25.01.2022 Cortisol is a stress hormone, and when we are constantly on high alert or living under the gun of the fight or flight response, we mobilize an enormous amount o...f the body’s energy for some threat in our livesreal or imaginedand it causes our immune system to lower. Thus, the lower our immune system, the more susceptible we are to sickness and disease. And as cortisol levels go up, a chemical called IgA goes down. This isn’t good because IgA is a protein, one of the strongest building blocks of life. IgA is responsible for the healthy function of our body’s supreme internal defense system called the immune system. It’s constantly fighting a barrage of bacteria, viruses, and organisms that invade and/or are already living within the body’s internal environment. During the course of a recent workshop, we asked our 120 study participants to move into an elevated emotional state such as love, joy, or gratitude for nine to ten minutes, three times a day, to determine if we could do the reverse. If we could elevate our emotional states, could we raise our immune system and reduce stress hormones like cortisol? We discovered at the conclusion of the event that the cortisol levels of our participants dropped by three standard deviations, and their IgA levels shot up on average from 52.5 to 86. 22.01.2022 Your brain is a complete record of your past, & your mind is the product of your consciousness. By responding with the same brain hardware that matches what you... remember, you’re creating a level of mind that is identical to the past, because your brain is automatically firing existing circuits to reflect everything you already know, have experienced, & thus can predict. When you think from your past memories, you can only create past experiences. As all of the knowns in your life cause your brain to think and feel in familiar ways, thus creating knowable outcomes, you continually reaffirm your life as you know it. And since your brain is equal to your environment, then each morning, your senses plug you into the same reality & initiate the same stream of consciousness. What do most of us do each morning after we’ve been plugged into our reality by these sensory reminders of who we are, where we are, and so forth? We remain plugged into the past self by following a highly routine, unconscious set of automatic behaviors. Thus, if your environment remains the same and you react by thinking in the same way, then according to the quantum model of reality, shouldn’t you create more of the same? Think of it this way: the input remains the same, so the output has to remain the same. How, then, can you ever create anything new?

But to this end the seed must know about the human condition. So that during the maturation process it can satiate its fruit with the right correlation of substances to heal a specific individual of his disease, if indeed he has it or is prone to it. In order for the seed of a cucumber, tomato or any other plant grown in ones plot to have such information, the following steps are necessary: Before planting, put into your mouth one or more little seeds, hold them in your mouth, under the tongue, for at least nine minutes. Then place the seed between the palms of your hands and hold it there for about thirty seconds. During this time it is important that you be standing barefoot on the spot of earth where you will later be planting it. Open your hands, and carefully raise the seed which you are holding to your mouth. Then blow on it lightly, warming it with your breath, and the wee little seed will know everything that is within you.

13.01.2022 Neuroanatomy is the way your brain is organized, physically. Its one of the toughest subjects in medical and chiropractic schools because parsing the brain is ...tricky. Our brain has the texture of an over-ripe avocado, and differentiating one structure from another (at least in the dissection lab) is not so easy. But heres the thing, to get a grip on how to move from emotional dysregulation to self-regulation, its helpful to know how the brain communicates internally, one layer at a time. Our brains took eons to evolve and carry their evolution within their structure. Built like a ramshackle house, each evolutionary leap forward is housed in tissue thats stuck on top of the layer that came before. Neuroanatomy can intimidate people when they believe its too complicated. I was thinking about this recently and wondered if neuroanatomical concepts might be more accessible if explained using an analogy already familiar to most folks. In the spirit of exploration, jump in with me, using the chakra system as our analogous equivalent! If you were going to compress the chakra system inside your brain, the first chakra would map onto your brainstem. In the picture, the brainstem is illustrated in red. Think of the brainstem as our reptile brain, and the first rung in our brains evolutionary ladder. Our senses bring in lots of raw information, and the brainstem (aka root chakra) controls how we respond to our environment at the survival level. We encode responses to our world through a path that moves data from our senses directly to the brainstem. Its the central nervous systems landing pad for data coming from outside our bodies. The brainstem is also the terminus of the vagus nerve - where this powerful cranial nerve plugs in. The free flow of info through the vagus promotes the movement required for digestion and absorption. This is known as peristalsis. Besides organizing movement of food through our guts, the vagus also orchestrates the biochemical output of our microbiome. Dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, and epinephrine are produced by our microbiome. The output of these mood-regulating bacteria gets deposited in crypts between the villi in our small intestine. It turns out they take their orders about what kinds of chemicals to produce directly from the vagus nerve. I bet you didnt know that theres a branch of the vagus nerve in each and every villi, at a density of 25,000 villi per square inch! The ways our guts react to stress links our first and second brain chakras. The information initiated from our brainstem affects specific survival functions like heart and breath rate and peristalsis. When tension and worry limits information flow through the vagus nerve, we get constipated (it puts the stall in peri-stall-sis) or diarrhea (when information flows too fast - along with other things). Thats some pretty serious gut-brain connection and reciprocity! When these symptoms take turns, we call it IBS. The second brain-chakra is the limbic system. After the brainstem, its the next stop for data processing, illustrated above in shades of orange. Packets of limbic information probably look a little something like this: "Okay, is this tiger going to eat me, or do I eat it?" Or, "Is this an attack on me, or am I safe?" This is our mammalian brain, where all mammals process their sense of safety which is the next step up from survival concerns. Like our second chakra, our limbic system is relational in nature. Every time we encounter another, our basic safety is one of the first instinctual questions to arise. Located in the mid-brain, our limbic system is a biochemical powerhouse that contributes to digestion by making and distributing messages that inhibit or encourage gut motility. Gut motility is the movement of food, AKA peristalsis. Biochemistry in the limbic system is a double-edged sword. It not only makes chemicals, its quite chemically sensitive. The limbic brain quickly becomes the accumulation ground for toxins that produce mysterious symptoms, defying easy diagnosis, and treatment. Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and other complicated pathologies, including Parkinsons relate back to trauma and troubles within the gut/limbic axis. Our limbic brain associates incoming information to past experiences, then decides how to respond at metabolic levels. When were feeling safe and physically healthy, the limbic systems ability to regulate metabolism goes pretty smoothly. We eat, digest, and excrete without undue discomfort or need for attention. Emotional self-regulation is one beneficial outcome of cultivating this kind of health in our bodies. But stress sends both our emotional and physical bodies off the rails and "going limbic" typically shows up as the Four Fs of self-dysregulation. I include fawning in the more familiar trio of Fight, Flight, or Freeze. We fawn by apologizing with our bodies - simpering and playing small, whether were feeling small or not. Fawning behavior happens when a dog rolls over and shows his belly when meeting another dog. This dog-gesture says, "Oh, Im the bottom, youre the top. Ive given you permission for dominance... this time." Primitive emotional reactions from the limbic system change our state at lightning speed. We may start out feeling present and alert, with our body in a state of balanced homeostasis. But when we perceive a threat, we flip. Once the brainstem manages our first chakra survival mechanisms, it tosses any continued perception of risk upstairs to the limbic system to see whether it maps onto something familiar. Do we have a habitual response ready to put into action? This happens almost simultaneously, and such a rapid transit results in instinctual behavior, AKA the Four Fs. Suddenly were fighting, fleeing, fawning, or in freeze, before we even know how we got there. Within the limbic system, the thalamus is our junction box, converting both electrical and chemical information as incoming data moves through. Chemical info drops down through the thalamus to the hypothalamus, landing in our pituitary gland. The pituitary gives marching orders to the whole rest of our endocrine system, including the thyroid, pancreas, adrenals, ovaries, testes, etc. These glands release chemicals that further influence our behavior and mood via a host of hormones and polypeptides like estrogen, testosterone, opiates, and oxytocin. Mood disorders have to do with limbic miscalculations about whats coming at us and often relate back to trauma and developmental conditioning. When mood disorders are present, the meaning of incoming information gets amplified. Mood disorders not only affect our emotions, they also map back onto gut motility, adrenal output, and how well our bodies adapt to incoming challenges. Mood disorders distort incoming data through a trauma-shaped lens. We react to our world instead of responding, demonstrating an inability to tell whats actually happening from what we believe is occurring. Example: when we wear the wrong eyeglasses, we dont see our world clearly. When we perceive our world through a lens of trauma, we might over-react to a simple mistake. We blow up or even blow someone out of the water when what actually happened may not have been that big of a deal. Lets drive this metaphorical bus even further. The third chakra inside your brain is the cerebral cortex, shown above in yellow on the drawings left side. Its made of roiled and coiled neural tissue (to maximize surface area), producing the folds and bumps associated with typical brain depictions. The cortex allows for the processing of memories and compares them with the consequences of actions that follow. Lets say you feed and tame a feral cat. Over time the cat learns its safe with you and allows you to come close while reacting to others by hiding under the bed. The purpose of the cerebral cortical layer is to interpret the Four Fs. Our cortex inhibits knee-jerk reactivity by slowing the information racing through our nervous system long enough to get a grip. Through inhibitory factors, we get time to examine whats happening from a broader context. Hopefully, we begin to see an event, and also the space around that event. By slowing down, we get a chance to consider our response instead of jumping into hasty and potentially damaging reactivity. Eastern meditative traditions call this mindfulness. The neocortex is the analog to the fourth chakra. An outer layer of tissue lies over the cerebral cortex, shown in green on the right side of the drawing. In classical yogic literature, the fourth chakra is the birthplace of compassion. In our brain, the neocortex is the home of self-reflection. Once we determine whats happening, can we differentiate raw data coming in from a threat to our survival, and simply see it as information? This is the newest part of our brain by evolutionary standards, the so-called human brain. The neocortex allows us to reflect on past experiences related to our present situation. We can respond to triggers and compare notes between the past (what just happened?), the present (how do we feel about it?), and the future (what are the consequences of responding rather than reacting?). This complex back-and-forth dance of safe, unsafe, or neutral, and whats my most appropriate response? is initiated here, allowing us the option to parse accurate perception (and an appropriate response) from projection (with the potential for an embarrassing reaction). What happened in our past that reminds us of this particular situation? What was the outcome? Are we reading too much into whats happening at this moment? These examples of inhibitory pathways from the neocortex, down through the cortex, into our limbic system, and then into our brainstem and back up again for integration, have the possibility of changing our behaviors and their results. As humans, we consider our ability to self-reflect to be unique to our species, although sometimes I wonder... Unique or not, by practicing self-reflection and self-compassion, there are ways to get to self-regulation through every layer of our neuroanatomy. We can learn to surf these pathways to gain a deeper relationship with our reactivity. We can employ mindfulness and breath practices, and work in some surprising ways to directly contact our autonomic nervous system. (Coffee enema, anyone?) We can learn to slow the ricochet from incoming-info-impulse-reaction to something less hasty. The biological aspects of Productivity and Motivation comes down to your Neurotransmitters and Hormones. Many people have some misconceptions about these. Oxytocin is NOT just the Love Hormone. Its the Social Amplification hormone. If you like or dislike someone, oxytocin will amplify those feelings whether good or bad. Dopamine is NOT a Reward Chemical as many people think. Its a neurotransmitter that is created WHILST doing activities that are meaningful. Try your own daily experiment. Exercise, Meditate, be playful, laugh, kiss, hug, look into someone eyes and maybe even have an orgasm (or two!) and see how your motivation & productivity changes.
10.01.2022 You dont go straight from "chaos" to "simple" or "complicated." There is a phase in between, and its complexity. In complexity, the past does not help much either expertise. Its a new reality. You have to improvise, experiment. Learn as you walk. Failure is the only option.You cannot decide what "order" will look like from a chaotic situation, then a complex one. The order, the "solution" will emerge. Emerge from a series of hypotheses that you test. The more tests, the mo...re chance to see a direction emerge.COVID is a "good" example. It created a chaotic situationno time to think. We had to act. Close the borders. Shut down the economy. Lockdown people at home. Emergency answers to deal with the chaos.Then, the "experts" started to speak, to propose, to decide. Contradictions after contradictions. Orders after counter-orders. Why that? Because in a complex situation, there are no repeatable causal relations. The state is fully new. There are no existing competences. There are no good practices. There are no experts in this new state. The only way to learn and find answers is to act and experiment.The best tool ever to understand/analyze situations is the Cynefin framework developed by Dave Snowden.

Im working with a few small companies at the moment, getting teams to assess their strengths and weakness, and facilitating the discussion on the other side.
