23.01.2022 Did you know the Ballarat Foundation operate the TAC L2P Program, a driver mentor program here in Ballarat. The program is a state wide program managed by the Department of Transport that matches young learner drivers with a supervising driver mentor. What is wonderful about the program is that it supports young people who have limited or no access to a supervising driver. The purpose is to enable the learner driver to meet the required 120 hours of driving practise prio...r to gaining their Probationary licence. Recently the Ballarat Foundation has been able to purchase another car which means that they now have 6 cars in use for driving sessions which so far has enabled 5 learners pass their test while restrictions were eased. The Ballarat Foundation are currently in need of more mentor drivers and you can easily apply by following this link https://ballaratfoundation.org/community-impa/programs/l2p/ This program not only assists youth in gaining their licence but also helps with them gain employment and increases their social engagement. 14.01.2022 Have you heard about the reverse advent calendar Ballarat? The idea behind the reverse advent calendar is that each day you add one item to the box during the lead up to Christmas and on the 18th of December the boxes are delivered to York St Church. The boxes are then distributed to Ballarat families dealing with food insecurity. Those people within our community who were struggling with food insecurity prior to Covid-19 are now 43% more likely to now be going a whole day ...each week without eating. Last year the organisers behind Ballarat Reverse Advent Calendar campaign were blown away by the response from the community who filled over 1500 boxes and this year they are hoping to fill 2000. 08.01.2022 Meet your neighbour! In our latest edition of the Lucas Chronicle we met Lakshmi Singam who moved to Australia from India. 'My husband Raja and I decided to come here to make a better life, and our two boys Aatish and Advaith were born here. It was encouraging to see the number of opportunities available in Australia. Also it is a multicultural society with a growing economy. There is a richer and more diverse culture as well as a more skilled workforce.... Moving from India was a big change for me. I fell in love with Melbourne from day one. It is a rich city with great weather and shops full of goodness. On my first day I went shopping. I walked into a shop and was greeted by a smiling shop assistant. She asked ‘How ya’ going’ in Australian slang. I felt like I belonged Initially it was hard to get work in my profession. (I had a degree in Accounting and Raja is a software engineer). The boys manage well living with the mix of cultures. My husband and I want them to know the best of both cultures. We like to include them in all Indian events and festivals, we try to teach scientific cultural values behind celebrating festivals. We wear traditional dress for these events as well as for special occasions. We often visit our parents and immediate family in India. We try to maintain close connections to our families in India through regular phone calls. We like life here in Lucas because we have friendly neighbours and we love all the walking tracks.' These spaces significantly improve the ecological and habitat functions of the drainage corridors that already exist. The main linear open space provides a habitat link between Winter Swamp (in the north-east) and the Ballarat-Skipton Rail Trail (in the south west) and forms part of the Woady Yaloak and Leigh River catchments. By using indigenous and native pl...ant species and rockwork the existing drainage lines are being enhanced to become areas of habitat significantly improving biodiversity and natural values in Lucas.
