25.01.2022 One room, 3 styles If you're one of those people who get bored with their house quickly and often (my mother and sister are definitely coming to mind), rather than wallow in that boredom or go crazy with a full make over, a quick, easy and cheap way to give a bit of zing to a room is to change the cushions and lamps. Here are three quick changes that took Melissa 5 minutes to create. Happy styling ...
24.01.2022 There are so many interior styles, that it’s hard to know where to start. So each week Melissa & I will add a new one for you to consider. First cab off the rank is Minimalism. Minimalist architecture became popular in the late 1980s in London & New York, where designers worked achieved simplicity using white elements, cold white or blue lighting, large spaces with minimum objects and furniture. Main characteristics of the minimalist interior design style are... Cool colours and white or blue lighting Large open spaces with minimum furniture, essentials only Reduced to ideal quantity Storage is key to maintaining minimalism Natural light used as a feature
23.01.2022 This next interior decorating style reminds me of my much loved Agatha Christie Poirot movies ... ART DECO STYLE The Art Deco style was developed following World War I, with the excitement and optimism of post-war Europe and America forming the basis for this glamorous and elegant style of design. Art Deco furniture is streamlined in design, and is modern and sleek while still remaining comfortable. ... Many designs of furniture use industrial materials such as a bent chrome base that gives the piece a rocking effect. Wood pieces are highly lacquered in black, with woods used including exotic Brazilian rosewood, ebony, birds-eye maple, and light maple veneers. Upholstery is usually velour, making the rigid structural shape more comfortable. Colours are used sparingly, with most schemes including black combined with another colour such as green, red or white while accent colours are usually chrome and/or gold. Pale blue or dove-grey were also commonly used to provide a softening effect against the harsh black. Art Deco lighting is extensive including ceiling lights, floor lamps, table lamps and wall lamps. Floor lamps include tall torches in wrought iron or chrome with hand blown glass shades. Table lamps of bright nickel with white, clear, frosted, or colourful glass shades are common. Wall lamps can be bronze, aluminium, steel, or silver plated base metal with opaque white or colourful glass shades. Surfaces in the Art Deco style are generally sleek and clean, so as to contrast the more decorative and ornate objects and furniture within the space. Mirrors made of nickel, chrome, or silver are decorated with motifs of deer, peacocks, roses, and geometric shapes. Bronze sculptures are sleek and covered with coloured or pearl beads. Door handles and candlesticks moulded of nickel, chrome, or silver often have chevron shapes. Frosted glass or black and white marble are used for vases, and inlay is common, adding colour and design. The main characteristics of the art deco style are Glamorous and elegant style Industrial metals and lacquered wood Black as a main or background colour Numerous light sources used Bold, colourful patterns Intentionally, overly decorative

19.01.2022 There are three things that I stress over when purchasing for myself - rugs, mattresses and sofas. Rugs because I have two dogs and they are renowned for running in the horse paddock and then rolling all over my lovely flooring; mattresses because it's like playing roulette or blackjack as to whether it will suit you once you get it home; and sofas because there are just too many gorgeous choices. I've no doubt that there are others in this boat, so thought that this article from the Temple & Webster site might help you ...

11.01.2022 SHABBY CHIC Apart from my business partner Melissa, I have two style icons India Hicks and Rachel Ashwell (and one definite style crush, Darren Palmer!). India typifies the lifestyle that we were seeking for our move to the Noosa area, and Rachel epitomizes all things relaxation and pretty. So let’s make our next design style Shabby Chic.... Shabby Chic interior design is all about a soft, feminine feel that differentiates this look from other vintage styles. It is a uniquely romantic way of decorating that first originated in the 1980’s in the UK, and made popular by designer Rachel Ashwell when she relocated to America and trademarked Shabby Chic as her business name in 1989. Shabby Chic interior design consists of furnishings that are either chosen for their appearance of age and signs of wear and tear, or where new items are distressed to achieve the appearance of an antique. The style is imitated in faux painting using glaze or by painting then rubbing and sanding away the top coat to show the wood or base coats, known as "distressing" the finish of the furniture. Elaborate furniture appliques depicting flower swags and garlands, cherubs, and other motifs are often added. Fabrics tend to be cottons and linens, with linen being particularly popular, inspired by old French linens. Pure whites, as well as ecrus and worn or bleached out pastel colors are favorites. Fabric is often stained with tea to give it the look of old fabric. Vintage floral patterns with pastel colors, cotton ticking patterns, or linen in earth tones, are all typical of shabby chic style. Antique pieces such as pie safes and jelly cupboards are popular in shabby chic décor. Besides white, the shabby chic style of décor items also includes soft neutral colors such as sky blue, rose pink and beige tones. Hints from French-style interior design often show in shabby chic homes such as Rococo-style lighting fixtures, furniture or wall paneling. The shabby chic aesthetic also expands to the garden, with the same design principles of using timeworn garden furniture and feminine accessories. Rose gardens are popular with the shabby chic style of decor. It is a soft, relaxed, feminine, romantic style of decorating that looks comfortable and inviting. + Shabby Chic furniture mixes old flea market finds with new items and reveals distressed or worn-out areas under modern coats of paint + Fabrics tend to be cottons and old French linens. Whites and pastels are favourite colours. + Popular décor items are pillows made of vintage fabrics, vintage linens, chenille bedspreads, vintage chandeliers, and anything with roses on it

COASTAL STYLE If you’re fortunate enough to live near the coast, you’ll understand and appreciate the beauty, freshness and light that the colours and atmosphere of this area bring this sense of freedom and beauty is why a coastal holiday is so popular. Even living in the city or country however, it is possible to bring a c...Continue reading
07.01.2022 It's time for interior style number 3 ... URBAN/INDUSTRIAL STYLE Urban/Industrial interiors feature non-traditional home materials & design features, often including objects that are more traditionally used in an industrial sense - galvanized steel, concrete floors, metal siding, exposed beams & unfinished surfaces. In more upscale urban interiors, the look is far more polished, with bespoke (custom made) fixtures, sophisticated finishes & clever small space solutions, such a...s open floor plans that allow for multifunctional rooms. This concept is often blended with minimalism, therefore there is not a lot of furniture or accessories on show. The colour palette steers clear of bright, bold colour, instead it uses warm, neutral tones. Shades & tones of grey work really well, mixed up with white to add a crisp, clean look. The best thing about the industrial interior design style is that the look can be achieved on a budget. Old industrial looking objects that are made from steel, metal or wood are ideal, particularly if they are worn down or have been salvaged and recycled. The main characteristics of the urban interior design style are Use of industrial materials eg concrete, steel, brickwork Exposed structural materials used as a feature Unique (non-functional) objects used as features Aims to create open space Often seen in converted buildings Great storage Clutter free Neutral colour palette

06.01.2022 Hi guys, it's time for our 5th Interior Design Style. Other than Hamptons, French Country is my fave: COUNTRY STYLE Country style interior design is cosy, similar to a cottage style, just not quite so overly pretty.... There are many culturally different country style designs such as French country, English country, American country, Italian country or Tuscan, and Modern country. Each type of country style has taken characteristics from the culture it was used in. Open space is not considered important in the country style with large furniture pieces often dominating a space with the walls decorated with a variety of pictures, utensils or other objects. English country is relaxed & comfortable, incorporating many floral patterns as well as stripes and plaids. Natural light wood, such as oak, is used throughout the English country style. French country style is characterized by deep & bright colours - aubergine/purple, lavender, yellow, azure blue - with these colours featuring strongly in floral and animal patterns. The furniture is robust & basic. An important element in French Country style decorating is the use of natural materials. Rough stained or painted plaster walls, large beamed ceilings & walls, delicate carved wood details, & chair seats woven of rush give texture & simplicity to the look. Natural stone floors are covered with wool or cotton rugs. No real French Country home is complete without a stone fireplace. A heavy beam at the top of the opening serves as a mantle. Tiles, either stone or ceramic, form the border. The hearth is clay or brick, & herbs, copper pots, & iron accessories usually hang on the side walls. Italian country style, also known as Tuscan, is warm and rustic. It incorporates such colours as ochre, terracotta, golden yellow, & green. The flooring & fireplaces are made of natural stone. Unfinished wooden pieces & textured walls accentuate the rustic feel. American country style has its main feature in simplicity. Unpretentious & welcoming, it harks back to the early days of the USA, drawn from farming traditions, indigenous materials, & an emphasis on handmade furnishings & textiles. Modern country style has an updated look. Incorporating modern art, furniture or lighting into the traditional design, makes it more up to date but still cosy & lived-in. The main characteristics of the country interior design style are Cosy & comfortable but sometimes cluttered Traditional to the context, eg French Country, American Country etc Natural & floral patterns used with plaids and stripes Robust, bulky furniture Rough finishes on materials

05.01.2022 So, we're now up to interior design style number 4 ... RETRO STYLE Every few decades, old designs seem to make a comeback, but with a modern twist. This is referred to as the Retro style - an eclectic mix of old styles with new looks, functions, and forms with old materials and finishes. ... The 1950s & 60s saw a move towards brighter and bolder colours probably to forget the doom and gloom of the war torn 1940s. These days, Retro interior designs can be described as taking a little bit of these old features and bringing them back into the present in order to create a new style of interior design that is both modern and fun and definitely funky! As there is so much to choose from past styles, what you decide to include will come down to your own interpretation of the past, so will be unique and individual. During each of the past few decades there have been different materials, shapes, colours, objects, and gadgets that have left a lasting impression, some of which may be meaningful from your childhood so may be more suited to your personal Retro style. Nowadays, anything from the 50's, 60's and 70's is fashionable again. The key identifying feature is that you're taking an old style and giving it a modern twist. The main characteristics of the retro interior design style are Rehashing of existing designs Eclectic mix of materials Classic objects used Can be difficult to recognise as it comes down to your own interpretation Old is new again
05.01.2022 The next in our series of styles ... MODERN STYLE The modern interior design style is credited to a group of European designers that started the Bauhaus School of Design in Germany in 1919. The Bauhaus philosophy is that form & function should combine in all designs. Modern Style design is clean-lined & focuses first & foremost on function & avoids the excessive accessories & decorative elements seen in many other styles. ... The modern style is ideal for apartments & small spaces as it maximizes space & creates the impression that a room is larger than it actually is. Minimal textures & bold geometric forms, neutral colours accented with a single bold colour, along with polished finishes and asymmetrical balance are key identifying features of modern style interiors. The main characteristics of the modern interior design style are Clean lined design Function before form Avoids excessive accessories & decorations Minimal use of textures Asymmetrical balance in furniture & layout
