complete 10 reps, 5 with one leg leading and 5 with the other leg leading.

03.01.2022 Part 3 of our Standing Series for balance and control Forward and Back Taps Finishing of the series with a challenging exercise, this exercise is not only going to challenge your hip strength but your knee strength as well. For people that currently experience knee pain, this one might be a bit too tricky or painful so please do not continue with the exercise if it causes pain.
