25.01.2022 I have been following the issues surrounding the Victorian response to COVID 19 with the same interest many of you have. I was particularly interested in the criticism of communication with the largely migrant communities where for a number of reasons COVID 19 cases are the highest in the City. We would all be very aware of the posters and TV and radio ads to communicate to people, but that is not really communication, its just broadcast. Broadcast relies on a) people bein...g tuned into your station b) understanding the message and being prepared to follow the action, and that in turn relies on c) them thinking the messages are from a trusted source. One of the biggest problems was that the people getting sick from the hotel quarantine situation were also part of communities who were finishing a huge festival called Eid al Fitr. At this festival it is traditional for people to come together to celebrate. Eat food, dance, sing, play games. Big, big, families from tiny babies to old, frail grandmas. Good communication MUST be based on knowing your audience. What's important to them, what are the best ways to reach them, who do they trust, who will they follow (be influenced by) if you are trying to get behaviour change. Broadcast is only one communications tool. You can't just change the language and expect people will get your message, understand your message and buy-in to your message in the form of taking the action you want. This does not abrogate personal responsibility. I am asking everyone to be mindful and steer clear of the four "S's". Stupidity, selfishness, self-absorption and suspicion.

18.01.2022 Something I have been banging on about for a while. Just translating a poster framed up for one cultural audience is NOT good communication. And in this case even the translation seems suspect!! Communication must come from a trusted source. Where are the community leader advocacy and ambassador programs/ direct adverting - potentially on SM platforms? https://www.abc.net.au//coronavirus-messages-tran/12550520

05.01.2022 Sharing this for a friend but it is important and the media are in a quandary on reporting on this. One school of thought is that it leads to increased suicides, the other side is that we must talk about this more openly to address why and to prevent. The next added 6 weeks are going to be the killer. ... in VIC... 100 people in the first lockdown committed suicide in the first week alone.... That was only in Victoria. ... and 3000+ nation wide since the "panicdemic" ... yet ...we seem to hear nothing of this ... because you can’t catch Suicide, I have had some people respond... just repeat that a few times and think about it .... yes it is viral it’s growing at faster rates than COVID up 50% in Aus alone .. yet nothing... no media ... nothing... The mental health issues related to lockdown and the pandemic are especially hard for people with depression. People need human contact/interaction... The wonderful charity MIND have a 24 hour helpline: 1300 554 660 Please could any two of my Facebook friends just copy and repost to share the helpline far and wide. Just two. Any two. Say done! Looks like a great program as always and this year from the comfort of my home (alas the four walls are closing in). Looking forward to having my brain stimulated and stretched https://www.aidr.org.au//australian-disaster-resilience-c/
