23.01.2022 In class recently we have been giving a lot of focus on "giving up the apart of the body that is held". This means that when an attacker comes, allow them to ac...tually have the body part totally - zero attachment. Keep one point, maintain centreline, but give up something. While ever we have intention, we can be defeated, when we give it up through total relaxation we can read the attackers intent through the tanden ball and control it through the soles of the feet. Of course we need to maintain an immovable body expanded in six directions and use the universal principles.... It would probably also be a good idea to be a little bit handy with a sword After about three weeks of this focus, I came across this quote from Shioda Shihan, and what do you know, we may be onto something with this...... "You have to be able to remove your strength and at the same time firmly maintain the form of the technique. When an opponent uses strength and comes in to grab you, you have to do the opposite and lose your strength .In reality, letting go of your strength is an extremely difficult thing to do. Maintain the centre line firmly throughout your body and let go of your strength, then you can take in the opponent’s power and control it. You mustn’t even have the slightest resistance at this point. This is the goal toward which aikido strives. It’s not about technique or anything else. If you can’t let go of your power like this, you won’t really be able to go up against an opponent who is physically stronger." Shioda So, build an Aiki body, (fudoshin - immovable body) then let go of the attachment to such a body. Trapped in the form remains in the form..... Become formless, transcend the kata. Takemusu Aiki was never the structure, it was the platform to transcend the structure........
