On behalf of our children and families from Integricare Preschool Strathfield, some of the staff drove to the Foodbank warehouse in Glendenning to deliver donations from our recent food drive. To what appears like a small donation, we were met with incredible gratitude from the wonderful volunteers there. This type of giving back to the community is so important! Three in ten Australians are now experiencing food insecurity that had not gone hungry before the pandemic. Foodbank NSW & ACT Did you know that Foodbank is the largest provider of vital food and groceries to food relief charities around Australia. Last year alone it sourced enough food and groceries to provide 210,000 meals a day to people in need. A tip from us is to value building childrens letter recognition (both upper & lower case) alongside confidence to also know & write their name in time for primary school. We also say, if a child is interested in learning some of the skills with writing print/alphabets earlier than this, its important to encourage & build on this. The children at Integricare Northmead love learning with GraviTrax. When this activity comes out, we always see the childrens strong focus for long durations of time. They are SO engaged!! So what is GraviTrax? Well, I am glad you asked because it really is a fantastic open-ended learning resource. GraviTrax is a combination of tiles and magnetic tracks used to build a marble run. It encourages children to work together to design and build their own tracks, thus growing their collaboration abilities. As the ball runs through several different components, the children further experiment with gravity, magnetism, and kinetics. They need to problem solve and use their thinking skills to achieve the final goal of propelling the gravity sphere to the finish line. The preschool children at Integricare North Strathfield enjoyed their responsible pet ownership RSPCA incursion yesterday. Leading up to this excursion the children spoke about their pets at home and ways they can care and keep animals healthy. Many of the children knew all of the key factors for good pet ownership! They then continued to grow their learning during the workshop! The presenter covered the people who look after our pets. The children learnt about the veterinarian and inspectors and also the important times when we need to call on those people. We spoke about nutrition, shelter, play, exercise, grooming, and all things that make our pets happy! The children also interacted with toy pets giving them bowls, water, treats, and some children took on the role of the vet giving the cat and puppy medicine and a check-up. But although it seems like a mindless activity, cars and the building of tracks can provide some serious learning. Did you know that as children push cars along a track they have the opportunity to exercise both gross and fine motor skills. Children learn about motion, speed, pressure, direction all through this type of play. They can learn about speed by experimenting with how quickly or slowly the cars go as they make the trip! As they create tracks, they build focus, imagination, and creative thinking. Website: https://integricare.org.au/northstrathfield/ The children at North Strathfield celebrated our national science week by doing plenty of science learning this week. They had a fantastic incursion from #scienceforpreschoolers and also enjoyed many experiments during group time. The children partook in bubble experiments where liquids and gas combined. They enjoyed watching the matter change as well as popping the bubbles for the end result. They planted bean seeds into cotton wool! This will be an ongoing learning process, as we watch the growth sprout. They also took part in volcano experiments in trays and in small groups. What an exciting process it has been seeing the bubbles seep over the sides, measuring and mixing and learning cause and consequence. Other experiment highlights this week were colour changing experiments, volcano races, light tray explorations as well as play with magnets. Science supports a childs willingness to find out information from their own thoughts and actions. This is developing their scientific thinking and reasoning. Scientific thinking with children flourishes and grows when they ask questions, carry out investigations, collect data, and search for answers. We are often challenged with how we can best support children’s learning when it comes to using digital resources in the classroom. We know that there is a fine line between supporting learning verses mindless screen consumption. But there is still a positve place for technology with children. The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) our curriculum, highlights that children should Use information & communications technologies to access information, investigate ideas, & represent their thinking. As time progresses, the world continues to assure its digital reliance. Therefore, it's important for children to have opportunities here. When it comes to this in the pre-school classroom, we use media as an additional outlet for them to demonstrate their creativity, thinking & learning. Tech is fantastic to build on interests, questions, queries, hypotheses, knowledge & explore things from many perspectives or visuals. Supervision is crucial though! How much screen time? Hasn't 2020 has made this SO much harder with us all encouraged to stay at home more often. However, in summary: under 2yrs= no screen time is the best choice. 2-5yrs= no more than 1hr per day. 5yrs=no more than 2hrs per day. Leading up to Easter, our Integricare playgroup team were out in West Ryde and Artarmon and were busy, busy hiding and spreading Easter cheer around the parks. The children at the playgroup had the opportunity to decorate their own paper cups and then collect eggs from all different locations around their favourite park. It was well and truly EGG-citing!
