25.01.2022 Tokyo dreams for Japanese Finn Sailor Today was a historic step for Japanese Finn Sailing as Hajime Kokumai began his Tokyo 2020 Journey. Hajime became the fir...st Japanese Finn sailor to grace the waters of Sydney Harbour as he made his first training splash with his new Finn. Hajime will compete and test some new equipment in the Finn East Coast Champs at Woollahra Sailing Club this weekend as part of his initial training block. Hajime is one three Japanese sailors exploring the Finn as we see lots of interest emerging across Oceania and Asia. NB Sailsports and the International Finn Association is pleased to the Japanese Finn resurgence. Hajime has been a 420, Laser, Flying Junior and Youth Americas Cup background. This really proves the value of the #Powerdinghy pathway, as Alex at 93kgs realises the Finn is his only competitive Olympic option. We note and respect Hajimes assistance and support from #OptecJapan Corporation. This is a very exciting moment for the class and our coaching efforts. Hajime plans to work toward participating in #Hempel World Sailing Championships in Aarhus later this year as part of his preparation for the first of his Olympic trials at Enoshima Olympic week this year. As hosts, Japan have a spot allocated in the 2020 games, so the focus is to be the No1 Japanese Sailor. 17.01.2022 this weekend at RBYC are the Finn Victorian State Champs
16.01.2022 Victorian Finn State Championships 17-18 Feb 2018 report by Mark Jackson. It’s an old cliché that sometimes sport is won and lost by a matter of inches. Well th...e Victorian Finn Championships held over the weekend was a great example. 10 local Finn’s contested the event hosted by Royal Brighton Yacht Club and run in conjunction with the George McCallum Regatta on Port Phillip Bay. The forecast for the weekend was light with a building sea breeze for both days and the fleet was held ashore Saturday to allow the breeze to move from a light northerly around to the southerly sea breeze direction. After a further wait on water, the fleet got away in 8 to 10 knots from the South. The race saw two persistent shifts to the left on each upwind and Jake Gunther sailed away for a clear win from Mark Jackson second and Gary Lokum third. The second race saw the breeze soften and fail to stabilise, making the oscillations unpredictable with some very light patches. Craig Ginnivan showed excellent speed and tactics to take the win from Bill Hodder. The third and final race of the day had the sea breeze settle and fill in between 12 to 14 knots and was sailed without Oscar flying. Mark Jackson took the win from Stuart Skeggs, showing excellent moderate air speed and Craig Ginnivan. Day two started out with a complete glass out across Port Phillip. The fleet was again held on shore, but was sent out only half an hour after the scheduled start time to wait for the sea breeze to fill in. Race 4 was sailed in 6 to 8 knots from the South. Bill Hodder led the fleet and crossed the line first only to retire due to a mark room incident at the second windward mark, the first of several incredibly tight mark rounds throughout the day. Mark Jackson snuck through to leeward of Jake Gunther on the reach to the finish to cross the line second by less than a metre. Official were places Mark Jackson first, Jake Gunther second and Craig Ginnivan third. Race 5 was sailed in 8 to 12 knots with a now building sea breeze. The racing was very tight with Mark Jackson and Jake Gunther crossing gybes on the last down wind, when Jake failed to advise Mark he was sailing to the wrong leeward mark. In Jakes words, I was going to tell you, but I couldn’t find my phone. To which the reply was, Funny that. I didn’t have any missed calls! Jake Gunther first, Stuart Skeggs second and Craig Ginnivan third. With one or two races to go, any of the top three could win. Race 6 got underway under Oscar in 12 to 15 knots. Gary Lokum, Jake Gunther and Mark Jackson were all very close, with Jake sailing very fast across the top of the trapezoid to get the inside overlap on two RS Quests sailing three up. Mark was forced wide creating a big split on the last downwind. Jake had the inside overlap again at the leeward mark and on the last wave to the finish, Mark sailed to leeward and stole the win by inches from Jake with Gary Lokum in third. The final race of the regatta was again sailed under Oscar in a steady 15 to 18 knots. Mark Jackson kept a loose cover on Jake Gunther and rounded the windward mark in front and was able to cover the fleet to win from a fast finishing Stuart Skeggs enjoying the stronger breeze with Jake Gunther crossing the line in third. Overall an amazingly close regatta, with all boats being within less than a minute in all races and places being decided literally by inches! With racing so close, there was bound to be a word or two spoken, but all issues were quickly resolved over a number of cold jugs of Carton Draught on the club deck. In fact the jugs were being enjoyed so much we missed the presentation being held upstairs! See more
