24.01.2022 ? With Suzanne Cory just down the road, studying at a Selective Entry school is a real possibility for the residents of Point Cook, but how do you get in? About 3000 applicants try for the Selective Entry Exam held in mid-June at Year 8, to start at a Selective school in Year 9. These exams will test skills and knowledge way above a year 8 level, and it would be completed in an extremely limited time. The exam would r...Continue reading

21.01.2022 Dear Parents and Students, As you are aware, we face an unprecedented event in our nation’s recent history. The safety of our staff and students is important, but more crucially, it is our responsibility as a community to be vigilante and proactive to slow the spread of this pandemic. Although not under strict rules from the government, I have opted to transition our classes to an online learning platform starting from next week (Week of 23/4/20). This will run for one week,... and there will be no classes during the school holidays. This week, I will be setting up the systems for online LIVE classes. I will be using the program Zoom (there is an option to download the app, but you do not have to as there are browser versions). I will send work through via the Google Folders beforehand and will be setting up Google Calendar invites for your classes at the usual time you normally have them with the link to the online Zoom class. This will be sent to the email address we have on file. This will be a first for us as well, so I thank you for your patience and understanding as we set up the systems to make this work. We will reassess the situation towards the end of the holidays and may continue to use online delivery in Term 2.

20.01.2022 Would you like to know how to get your child scoring in the top 11% of the Selective Entry Exam? You’ve tried a ‘big-name’ tutoring centre. You find the classes are too big, and your child doesn’t get the personalised feedback. You’ve tried a private tutor. But they don’t have the same kind of teaching expertise. (I know this because tutors come to me all the time looking for work, and they’ve not even read a book on pedagogy before!)... As a result, you don’t get the impact on your child’s learning that you want. They don’t retain what was taught. They just have the gist of the concepts without a deeper conceptual understanding and ability to apply. They avoid difficult questions. You end up still having to teach them at home. So you’ve paid a premium for a tutor, but still have to do the teaching on your own at home? What’s up with that? I’m Chris, former head of maths at one of Australia’s top Selective Schools. I now help students crush the Selective Entry exam using my consistent repeatable method called HIGH IMPACT LEARNING. 07.01.2022 To the parents of highschoolers: Is your kid struggling with maths? Have they already resigned themselves to I’m just not good at maths? Is homework frustrating for them? Perhaps YOU are stressing out over their grades?... Having been a teacher at the local schools, I know there are lots of students out there who are in struggle town but are not asking for the help they so desperately need! If we don’t fix this early before they go into VCE, they are going to be stressed, anxious and time-poor all year. They would be trying to catch up on prior years work at the same time as coping with the incredible workload of senior high school. Do you want your kids to feel confident in maths, no more feeling frustrated trying to figure things out themselves, no more feeling anxious before a test, and ultimately improve their grade? Call/PM/Text me, your friendly neighbourhood tutor, for the one-way ticket out of struggle town!

06.01.2022 This is why some of the best teachers leave the system. It's a real crime to our education system

02.01.2022 : . With the recent government announcement, we are forced to go back into lockdown. Even when restrictions do ease up again, it’s no secret that there needs to be a shift in mindsets and recognition that online experiences are here to stay for a while. ... It may not be ideal for everyone and understandably, some have been burnt by remote learning before. We have learnt a few things during the first lockdown and thus, here are some ways to help with your learning effectiveness when taking tuition online. ) ’ -. This might push you out of your comfort zone, but show your face on your webcam! Much of why learning is more effective face-to-face is because of the nuance of facial expression. Your body language tells your teacher if you lack understanding, are confused, or when you have that lightbulb moment! In a study of 40 teachers, it was deemed facial expressions are very essential and important, not only for themselves, but also for the acquisition of students’ learning outcomes. Don’t be shy, put on your brightest smile in front of the camera! ) ‘’ . I cannot stress how important this is: I highly recommend a touch-screen laptop or tablet and stylus. Similar to an offline experience, learning is a two-way street, demonstrating your knowledge is the sure-fire way to work with your tutoring to best improve your outcomes. If it is only your tutor who has the technology while you do not, it is no better than watching a YouTube lecture. In a 1998 publication, Assessment and Classroom Learning, researchers Black & William found the importance of ‘assessing in the process of learning’ for students and teachers to adapt learning and teaching styles. You need to demonstrate what you know in order to shape the next step in learning, and now we have to find ways to do this when your platform moves online. ) . Do your homework, scan it or type it up and send it in. In person, it is easy for your tutor to ‘sight’ your work to ensure you have demonstrated an understanding of the previous lesson. Whether it is the full working out of a mathematical problem, or a creative writing piece, it is advantageous when your tutor is able to check these outside of class and provide you with feedback during the online session. According to a publication by Australian Institute of Teaching and Student Leadership (AITSL), high quality feedback can improve student learning by as much as eight months. Show full working and write full essays, submit your homework before class, to best ensure your tutor has the time to give you feedback.
