24.01.2022 "Inverloch was their choice" from Wonthaggi Express 23 Dec 1953. Seven years ago (1946), because of the difficulty mothers with families experienced in obtaining holiday accommodation, the members of the Gippsland Hills group of the Country Women’s Association decided to establish a holiday home of their own. Several properties were inspected with that end in view.... Eventually Windy-ridge, in The Crescent, Inverloch, then owned by Miss Cappi, was purchased. On Nov. 13, 1948, at a gay Garden Party held in the extensive grounds, the Home was Officially declared open by the then State President (Mrs.Welsh), who came from Melbourne for the occasion. Control of the venture was vested in three trustees, Mesdames Aberdeen,Cooper and Hughes. Each Group President, on taking office, automatically becomes President of the executive committee. Each branch in the Group is represented by two delegates. Old World in Style: The Home, which commands a magnificent view of the Inlet, was built in the early days, and its high-pitched roof and gables, with their suggestion of a bygone leisurely era, convey to an onlooker the promise of a serene and enjoyable holiday. It is now divided into two self-contained flats, with bright airy rooms, comfortably furnished, with all conveniences. Guests from Darwin!: Members of the Gippsland Hills Group have first preference, but now that the home is becoming so : well known, members from the Wimmera and Mallee, and even the Riverina, NSW, and Darwin, NT, use it! The property is unencumbered, and improvements are constantly being made under the watchful eyes of its energetic local Secretary, Mrs. Beard, of the Wonthaggi Branch. Members feel that, not only do they possess a valuable asset in real estate, but they are successfully carrying out their aim to provide, at reasonable cost, a holiday not easily obtainable elsewhere.

24.01.2022 Help wanted. Do you have any photos of the boat 'Vida H' (shown here with its skipper Darrell Robertson) used for Commercial Fishing from Anderson Inlet around 1985-1990. Please let us know.

21.01.2022 "Beached for repairs , ‘Ripple 2’ Inverloch." Following Ripple1 (built 1949), Ripple2 was built in Inverloch 1959 by Bill Young & his son Bob under their shed at the bottom of Abbott Street. Then with the help of a crawler tractor and many of the locals, taken across the road into Anderson Inlet. Ripple2 was fishing well into the 1980’s There was an earlier Ripple unrelated to the Youngs built in the UK that did some service around South Gippsland & Inverloch in its later days. So it can get confusing!

19.01.2022 Amazon Shipwreck @ Inverloch: The team at the Amazon 1863 Project have achieved so much in such a short time. Their mission is the preservation of significant Amazon artefacts, the site & written records. To educate & share the history of this amazing ship. They have a very active group on Facebook @amazon1863project & just launched their website. http://amazon1863.org.au Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/amazon1863project

19.01.2022 Shack Bay (on the Bunurong Coast between Inverloch & Cape Paterson west of Eagles Nest) - Ever wondered why it has that name? Look closely at these photos taken around 1940-50s. In 1934, during the 5 month long Wonthaggi Coal Strike, the miners had plenty of time on their hands & this was the result. Clearly no building regulation roadblocks during this period. They were removed in 1977. (Photo credit to Jenny Graham who's uncle took them whilst on a fishing trip.)

12.01.2022 In January 1916, the Leongatha newspaper "The Great Southern Star", gave the following report of the 'Inverloch Foreshore Improvement Committee': ".the question of giving attention to the silting up of the bathing enclosure was discussed. Various means were mentioned with a view of getting rid of the accumulation of sand, and it was decided that a working bee be held on Thursday next at 2pm to effect the desired improvement. It was pointed out that if something were not done... at once, the bathing enclosure would soon be useless." "The Committee have done excellent work on the foreshore during the past year or two, for they have provided commodious dressing rooms for bathers, carried out sheet piling near the jetty, and placed seats at different portions (!) of the beach for the convenience of the public." "They deserve the thanks of all pleasure seekers at the district's seaside resort for work done in the past, and any money subscribed in future will be expended to advantage, which will be a means of attracting a greater influx of visitors from the city who now frequent the seaside near Melbourne. Inverloch can now hold its own with the fashionable places at Hobson's Bay and at the Heads, and only requires to be advertised to draw its quota of pleasure-seekers from the metropolis and inland towns in the hot months of the year."

10.01.2022 As we know, Inverloch's coast has long been subject to shifting sands and tidal waters. Here is an image from 1956 showing the Purvis family's bathing box tethered with a rope at the Abbott St beach in an attempt to prevent it from being washed out to sea.

09.01.2022 Such a great photo - the Henderson family (possibly three generations) haymaking at their Pound Creek selection in the early 1900s

08.01.2022 Pictured here is the Purvis family's bathing box at the Abbott St beach in its 1930s heyday. See our previous post showing the same bathing box in dire circumstances in 1956.

07.01.2022 Bill Young's boat 'Irene' on Anderson Inlet c1930s. Irene was predecessor to the Young built versions of Ripple1 (1949) & Ripple2 (1959).

06.01.2022 We recently came across this book in the Society's historical collection. It was written in the 1960s by Enid Gilchrist from Melbourne. While it is no longer in print, copies of vintage editions of her books are offered for sale in many countries. Enid published a series of these pattern books at a time when there were fewer labour-saving appliances and life was a little slower. The book is still in copyright but we have reproduced a couple of pages to illustrate Enid's work.

04.01.2022 Ok Inverloch history buffs, what can you tell us about these three images?

03.01.2022 We are looking for information on the 'Milk Bar' in the first image. We think it was located near the Glade on the current Inverloch Marine / Bunurong Environment Centre site. To the right of the 'Car For Hire' garage in the second image..

01.01.2022 Old butcher shop (Cnr A'Beckett & Reilly Sts). Was later converted into the Environment Centre, which itself was later relocated to its current spot near the Glade. Photos courtesy of Trilby Parise.

01.01.2022 Ketch 'Ripple' alongside Inverloch Pier 1890. The Ripple was the main supply line for the people of Inverloch & Tarwin Lower from Western Port Bay. The original image is from State Library Victoria, photographed by W.H.Ferguson on a half-plate glass negative.

01.01.2022 Drive-In Cinema at Inverloch? There was an Inverloch Drive-In which opened in the 1960’s. The drive-in was then demolished & is now factories and light industry. Possibly in Cashin Street with operation dates from September 1968 to the end of 1974 with a capacity of 182. We are interested in any further information & photos, including exact location & personal memories. (Image is only a generic drive-in example) Thanks for any information.
