24.01.2022 In last night's Bulldogs v Roosters game, Lachlan Lewis (2012) showed his deep love as an Ionian in reaching out to a family in grief. He is one very decent and special human being. Despite playing for the opposing teams, Old Boys Lachlan and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (2006) shared a photo together after the game. Kia Kaha!

21.01.2022 Did you know? That by 1961, the enrolment of the College had increased almost threefold from 67 students on its first day in 1958 to 193 students? If you were one of the students in this assembly photograph from 1961, it would be wonderful if you could write down your memories of the College then, including about the buildings, grounds and anything else that is significant for College Archives. Please contact the College Archivist, Mrs Rosemary Mammino on 3906 8941 or [email protected]. Thank you.

20.01.2022 - Old Boys' Day - Set in the new pavilion overlooking Harron Oval, we welcomed back many old boys to the Reunion Mass and Dinner last Saturday night. Many stories were shared over a meal and drink in a most pleasant atmosphere. Congratulations to old boys from the class of 1970 who celebrated their 50 years reunion and a special mention is given to the class of 1980 (40 years out) for their turn out. While it was wonderful to reconnect with many former students, we especially pray for and keep in our thoughts old boys and families interstate or at a distance who, through hardship or illness, could not join us on Saturday night.

16.01.2022 - Fr Donald Oswin Hughes OMI - It is with great sadness that the Australian Province of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate received the news of the passing of Fr Don Hughes OMI. Fr Don lived a full and active life as a faithful Oblate and generous Priest and up until recent months, even at the age of 87, had been present in the Mazenod College Western Australia Community supporting students and staff. Earlier this year he refused further aggressive treatment for his cancer, wh...ich he had battled with for many years. In his ministry as an Oblate, he was involved in Education, Formation and Parish ministry. Fr Don was an Oblate who generously responded to the needs of the Province. Born in Fremantle, WA on 23rd August 1932, and educated at CBC Fremantle. Intending to be a diocesan priest he studied philosophy at St Charles Seminary in Guilford WA, then joined the Oblates in 1953 at Sorrento. In 1954 he went to study theology at Piltown, Ireland where he was ordained on the 15th September 1957. His first obedience was 3 months at Holy Cross, Liverpool, UK before he returned to Australia, to Sorrento. In his first 2 years he was also at Penshurst NSW, Beaconsfield WA and Camberwell Vic. He taught at Iona College 1961-65, then went to Mazenod WA 1966-72 as first rector. Fr Don was then rector of St Mary’s Seminary until January 1976, when he moved to Massey New Zealand as parish priest until 1982, then Rosebud Vic for 14 months followed by Tea Tree Gully SA until the end of 1989. From 1990 to 1995 he was novice master then rector of St Mary’s Seminary for a second term, followed by 10 years of parish ministry in WA, at Fremantle then Lesmurdie. He was then Rector of St Charles Seminary (archdiocesan), Guildford WA for two and a half years, then had a year back as novice master at St Mary’s Seminary, Mulgrave. He joined the Mazenod College Community in Lesmurdie in 2011, where he has been since. There he loved watching sporting matches, was involved with the boys, and was seen as a witness of faith and reassuring presence and pastoral support to both students and staff. Fr Don was a generous Oblate, serving a number of terms on the Provincial Council, and was willing to go wherever he was asked, to do whatever was needed. He has been in all the Oblate ministries he has been missioner, parish priest, teacher, college and seminary rector, formator. He was passionately interested in the congregation: he has been the historian of the province and the keeper of the stories. Fr Don Hughes will be greatly missed.

16.01.2022 - In Hoc Signo - Term 2 has been an incredibly unique term. Our community is our strength and whatever obstacles have been in front of us, the power behind and within us has been even greater. Please enjoy the June edition of the In Hoc Signo publication. 16.01.2022 Did you know? That in 1993, the 15A tennis team were Premiers? The team was undefeated throughout the season with each member performing at a high standard each week. They played with determination and had some hard fought wins against strong opposition.

16.01.2022 Do you know? The name of the person, probably a member of staff, seen here leaning on the fence near the old Sports Pavilion looking across what is now McCarthy oval? This photo was taken in 1968 and shows the fence separating Davine oval from McCarthy oval. Long Block, which opened in 1959, is the building in the background. Can you please contact Rosemary Mammino if you know this person’s name? She will then add it to the catalogue record. Her contact details are E: [email protected] and T: 3906 8941. Thank you very much.

16.01.2022 Thank you to those in our community who have already posted some beautiful comments about Mike Gaffney and left condolences to his family. Mike is a true gentleman and a man of great integrity. Working with the Oblate community, he helped and served many students and families. He certainly did love his footy and swimming and connected with many families through his involvement in co-curricular sport. Mike loved teaching and loved Iona, often attending our Founders Day assemblies and staff reunions in recent years. Mike was anointed by Father Michael recently and has watched many of our morning masses which have been lived streamed in recent weeks from the College Chapel. Tomorrow Father Michael and myself will be joined by some fellow retired staff in representing the College at his funeral. Our blessings are with his family.

15.01.2022 Dear Ionians, Hope all families are well. As we prepare to commence Term 3, I’m asking if there may be Old Boys with a trade business who may be looking to employ a junior or start a new apprentice. We have a few students considering learning a trade - such as carpentry. I’m aware there are also local businesses who are happy to employ Iona Old Boys and perhaps there is a trade owner you know. ... If this is something you maybe considering or you know of a trade business that maybe able to assist, please contact me at Iona. Hope everyone also enjoyed the latest edition of our In Hoc Signo magazine which was sent out recently. I’ll continue to update everyone about the possibility of an Old Boys function later in the year. Kind regards Damian Courtney See more

10.01.2022 - Foundation Day Liturgy - Yesterday we welcomed back many retired staff, founding day students and special guests to celebrate Iona’s 63rd birthday at our Foundation Day Liturgy. The morning was celebrated with immense thanks and gratitude for our founding parents, families, staff and Oblates. Our keynote speaker was Mr Arend de Weger, graduate of 1965. Arend, his seven brothers and many relatives have been a part of our family for close to 60 years. Arend spoke passionately... about the dedication and service of the Oblate Priests and recalled many stories of his ‘Iona’ days. The theme for the liturgy was focused upon growth, with a special spotlight on the history of Iona’s buildings and how these structures become the classrooms and faith areas for the formation of our students.

07.01.2022 Dear Ionians, I hope all families are keeping well in these difficult times. I was very sad to hear that Wally Donovan (class of 71), died suddenly on Friday night. The Donovan family were wonderful supporters of the College during the 60s and early 70s. Our prayers are with Wally’s family; sons Joseph and Kris (Old Boy of 2000) and his daughter, Cassandra. Wally is 1 of 8 children, and while at Iona was a talented sportsman. He excelled in touch football after leaving schoo...l and was often seen walking the Wynnum Foreshores or supporting the Seagulls at Kougari. We extend our thoughts to his brothers and sisters. His 4 brothers are all Old Boys: Tim (class of 66), Chris (68), Stephen (70) and John (79). May Wally rest in eternal peace with his parents Stephen and Eileen. The family intends to have a memorial service later in the year. Sincere condolences Regards Damian Courtney (Dean of Community-Iona) See more
