22.01.2022 Great news: thanks to all of your advocacy, and the fierce opposition of many champions in Parliament this week, the government did not put the mobile phones ba...n bill up for debate in the Senate today - delaying it until October at the earliest. The government only puts bills to a vote if they know they have the numbers. They will not vote on a bill knowing they will lose. So, every day it is not listed is a day we know they don't have the numbers. Over 154,340 of you signed a petition to call on Parliament to oppose the bill. And your voice has been heard. Our deepest thanks to these great allies in Parliament, who stood with the community to oppose this dangerous bill (clockwise form top left: Adam Bandt MP, Peter Khalil MP, Ged Kearney MP, Senator Murray Watt, Zali Stegall MP, Andrew Giles MP, Helen Haines MP, Rebecca Sharkie MP& Senator Stirling Griff, Senator Nick McKim, Terri Butler MP, Andrew Wilkie MP).

19.01.2022 Arrest and detention in Police custody for public drunkenness should be abolished in NSW, as it is in WA (for example) and the duty of care of authorities who detain individuals should be enforced.

19.01.2022 Phones are a lifeline to people in immigration detention #NoPhoneNoLife

15.01.2022 Our detention casework team are on the phones all day, every day, supporting people in indefinite detention. They are a lifeline for people the government is tr...ying to crush. Without phones, people in detention can't get that critical support. But now Dutton is pushing a bill to give himself the power to confiscate them. Don't let Dutton take away their phones. Sign the petition: https://action.asrc.org.au/phones-are-a-lifeline

01.01.2022 The next of our COVID-special articles is now available OnlineFirst and open access. Nina Boughey's "Executive power in emergencies: Where is the accountability...?" looks at how the powers Australian governments have relied on to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic have avoided many of the political, legal and administrative accountability mechanisms that ordinarily apply to government decision-making. Are these accountability limits justified? Should we be concerned? https://journals.sagepub.com//full/10.1177/1037969X20950514

01.01.2022 Today we share Professor Kate Auty's Opinion in our next Journal where she considers life and law in a pandemic, and explains what's special about the articles ...in our COVID issue. Most memorable line for me? "For those who are complaining about the impact of border closures or mask directions on their constitutional rights, [Evans and Petrie's] essay might prove a revelation."
