15.01.2022 Tested a few of our ideas on these pool patrons today... they didn't seem to have as much to say about the lane congestion and water quality as the humans

15.01.2022 Today is Purple Day! It has been an honour to be working with Epilepsy ACT and have the opportunity recently to meet the amazing families living with epilepsy and hearing their stories. It has been eyeopening for me to actually take the time to understand what living with epilepsy actually means for people of all ages and their families. The theme of this year's Purple Day is I CAN. Yes! I certainly attest to the fact that the children I have met who are living with ep...ilepsy are some of the brightest, warm and incredible kids. Performers, dancers, sports stars - just fabulous vivacious kids! They are not letting the management of their epilepsy get in the way of living life to the fullest. Us, their community, should ensure that they always feel like they CAN. However, after only a small insight into what it is like for families living with epilepsy, I feel that there is another part of the story that is often overlooked. These families need our support. What that might look like could be different for every family. This could include: 1. Understand that epilepsy comes in all different forms affecting people in different ways. 2. Learn how to support the management of epilepsy for your friend, family member, colleague or neighbour. 3. Know that these families are constantly managing their family members condition - every day and every night. 4. Think about how you would deal with your child having seizures daily or even over 50 each day. Or how it would feel to know that your child's epilepsy has been undiagnosed despite repeated requests for investigation. 5. Imagine going to school after not sleeping for much of the night as your brain is having active seizures. 6. Know that managing epilepsy with medication has side affects, is complex, trial and error, and often takes many years to find the best combination - if ever. 7. Donate to the ongoing research effort to find out more about managing this condition. Most importantly, take time to understand what each individual or family needs, don't make assumptions that you know what epilepsy is and realise that every person will have a different journey and need different things. Yes they CAN, we must never let people with epilepsy feel they are limited by epilepsy - but they need our support. Our community and governments must learn how they can provide that support.
