11.01.2022 This afternoon the kids took their Science Experiments to the Kitchen. How YUMMY do their 5 minute Chocolate Mug Cakes look? Ingredients: 1/3 cup self-ra...ising flour 1 tbls cocoa pinch of salt 1 1/2 tbls firmly packed brown sugar 1 egg 2 tbls milk 1 tbls melted butter 1/4 tsp vanilla extract Method: Sift flour, cocoa powder and salt into a small bowl, stir through the sugar. In a separate small bowl, whisk the egg, milk, butter and vanilla. Add wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir with a fork until just combined. Spoon mixture into a 2 cups capacity (500 ml) mug. Microwave on high for 70-90 seconds/ until pudding has risen and too is just set. That means that the average 3 year old has about an 8 minute attention span before their mind is going to wander and start thinking about anoth...er activity or thought.. 10 minutes for our average Kindergartener. . 15 minutes for our 10 year olds. . This is an important thing for us to keep in mind as we plan our activities, enrich our learning environments, and set our expectations for how our children will engage with the world around them. It’s also helpful for those of us who have children in public school to be aware of how much time they’re expected to spend on a task or subject and advocate for their needs. .Now Does this mean they can’t or won’t engage with one activity for longer than that? Of course not. . **And, this is where it gets interesting** . What we find is that when children are the ones who choose the way they’re engaging, the attention span and focus lasts longer than if it is an adult-driven activity or task. .Pretty cool, right?So . Create as many child-led opportunities as possible related to your child’s interests Set up an engaging learning environment that encourages your child to play and create and choose their own daily adventures Acknowledge where your own expectations are and if they match the needs of your child Allow your child to move their bodies while doing things like read-alouds to keep their attention in motion Keep in mind that the beginnings and ends of those attention spans are when your child is most alert - use those opportunities for engagement ? / - - ?
