02.01.2022 This was an email sent around by the Swim Australia President and i quite liked it - thought was worth sharing if you've got the time. A little bit of an intro into the Aussie Trials Coming Up! I particularly love the quote / description of the trials / games from Aussie Head Coach Jacco re: tip of the iceberg!... We are entering a penultimate time for so many as we approach the Hancock Prospecting Australian Swimming Championships and Olympic and Paralympic selection trial...s. By definition, the Championships are designed to be ‘sudden death’. Hit the wall and look up. Until a better selection process is designed, this is what we do. Years of preparation, dedication by athletes, coaches, parents, support teams, sports scientists, all to find that extra 1%. It's all on the line. To make the team and to become world's best at the greatest sports events in the worldthe Olympic and Paralympic Games. Rio is now just 5 months away. Everyone knows that. So why am I stating the bleeding obvious? Because each and every one of us in my opinion need to reflect on why you are doing this. Is it the love of the sport? Is it the thrill of competition, or to prove to one self that yes, I can do this? In most cases combinations of all these elements. Certainly love of sport is the starting point. Is this life and death? No. But it is a big deal to those involved. In many cases, a life long dream to be selected and represent one's country. And as Jacco says, these projects are like icebergseveryone can see above that waterline, but what’s down below is massive. So many people involved. So much dedication, time, commitment and hard work. So I applaud the dedication of so many people who will be represented at these championships. Both Olympic and Paralympic disciplines. Yes, to the swimmers themselves but also below that waterline. And for our Open Water swimmers, Simon Huitenga, Jarrod Poort, Chelsea Gubecka and Kareena Lee who are off to Portugal for final selection on June 11th, this is a critical stage for you also and this is your time. Channel 7 will be broadcasting the 8 days of competition in Adelaide April 7th-14th, LIVE and Prime time. The Paralympic team will be announced on the 13th with the Olympic team to be announced on the evening of Thursday 14th. This is a big deal for the Seven Network, the host broadcaster for the Rio Olympics and Paralympics. I wish the very best of luck to all involved. Win or lose, the key is to give it your best. Let your talents flow. Go Australia! John Bertrand AM President Swimming Australia
