23.01.2022 Macbook pro 15" & 17" 2011 with GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) failure. Symptoms include green screen, pink screen, thin vertical lines on screen, boot looping to name but a few. The 15 and 17 inch macbooks both have 2 GPU's, one is AMD and the other Intel. The AMD is the main one and it is this one that commonly fails. If it can be disabled and the Intel GPU made to to take its place the Mac will work almost as normal. The only difference is an external monitor will not work... and also the screen brightness will be fixed to a set level. The rerouting in the photo below wires the Intel GPU to the screen directly and at the same time the power supply to the AMD GPU is turned off by removing its power supply. This is quite a complicated and time consuming exercise but it does work and is very stable. There is another solution that is easier quicker that i will cover in another post. But it does prove that GPU failure in a Macbook is repairable. See more
