23.01.2022 Last week, for White Ribbon Day, Brooke Vitnell - Solicitor, a solicitor and community leaders from the Port Stephens area, joined @iInterrelate and The Smith Family Communities for Children (Raymond Terrace and Karuah) for a forum on domestic and family violence. Brooke shared views on Domestic and Family Violence (DFV). DFV is a critical issue that affects all ages, races, genders and sexualities. In the Raymond Terrace Community, there’s been a 60% increase in DFV. Lockd...own and increased social isolation due to COVID-19 has resulted in an environment where it is easier for perpetrators to gain control over their victims. Brooke also talks about smartwatch technology and how it can better protect people in the community. Last week, the NSW government reformed legislation which offers protection to companion animals and pets experiencing DFV situations. Perpetrators of violence will face DFV offences, even if their actions are only towards companion animals and pets. Watch the video to learn more about these topics!

23.01.2022 "I talk to myself in the shower all the time. I think it is a way of being in tune with myself. If I feel like I’m not ok, I name it. I might say to my partner - "I’m just agitated today, I don’t know why. Naming it helps shift the feeling or at least it makes me laugh. I work with a lot of people whose minds are always busy. They have difficulty being present. It reminds me of a book I once read: Mindful monkey, happy panda. The monkey was always jumping from one task to another; his mind was always somewhere else. But the panda would give his full attention to whatever he was doing. I think it is a good illustration of how we can distract ourselves from what’s in front of us." Can you relate to Hayley's story? 22.01.2022 For White Ribbon Day, Ranald Urquhart, Crime Manager for the Port Stephens and Hunter Police District, NSW Police Force joined Interrelate and The Smith Family Communities for Children (Raymond Terrace and Karuah) for a forum on domestic and family violence. Ranald gives valuable insight on the police perspective of Domestic and Family Violence, specifically how repots and charges of DFV are the responsibility of the police to charge, the importance of reporting suspected cases of DFV and strongly pushing for the perpetrators of DFV to take responsibility for their actions. It's never the fault of the victim of DFV.

09.01.2022 In recognition of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence, Interrelate's Greater Sydney and Central Coast ran a workshop amongst staff to discuss ways that Interrelate can further support some of the major issues that Australians are dealing with regarding Gender Based Violence. The four topics discussed and presented in small groups were: Impact of DFV on families who experience violence... Impact of DFV on the wider community Impact of DFV on staff who work with families The Value of Men taking a visible stand against DFV The teams were prompted to push for what additional actions we as an organisation can do. In our service offerings, our practitioners often have to deal with clients impacted by DFV, so we have some understanding of how violent relationships can impact a person's life, even if they're not the primary victim. It is our aim to ensure that all people struggling with DFV have access to care, and we encourage anyone surrounding this field to practice self-care strategies.

01.01.2022 Today is Day 7 of the #16days of Activism against Gender-based violence. Our Central Coast and Greater Sydney team held a practice discussion to acknowledge the work of White Ribbon Day which addresses men's use of violence in family relationships. The team discussed the value of men taking a visible stand against Domestic and Family Violence being an important step in ending gender-based violence, as well as the impact of violence on families, communities and individuals. T...he work we do with clients experiencing violence in their intimate relationships can also have an impact on us as professionals. Whilst we continue to take a stand against gender-based violence, this week also serves as a reminder that practicing selfcare enables us to be the best practitioners we can be for our clients. #16days #EndGBV #EndDFV
