25.01.2022 Last week we had a chance to sit down for morning tea with Mr. Gareth Mawson-Thomas who is the grandson of Sir Douglas Mawson, one of the most notable geologists in Australian history. During his expedition, Sir Douglas Mawson attained 6.5 million square kilometres of the Antarctic continent on behalf of Australia. As one of our most elegant suites is named after him- it was a special moment for us to receive a rare photo of Sir Douglas Mawson after he was knighted for his ac...hievements as an explorer and scientist. This photo will be displayed in the Douglas Mawson suite for our guests to enjoy a slice of Australian history. The suit he wears in the photo now exhibits at the Australian Polar Collections gallery in the South Australian Museum. Today, the area Sir Douglas Mawson attained is used by scientists for important Antarctic research in climate, weather and wildlife- helping to highlight global issues such as climate change and changing ocean systems.
