19.01.2022 Think you shouldn’t exercise because it could make your arthritis symptoms worse? Most of the time, that’s just not the case. Research shows otherwise " The researchers from Queen Mary University show for the first time how mechanical forces experienced by cells in joints during exercise prevent cartilage degradation by suppressing the action of inflammatory molecules which cause osteoarthritis. A Few Smart Exercise Rules for Arthritis. 1) Don’t overdo it when you’re having a... flare. According to the American Council on Exercise, individuals with rheumatoid arthritis should not exercise during periods of inflammation, and regular rest periods should be stressed during exercise sessions. However, gentle [range-of-motion] exercises are appropriate during these conditions. 2) Time your exercise around when you feel your best. Avoid exercising too close to bedtime. 3)Wear good athletic shoes with shock absorption and support for your feet. If you’ve got poor shoes, that’s transmitting more force through your joints. 4)Ask for help - If your arthritis symptoms don’t feel well controlled, it’s a good idea to see a physical therapist with experience treating people with arthritis. If you continue to do a movement with improper form, it could have more wear-and-tear on your body than if you had proper alignment. 5) Know the difference between discomfort and pain. It’s normal to be uncomfortable after exercising, especially if your body isn’t used to it, but you shouldn’t feel like you’re in pain. If pain is greater two hours after exercise than it was before, reduce the length and intensity of your next session, advises the American College of Sports Medicine. 6) Be gentle with yourself. Don’t get frustrated. You know what this is. You know what you have. It might not always be like this, and there is hope.

19.01.2022 When runners are told to just stop running... In all seriousness, not only is this often unnecessary, it can actually cause MORE harm. Why? Firstly, for runners, running is part of their identity. Take this away & it can bring considerable distress, which further compounds their injury! (McAuliffe et al 2017)... Secondly, the longer that you cease running, the greater the fitness/strength loss, & the bigger mountain you have to climb to get back to pre-injury running levels. Fortunately for MOST running injuries, it is a matter of modification to running rather than stopping completely. For all those injured runners out there who've been told to "Just stop" running, we are here to help you get back to what you love, just hit us up in the DMs #sportsphysio#Integrate#help#RunnersKnee#Kneepain

18.01.2022 Corticosteroid injections for musculoskeletal conditions. Based on the current evidence it is recommended to consider whether short term benefits are truly worth the potential long term risks. It is therefore very important when debating whether or not to receive the injection to understand that cortisone is only a short-term treatment and it will most likely wear off and bring you back to square one. Your first step should always be physiotherapy. At Integrate Physiotherapy ...our team will look at the way you are moving, and assess your body as a whole to help you move and feel your best. Our team supports long-term healing, establishing the driver (or cause) of your pain, to improve your function and movement for activities as simple as getting dressed, to competing in triathlons. 17.01.2022 Physio tip: Posture is everything: think tall, chest lifting, shoulders relaxed, chin tucked in and head level. It may be hard to keep these components going throughout the day, however: the important thing is that you remain relaxed in any posture. Tensing up muscles and holding them tense throughout the day will result in tightness and imbalance. #physiotherapy #goodposturematters #muscletightness #physiotip #wednesday

11.01.2022 CUPPING THERAPY In recent years, there has been a growing trend in the use of cupping therapy. From athletes using it as a treatment modality for a number of injuries to celebrities walking the red carpet with massive red marks over their backs. The cupping process draws blood from your vessels and into your tissue. Cupping is like a reverse massage, using suction rather than pressure to relax the muscles. Your body thinks its been injured, so the theory is that it jumpstar...ts a positive inflammatory response, mobilising antibodies to the area to try to heal it. Cupping for athletes can aid in the recovery process as increased blood flow from cupping may help accelerate the repair of the damaged muscle fibres that result from hard training. Cupping therapy can be used for all musculoskeletal injuries but is particularly effective in neck, back, shoulder and knee injuries. If you are interested in having a cupping session with one of our qualified physios please feel free to contact us on 07 3419 4796 or book online at www.integratephysio.com.au #warnerphysio#cupping#integratephysio#recovery#sportperformance#Rehabilitation#injuryprevention

08.01.2022 Soleus muscle strengthening for ACL injury prevention/ACL Rehabilitation? A study by Maniar et al(2020) published data on muscle activity contributing to shear and rotational forces across the knee joint during single leg landing. What was found??... Soleus generated the greatest amount of posterior (backward) shear force during single leg landing from a 30 cm height - with the potential to decrease anterior shear forces that can lead to ACL overload and injury. From an ACL prevention and rehabilitation perspective - SOLEUS is an important muscle to include in weekly training along with hamstrings. Suffering from an ACL injury or having issues with rehabilitation post surgery. One of our experienced physiotherapists can help. Please feel free to call us on 07 3419 4796 or book online at www.integratephysio.com.au Email: [email protected] if you would like more information. #ACLInjuryprevention#ACLrehabilitation#sportsinjuries#warnerphysio#strength#MSMC

08.01.2022 Are you suffering from recurring hamstring injury?? The Hamstrings are an often neglected muscle group in the body. Located on the back of our thighs, they’re certainly not a glamour muscle group because no one sees them in the mirror. However, this muscle group is extremely vital to the strength of our legs, and the functionality of our spine. Did you know??... The Nordic hamstring exercise can reduce re-injuries by 85%!!!. If you are suffering from repeat or recurring sports related or musculoskeletal lower limb injury please give us a call on 07 3419 4796 for a comprehensive assessment and treatment plan. We are open till late and on weekends too!!! #physiotherapy #sportsinjury # #physiotip #thursday

07.01.2022 Rehab - Trust the process. When working through an injury rehab, pain will often come along for the ride. But its also important to note, it will reduce over time. For some people and some injuries, the pain will completely resolve and youll leave it behind on the side of the freeway.... For some people and some injuries, pain may hang out underneath the backseat of your car, and a little bit of discomfort every now and then might be your new normal. Either way the important thing to understand and remember is that with rehabilitation, your function and ability for you to do things you love will gradually improve over time, and the pain will dampen down. Absolute rest and avoiding activities is not the answer. so please trust the process and keep the course! you will eventually arrive at your destination. Kudos to Mark Surdyka, Mick Hughes & Tom Goom for the wonderful infographic. #integratephysio#warnerphysio#trusttheprocess#PhysioTip

07.01.2022 Clicky Knees ? Should you be worried? A general clicking coming from the knees that does not cause pain, may not be something to worry about. Nevertheless, clicking has been found to be more common those those with sore knees than not. Think back to when the clicking started to occur. Did you have a fall ? Did something whack you in the side of the knee ?... If you cant recall anything specific, and the clicking isnt causing pain, you may be able to breathe a sigh of relief. There is NO literature linking knee crepitus with pathology. The crunching noise you hear can be caused by the movement of fluid behind the patella! Robertson et al. (2017) However, If something happened, or occurred before the clicking started. Then there is a greater chance something has caused this. This is where we come in to help you have that piece of mind, and provide you with rehab that is suited to you if required. #performance#rehab#movepainfree#IntegratePHYSIO. 03.01.2022 Sprains vs Strains A common question we get asked in the clinic by sports people and every day folk is what’s the difference between a strain and a sprain. Although these types of injuries both relate to connective or soft tissue there are some subtle differences that are important to know as these will lead to different treatment plans and outcomes. Below is a quick summary of the differences and what this all means.... Sprains: A Sprain is an injury to a ligament, the stiff fibrous connective tissue that connects bone to bone around a joint. Ligaments are tremendously important and allow movement in the desired directions around our joints but limit the movement in dangerous or non-desirable ways, such as holding our knee together to allow us to walk and play sport with a knee that bends in the desired way. Injuries to these structures can be ranging from a stretch to a complete rupture and classifying these injuries is important to guide management. Strains: A strain is the injury to the contractile tissue that make up a muscle and cause movement at a joint or the Fibrous, elastic tendon that attaches the muscle to a bone. These usually are caused by a fast stretching motion or a load that you are not prepared for, exceeding your muscles’ strength or stretching abilities. What does this mean? Both will initially require treatment and assessment early in the injury management but before getting in to see your Physio it is good practice to use ice and compression to manage pain and swelling around the injured area as well as limiting your movements to low load pain free activity. Next, physio assessment of the severity of your injury is important as this will guide treatment. For example, a Grade 1 sprain that is really stable may require some support (taping/bracing) to limit further damage to the affected ligament and is possible to return to activity as soon as your pain and function allows. With more severe strains and sprains further investigations and treatment may be required. Physiotherapy is really important in rehab regardless of the severity of sprain or strain. Rehab exercises aimed at increasing your muscles’ capacity i.e. strength and length or balance and control around a joint, will help to safely return you to activity without having a reoccurring injury.

02.01.2022 Ankle Sprains: Not so simple.. Lateral ankle sprains commonly occur during sporting activities such as Netball, Basketball, AFL and Soccer, but it wouldn't be strange to see an occasional dance- floor related ankle sprain too. Regardless of how it occurred, 40% of the first time lateral ankle sprains unfortunately go onto develop chronic ankle instability within 1 year ( Doherty et al, 2016).... KEY MESSAGE: "Simple" ankle sprains aren't so simple. Just because your ankle feels better after a couple of weeks, does not automatically mean that your range of movement, strength, balance and power has restored back to normal to perform your favourite activity or sport. These things take time and hard work. Listen to your physio and COMPLETE your rehabilitation. Don't be part of the 30% that develop chronic ankle instability!
