Chamber Strings 2 & 3 have been combined to form a string super group called the Iona String Ensemble and String Quartet will now be on Friday mornings with Mrs Dedini. If you have any questions or concerns please get in touch with us at [email protected]

21.01.2022 Hi All! There is a Music Supporters Group meeting tonight in IPAC theater from 7pm. Everyone is welcome! For those who have never been, MSG are like a mini P&F for the Music Department. It's a great way for the department to connect with the parent body and as a group we are always looking for ways we can support our young musicians as a music community. The meetings typically finish under an hour and tonight we will be looking at ways to enhance the program in the age of Covid. All social distancing and hygiene measures will be adhered to.

18.01.2022 Mr Green and the mighty year 11s performing at lunch for the boys!

17.01.2022 Theres something deeply moving about the Salve Regina. I always look forward to hearing it sung at mass by both the Oblates and our most senior singers. Something about it says things will all be ok :) #kiakaha #ionastrong #blackandwhite #salveregina #oblates #latin #neverworryalone

17.01.2022 Year 5 concert band and Year 5 Strings did a lunch time concert the other day. So good to see our youngest Ionians getting amongst it!

16.01.2022 Nothing like a superhero theme song to help you wake up in the morning! Here's Guitar Ensemble 2 playing the Theme from Spiderman during their Wednesday morning rehearsal.

16.01.2022 Throw back to Music Camp 2020. #alwayslearning

14.01.2022 On Tuesday morning we videoed the Iona Singers at rehearsal working on a new song; Beyond by Vicki Tucker Courtney. The boys did a fantastic job considering they've only just starting working on it. We hope you enjoy it :)

14.01.2022 As we explore a few options for us to deliver instrumental lessons online please make sure your son has access to their instrumental lesson notebook in OneNote created by their instrumental teacher. We will set up some activities for them designed at getting students to interact with OneNote when their lesson would normally be during the day. We can then see who is online and who is able to complete the task and who is not. Students will also be expected to practise through the week as is normally expected. Thanks for everyones patience during this time. Heres a shot of us practicing social distance while still building community! Hows your social distancing going? Love from the instrumental team Note: any questions or concerns be sure to email them through to [email protected] rather than post them here.

13.01.2022 Hi families! We have a real treat for you this term. Considering concerts look unlikely for the near future we will be taking the time to video our ensembles during their weekly rehearsals. Once done we will email the clip to families. Youll be able to see just how hard your sons have been working. Tomorrow youll see our first one! When the going gets tough...play music! Or do the next best things...listen to it! Its powerful stuff.

13.01.2022 The holidays is usually the time many of us as teachers return to the world of performing and composing. First cab off the rank is Ms Madonna Forster and her community choir the TCS singers. As the flyer mentions there will be sacred, folk and contemporary music with special guests the Jacaranda Guitar Quartet. I believe Mrs Madison Dedini will also make an appearance on percussion! All ages welcome. Follow the links below to reserve tickets.

12.01.2022 MUSIC CONCERT CANCELLED - Following discussion with the Iona Leadership Team we have decided to cancel tomorrow night's concert. We were all looking forward to it however, health and safety in the current climate is paramount. An email has been sent to families involved.

12.01.2022 As per Mr Goodwins email to all parents yesterday ALL ensemble rehearsals before and after school are cancelled until further notice. Instrumental lessons continue as per usual. We will be sending home information regarding some procedures put in place to ensure good hygiene at this time. 11.01.2022 I love this! A great demonstration of how powerful music is for the brain and for the heart.

11.01.2022 Hi everyone. All boys are expected to practice their instrument throughout the week so make sure they blow the dust off it and get cracking! We are working towards delivering online 'face to face' lessons via Microsoft Teams starting next week. There are still a few issues to solve but we expect these to be resolved soon. Stay tuned for more info and please pass this message on to those who you think will need to see it. I hope everyone survived their first day of At Home Learning!

11.01.2022 Hi All, Check out Big Band 1 playing some sweet Latin Jazz last week at rehearsal! Turn up the volume and make sure you're 1.5 meters apart when dancing!

10.01.2022 Strap yourself into that favourite armchair of yours because this is a big one! It's Guitar Ensemble 1 playing the Life's a Beach Suite by Paul Svoboda. The suite was written in 2005 and comprises of 3 pieces. Each one represents a North Queensland beach. Try and imagine jogging along beach in the morning before the rain clouds appear. Or watching hang gliders sail through the air nearby. Enjoy your weekend :)

10.01.2022 STOP PRESS!! SOME ENSEMBLES START NEXT WEEK! . . Due to the changing nature of Covid-19 guidelines we will now have the opportunity to start some of our ensembles NEXT WEEK! 07.01.2022 How we conduct while in isolation...

06.01.2022 Were shooting Iona Music Department the Motion Picture today. More info coming soon...

06.01.2022 Thanks to the Year 11 musicians and Mr Gary Green for organising yet another great lunchtime concert. Here's a few snaps from the event!

05.01.2022 Also known as the Ballad of John Henry, This Old Hammer tells the story of an African American folk hero. It is said he once raced a steam-powered rock drilling machine with only a hammer and won. Artisits who have told the story of John Henry through song include Johnny Cash, Led Belly, Woodie Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, Steve Earle, Jerry Lee Lewis and now...Ionian Voices! Enjoy.

05.01.2022 We are sad this evening at the news, Old Boy Zach Robba has passed away, and send our love to Zach's family and friends. We remember Zach as an enthusiastic musician who loved music, loved percussion and had an infectious smile.

04.01.2022 Next ensemble to be featured this term is Guitar Ensemble 3. All of these boys are in Year 6! It's hard to believe that some of them could not read music last year and some had hardly any experience on Guitar before that! and considering we had the Marian Mass last week it's only fitting we play a song with the following lyrics "When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be..."

04.01.2022 Don't forget to spend some time playing your instrument over the holidays! Here's our very own Chamber Strings 1 at rehearsal a few weeks ago playing Mantras. Enjoy :)

03.01.2022 Found a few old photos in the filing cabinets today. 10 points if you can guess where this is!

01.01.2022 The grassroots of jazz! Here is Big Band 2 performing the feel good hit of Spring - St Thomas. What was impressive is that it was a quick one take performance during lunch and they were even missing some key players. Well done lads.

01.01.2022 We have some great news! All Instrumental lessons will now be delivered by Fred, Herbie, Tilley, Radar, Peppi, Kandi and Trixie! All online and via Microsoft Teams. The dogs of the instrumental department are well trained and have been by our sides during lesson preparation! I asked Fred what grows on trees and he said Bark, Bark, Bark! Good dog. Some are a little tired though from all their preparation:) #alwayslearning
