22.01.2022 Libraries are a fantastic community resource, especially during times of isolation and need. Read Yovanna's story about how one $200 donation turned into a new project for the whole IOE community to enjoy. https://www.ioe.org.au/introducing-laguna-library/
22.01.2022 Summer has certainly arrived which means an increase in fire risk and subsequently at IOE we have now enacted our Fire Watch system. Below are some links that we suggest the IOE community be accustomed with. All families and workers should be familiar with the bushfire policy which can be found on the IOE website: www.ioe.org.au/about-us/policies/... IOE will base decisions and actions on the forecast fire danger rating to ensure that all people involved in our programs, activities and support are kept safe. Fire ratings can be found on the CFA website: www.cfa.vic.gov.au/warnings-res/total-fire-bans-and-ratings Incidents including the most up to date advice can be found on the Emergency Victoria website: www.emergency.vic.gov.au/respond/ Do not hesitate to contact IOE and/or your relevant coordinator with any concerns or for assistance.

17.01.2022 LIVE AND LOCAL REVIEW - Emma Volard 'For this weekend's Live and Local, we had the fantastic Emma Volard and her partner Jake perform for us. Emma has a wonderfully unique voice with a jazzy vibe, while Jake is a keyboard and musical whizz. It was a delight to spend our Saturday afternoon listening to their performance! The gig began with a catch up and enjoying listening to and viewing some of Emma's film clips (one of which had her enjoying a date with a spider!). We then ...got to hear a range of covers along with some original songs that Emma and Jake have composed together. The night finished with an encore performance of a mash up of Stevie Wonders 'Superstitious' and Wild Cherry's 'Play That Funky Music'. It was a total hit and got everyone dancing! During our artist Q&A we learned that Emma has been drawn to music and singing since before she can remember, while Jake has been playing keyboard for 15 years. Emma and Jake first met when they were 16 years old and have created musical magic ever since. We'd also like to mention that Emma and Jake played their Live and Local gig on their 6th year anniversary, so we'd like to wish them a happy anniversary and thank them again for spending their afternoon with us!' 13.01.2022 There is nothing quite like being a support worker. It's rewarding, challenging, flexible and fun. It gives a unique opportunity to form relationships with families and individuals to genuinely make a different in their lives and communities. It teaches you things you didn't know you needed to know - about yourself, about others and about what's important (and what's not!). This is your chance to see what it's about and join one of the fastest growing sectors in Australia. W...e are now recruiting casual support workers and what is involved and what is required might surprise you. Head to our website to read about the kind of people we are looking for, what's required to start work and to register for one of our upcoming online information sessions. You must attend an information session to start the recruitment process. We have two sessions coming up on 5 and 7 November. Find out everything you need to know and register for a session here: http://bit.ly/BeASupportWorker
13.01.2022 We will remember them. This year, in particular, we have been forced to remember what's important (and what's not). We've all learned more about ourselves, our friends and family and our community. The sacrifices we have made this year, while extremely tough on so many of us, have also allowed us to appreciate the magnitude of the sacrifices that many have made before us. Lest we forget.
12.01.2022 COVID-19 PPE UPDATE We have all been desperately waiting for updated directions from the department regarding PPE. Unfortunately, nothing has been released to date. However, I have found the new direction for health care workers which we can align with. Eye protection is no longer required for Tier 1 PPE. This applies to patient-facing healthcare workers who are providing care and/or treatment to patients assessed as low risk or no risk for coronavirus (COVID-19), against the... clinical criteria for coronavirus (COVID-19). This advice replaces the advice in Guide to the Conventional use of PPE published on 21 October 2020. As apart of our COVID Safe Plan, participants are not receiving services when unwell so it is reasonable to assess support work within IOE as low risk/no risk. Given this status, IOE staff are no longer required to wear eye protection when working with IOE participants. - Belinda James, IOE General Manager

12.01.2022 IOE is a wonderfully diverse community and that’s just the way we want it. Diversity isn’t just about race. Or gender. It’s not just about ability, religion, culture or sexual orientation. Diversity is about believing in the valuable contribution of all people regardless, AND because, of these things. It’s about celebrating differences for the things that we can achieve together. It’s about different experiences, different values and opinions, different perspectives and diff...erent skills brought together. Diversity is a superpower. #diversity #inclusion #diversityisasuperpower #interchangeoe

10.01.2022 LIVE AND LOCAL REVIEW On Saturday night we had our fifth artist, Sally Robbins from Fiction joining us for Live and Local. The night started with a group of 25 very excited attendees having a catch up while watching sneak peak of Fiction's highlight reel on YouTube. Veronica exclaimed 'Everyone, let's get into our mustangs and put our seatbelts on!' (A 'Mustang Sally' reference, which we later convinced Sally to play!)... Sally played a set of well-loved acoustic covers such as 'Horses' by Darryl Braithwaite. LMFAO's 'Sexy & I know It' was played with a jazz twist and was an absolute highlight. Sally sang 'Be my Baby' by Bea Miller for all the Dirty Dancing film fans, she explained that she sung this song while pregnant with her first baby, and now again with her second. We ended the night with 'Bad Guy' by Billie Eilish and a Q&A session. We learnt that Sally started learning to play music when she was a child, she was bad at sport and needed a hobby. This obviously paid off well, as she has gone on to play with a wonderful band, even performing at the Forum in Melbourne and as a support act for Shannon Noll! We also learnt that even as a wedding singer, Sally cries every time she performs 'Shallow' (she's only human!). It was so lovely to have Sally perform for us! 07.01.2022 Always Was, Always Will Be. 'The theme for NAIDOC Week 2020 recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists.... NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact; the very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. Always Was, Always Will Be.' - www.naidoc.org.au This week is the perfect time to take a moment to celebrate, acknowledge and share in our country's rich history and culture.
06.01.2022 LIVE AND LOCAL REVIEW - ROB SNARSKI On Saturday evening we had the pleasure of listening to Rob Snarski, live from the IOE Keith Thornton Room. Rob has played in bands such as The Blackeyed Susans and The Triffids. Rob set the 'beer garden' vibe with an acoustic guitar, some fairy lights and a green velvet backdrop. This is the first time we've had an artist play a full set of original songs, and we were in for a treat! A stand out song for us was 'All God’s Creatures', a son...g written about climate change and the current issues the world is facing due to global warming. During lockdown, Rob has been working on a project called Song Gifts. This involves him writing songs for people based on information the customer has given, one of which was a gift from a husband to his wife who were meant to be travelling Europe but whose plans had to change due to COVID-19. We admire Rob's ability to compose songs from everyday life. He performed a song for us based on an encounter he had with taxi driver in Brisbane. The taxi driver was originally not very forthcoming, but over the trip he and Rob formed a bond which allowed Rob to produce a powerfully touching story in the form of music. Rob is extremely descriptive in his lyrics, involving sensory aspects and the way colours make us feel and how they exist in the world. Veronica deeply appreciated this and shares the same values. Live and Local has been such a wonderful experience over lockdown, we have a few more left for the year, but can't wait to be able to enjoy live music all together in venues again in the near future!' - Veronica, Rhiannon, and Brooke

04.01.2022 It’s no surprise that 2020 has been an extraordinarily tough year for the over 2.65 million carers in Australia. This Carers Australia National Carers Week, to say we are proud of the carers in the IOE community is an understatement. To the carer who had finally achieved the very delicate balance that worked for their family when a global pandemic threw everything into chaos; To the carer who was already stretched to breaking point when everything changed and forced th...em to find the strength to keep going; To the carer who was about to take the first step in their caring journey and had to take it in unprecedented circumstances; When supports were put on pause, changed or cancelled and when requirements and restrictions changed day after day, carers have kept going. Because they had to. The job of a carer is never on pause. It’s never cancelled and it keeps going even when a worldwide crisis changes everything. To all the carers in the IOE community and around the country WE SEE YOU. AND WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU! #carers #nationalcarersweek #proud
