12.01.2022 Hi, we are Ayu and Daru from Indonesia We are part of Emerging Water Professionals of International RiverFoundation. In 2020 we have the initiative to capture ...and share about the condition of water management and/or the livelihood around it from our country during the COVID-19 situation. We will share our story first. In Indonesia, the current river condition is deteriorating due to the increase in plastic waste. It happened in many cities and regions in Indonesia, such as Jakarta, Malang, Serang, Cilacap, and Tegal. During COVID-19, people are obliged to stay at home and this has caused a domino effect of the rise in food delivery, takeaways, and e-commerce purchase, which requires many plastic usages. Moreover, the use of medical masks and antibacterial wipes has become a new norm in this situation. You can read about it here https://www.kompas.com//studi--jumlah-sampah-plastik-menin There are some additional challenges, such as the inadequacy of solid waste management in Indonesia. It only covers 30% of all the waste produced daily, especially in suburban and rural areas. This condition has forced the communities to burn the garbage or throw their garbage in the river. Furthermore, most government agencies have to relocate part of their budget to accelerate COVID-19 response in Indonesia, including Environmental Agency with its solid waste management budget. In response, waste management becomes abandoned, which in turn, worsens the situation in the field. And unfortunately, no one has done anything about the situation because everyone is still focusing on the pandemic. However, there is an opportunity such as local regulations to ban the use of single-use plastic bag in the retail and modern market. Regions such as Jakarta, through Governor Regulation No. 142/2019, and Bali, through Provincial Regulation No. 97/2018, have implemented it. These regulations have reduced the use of plastic in the society, although it has not reached traditional and small-scale vendors. It will need a continuing public campaign both to the private sector and communities about the long-term effect of plastic to make the change sustainable. We propose a zero-waste lifestyle as a way to help in solving the issue. It is possible in this pandemic situation to maintain personal and environmental hygiene while using reusables, such as cloth mask, personal lunch box, and tumbler. Moreover, when the pandemic has started to ease, the Government will need to gradually increase the funding for waste management that has been sidetracked. Law enforcement such as giving sanction to anyone who still provides plastic packaging and routine river patrol has to be strictly implemented too. The private sector, as the biggest plastic producer, also needs to be committed to safe waste management and support the government program by providing alternate to single-use plastic packaging. Please share us your thought about our solution or suggest your own in the comment below. And we would really like to hear about the experience in your country! Please kindly share this post so that more and more people can participate. Your voice will reach the international river experts and authorities at the International Riversymposium2020, which will be held in 10 13 November 2020. Thank you and stay safe! #stopplasticpollution #refusesingleuse #reduceplastic #GoForZeroWaste #InternationalRiverSymposium #internationalriverfoundation
10.01.2022 We are now only a month away from this year’s International Riversymposium and we're delighted to announce our first keynote speaker! Philip Weller will be cove...ring the political value of our rivers. The world’s rivers are one of the most damaged and abused ecosystems - losing their natural values and resilience to service human endeavours and activities. In recent decades however, with new understanding and knowledge of our rivers, a political movement that is changing how we look at these valuable assets has been gaining strength and momentum. For bio and more info on Philip's talk, check out the draft Riversymposium program here https://irs.delegateconnect.co/x/program?alias=program&day=2
