23.01.2022 Why is balance and coordination important for children? Balance and Coordination is crucial for young children. It provides children with the relevant gross motor skills to join in with sports and plenty more physical activities. An exciting way for children to improve on this, is with stepping stones. These stepping stones are a perfect way to help improve childrens coordination, balance, gross motor, visual perception and concentration.

21.01.2022 Also, check out the video of our director, Katie Johnson, talking more about the role!

21.01.2022 24th November, 2013. I decided to make a big choice... Integrated OT was a long time dream of mine. For the past seven years >> this has taken many forms and has seen so many changes. We have supported hundreds of clients and their families, travelling all over Melbourne and surrounding suburbs, stopping at hundreds of McDonalds for a toilet and coffee break and climbing in and out of body socks, cubby houses, under beds, through amazing backyard orchards, tackling the world ...of public transport and more recently, getting a virtual rollercoaster ride around amazing homes. For me, the most *wild* part of this whole thing is the sheer number of evenings spent doubting myself and abilities [and crying about it - like, *nothing* has even happened yet]. This all happened *before* even registering the business. Before the 24th November, 2013. On this day, seven years ago, I went to work as with every other day; catching the train to Collingwood to do a job which I really liked and had been *so* exciting at the beginning. The role I was working in was a corporate one - still with an Occupational Therapy lense - but not working *with* people [I still was - hard to stop that kind of thing when you choose the #therapistlyf ]. I was there as a "consultant" [Translation: come up with ideas and help teach the crew how to do them (while still doing their other job)] and had gradually become frustrated with the feeling that even though I was helping in that role, I didn't feel like the needle was moving far enough. Teemed with a long term gut-feeling that I could be making a greater impact if I was doing 'my own version' of occupational therapy. I think it's fair to say, that the past 7 years have been full of excitement and character building of the best variety. It's exciting to think about this wonderful practice's next 'lap around the sun' and finding out where we are 12 months down the track. Catch ya there! [Visual Description: This is a picture of our director, Katie, sitting in her car, wearing a red top and looking 7 years younger and more rested. Behind Katie are therapy equipment items - stacked up in the back of her car, as usual].

19.01.2022 Meet Cass. If you have had anything to do with IOT, chances are you have talked with Cass. As our admin support / jack-of-all trades / chief organiser, I'm confident when I say that we ALL rely on her [a lot]. I can't count the amount of times one of the team will come and mention to me "thank goodness for Cass; I was struggling to organise XX and she just sorted it all out right away!". Likewise, when I am discussing appointments or something behind the scenes with clients?... Ususally, we all just agree its best to talk with Cass. Cass is solid and *gets it* when you need help with something. Like doing an appointment reschedule that feels like a Tetris game [Level: Expert]. Or organising an appointment booking [while using a phone interpreter] for a language less commonly spoken, that has approximately x1 interpreter available for that dialect in all of Melbourne [for real, not even joking]. And her response to these requests? "yeh, sure" >> and off she goes - no big fuss (meanwhile you feel like you've just asked her to look after your pet hyena and she might realise at any second #suprisedface]. So while Cass is not putting on some big fancy show >> she is totally leading us; herself; our clients. In a humble way, but a *really* valuable one. Cass is great at self-leadership and persevering when something seems difficult. We lean into these values and put a big focus on this for all. And the best part? What you experience with Cass >> is setting the tone for what you can expect from the rest of the team. Welcome to IOT. [Visual Description: Video in fast motion of Cass being the legend that she is and doing work in the office. Cass is wearing a pale purple jumper and glasses. Cass is up and down from her desk to the printer multiple times and there are three bright pictures in the background.]

18.01.2022 We have some fun new soft play shapes set up at our clinic for our clients to come in and try - see if you can complete the circuit! Great for developing lots of core strength and providing different types of sensory input!

16.01.2022 Well this week has been interesting...here is a short video on something we have been practicing as a team!

15.01.2022 Great work from one of our clients for making up some delicious golden pancakes.. for his first time ever!

15.01.2022 You might've wondered what the [visual description] section is down the bottom of the text on our social media posts recently. If you have - you're not alone [lots of people have asked]. So I've made a video explaining a bit more about screen readers - what they do, who they help and *roughly* demonstrating how they work. What's wonderful *these days* is that mainstream devices [like your phone] are quite easy to make more accessible. Translation - you don't always have to ha...ve a *super* expensive [high-tech] device to accommodate different needs - there is now a lot more expectation that devices be inclusive/accessible for all. It makes sense, really. Often with devices, it is a case of *playing around* to get the setting right in order to best support your needs. We are totally not experts, however luckily our team have mostly grown up in a generation where fiddling with technology is the norm, so we are happy to have a *play* and try to help you get your tech working to really support you. [Visual Description: This is a video about visual descriptions. The video is a screen recording demonstrating how to turn on the screen reading function on iOS devices.]

14.01.2022 Introducing Jessica Curran If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three things would you bring? My dog, my yoga mat and a tent. If you could be any animal in the world, what would you be and why? A Giraffe. I am only 5 foot, so not having to ask someone to get something off the top shelf would be nice. ... What is your favourite season? Hands down, Summer! I love being able to go to the beach and not freeze, longer days and warmer nights! Its Christmas, my absolute favourite time of the year and my birthday! Also warmer days is a great excuse to get ice cream everyday. See more

13.01.2022 Here is an update video for our clients to let you know what our plans are at the moment!

13.01.2022 What are you looking forward to this week? I'm looking forward to catching up with family who I haven't seen for several months. I'm also looking forward to having a more organised week [or at least trying to >> the meal prep has been done]. Why do you care about what I'm looking forward to? You probably don't. But it's relevant [*really*]. Here's why >> your R.A.S [translation: reticular activating system]. This little trickster is a part in your brain which is a group of n...erves in our brainstem. Their job is to filter information so that we can focus on the relevant parts that are important to us [blah, blah, blah, starting to get complicated sounding etc.]. Example: You know when you want to get a new car and then suddenly everyone [literally, everyone] is driving the same sort of car as what you like [hint: Kia didn't just have a buy one, get one free deal]. Everywhere you look, there is someone driving a Kia Carnival and you've barely ever noticed them before now. It's your RAS >> filtering out all the other cars to focus on the details that it decides are relevant [answer: family mover with fancy sliding doors, bulk seats and driver skilled at negotiating carguments]. Your RAS takes what you focus on and creates a filter for it. It then sifts through the data and presents only the pieces that are important to you. So when you're practicing gratitude and thinking about what you're looking forward to this week? You're giving your RAS the gift of helping it focus on this positive side of the week >> increasing the likelihood that it will pan out that way. Trickey, hey! Visual Description: [Image is a green and yellow textured background with the following quote by Jim Kwik: "your mind is always eavesdropping on your self-talk".

13.01.2022 Not long left to go now until school holidays end! Anybody got someone going off to school / highschool for the first time this year? Thank goodness one of the school mums suggested getting school uniforms before Christmas because oh my the lines! [speaking of...anyone want to give me a #loan *yikes!] On a serious note though, how's everyone feeling about their kidlets going back to school? I feel like its going to be weird after such a stop-start 2020. It's like we never got... in a good groove! [Visual Description: This is a meme which is on a pink background and has coulourful splotches. The text reads "parents dropping their kids off on the first day back to school". Imagine the picture - a bunch of adults in plain clothes sprinting away from the school. Hah!]

11.01.2022 An update about online therapy and a model which we use for this! https://www.loom.com/share/f561933db7324ca0a80c916b51c23fa9

11.01.2022 In follow on from our previous post - We are lucky enough to work in a multi-level office building and are located next to the lifts - so we thought it would be a great opportunity to spread some community awareness for #ruokday . Here are some of the responses so far!

10.01.2022 Life is short work somewhere awesome! We are looking for occupational therapists to join our team both in Werribee and Bundoora. We are after someone who is enthusiastic, friendly and is able to display initiative. Ideally, we are after someone with experience to continue to add to our team dynamic. Integrated OT has been around since 2014 and has continued to grow over this time, so we are excited to offer this position to join our awesome team and come on board the jour...Continue reading

09.01.2022 Want to know something funny about this? Lots of people have this experience [or at least something similar]. Like, it is funny in a *face palm* kind of way. But also, not that uncommon. Sometimes you're just plain distracted [because, life]. But sometimes its for another reason - which is to do with your body needing a little more *input* [cue, vague sounding therapy word which covers a lot of different thing]. Translation: your body isn't totally aware of itself. Ever heard... the expression "you don't know your own strength"? [This]. To cut to the point - it's not really a *problem* to be fixed #perspective . But for some people it can be handy to have a little more understanding of the levers that control how this works in your body. If this is you or someone you know, hit the link in the description to get in touch. [Visual Description: The image is a picture of a back-to-front Meercat which has a confused look on its face and a thought bubble with an "oh dear" emoji face in it. The background is two toned purple and there is text stating "Accidentally took the garbage bin all the way back up the driveway without realising it was still full... apparently dragging 50kg of rubbish up a steep hill is an unnoticeable weight to me".

03.01.2022 Today is #ruok day - Here is our clinic setup to help bring awareness to this day!

03.01.2022 Here are 3 ideas to help you get more focused and reduce feeling overwhelmed as a primary caregiver

02.01.2022 One question we’re asked all the time is what toys are most recommended to help kids development? Today, we wanted to share our answer to that with you and hopefully save a few of you some and In short >> the more simple, straight forward toys are *better* >> they allow more space for kids to get creative, add their own modifications and just generally get into [flow] play. ... There are heaps [heaps] of different ways that kids play [think pretend play, structured games, creative play etc.] and so this is something to keep in mind >> are you looking for something to play together, as a family or for independent play [they can be pretty different in terms of what type of activity suits this]. Some kids will LOVE playing with whatever is in the recycling bin, but keep in mind that while this is lovely, for other kids it will be a little too abstract and far from what they can imagine play could be [incase you're wondering why your kids *don't just play with boxes* etc.] Here are 5 new play items [things] we have recently picked up - in regards to how good they are for play, we will get back to you once we have given them a burl! Uno flip - play with others Walking beams - independent gross motor/coordination play Bright buttons boardgame - small (2 person) or bigger group game Tablet draw and wipe - individual play or 2 person turn taking Storage tubs - not a game [could be though] - to keep all your game bits and pieces together.

02.01.2022 3 Unexpected Opportunities to Practice Important Fine Motor and Coordination Skills. Cable Ties Thats right, cable ties - like the shed variety. These are quite inexpensive (people will often have a couple lying around) and can be used to tie things up - whatever your childs interest might be. They are great for working on hand arches (which is a pre-writing skill) and sustaining grip on the tie they are also great for hand eye coordination with finding the loop where the... tie is inserted and pulling it through. Bike locks The number combination variety - some of the opportunities include holding onto the ridges so you can turn the dials, lining up the numbers, holding the bike lock with both hands. The key variety (bonus) - finding the lock part and turning it in the right direction, hand eye coordination to put the key up to the lock and line it up, holding and turning the key. Sorting cutlery Dishwasher or not, sorting cutlery can be fun (especially if it isnt one of your everyday tasks). Set your kids up with a chair if they cant see in the drawer and get them to select the appropriate cutlery and the section of the drawer to put it in. Make it easier by limiting the number of categories (eg; only knifes, two choices, three choices etc.) and build from there. this is requiring visual scanning, hand eye coordination, balance, sorting. Fine motor skills practice will come as a product of this.

02.01.2022 Any parents out there able to relate to this? Haha, my apologies in advance if you can't stop singing this after seeing this meme [not really, sucked in! hah] [Visual description: This is a meme on a colourful pink and green background. The text reads "Why you so quiet? What's on your mind?" and the image is of a human head which has text where the brain/mind would be, reading the words to the ever so delightful kids show "Paw Patrol, Paw Patrol, be there on the double...". If you know, you know. You're welcome.]
