25.01.2022 Don Ellison 1934 to 2020 May he rest in peace #DonEllison author, propagator, exporter, plant hunter, speaker, seed specialist, lover of Frangipanis ... an hort...icultural world legend passed away yesterday from the effects of a massive stroke a few months ago. Don, a second generation horticulturist, was born February 1934 and has spent a lifetime working with plants... starting his entrepreneurial journey selling carnations at the age of 12. He has left a wonderful legacy for us all through his passion for plants and photography being available in his many fabulous published reference books ..... topics ranging from Camellias to palms. The one we were all awaiting was his upcoming frangipani book .... hopefully someone will take up the project? His fellow plant hunters AKA 'fellow obsessive horticultural travellers' will vouch for Don's thirst for plant knowledge and his desire to share with everyone. Condolences to Don's family and close friends, he will be missed. RIP in your new garden Don. See more

17.01.2022 Pythium and Phytophthora can cause huge losses - not only in the agricultural industry, but in your garden as well. Because of the differences between true fun...gal pathogens and oomycetes such as Pythium and Phytophthora, some of the antifungal agents dont work against them as well. Neutrog's Microbiologist, Dr Uwe Stroeher says there are a number of bacteria and beneficial fungi which help to control pathogens such as these. Here he chats to Graham Ross about how Whoflungdung can help. About Whoflungdung - a biologically activated, nutrient rich, weed free, absorbent super mulch, Whoflungdung is composted, inoculated with eNcase and filled with nutrients, so that when added to soil it introduces a wide diversity of beneficial bacteria. These beneficial bacteria readily proliferate through the soil, acting as a barrier/deterrent to pathogenic bacteria, providing a safe environment for healthy plant growth. Additionally, Whoflungdung is sustainable - it is a recycled waste product, made up of straw and wood shavings screened from chicken manure. In many instances Neutrog supplies the fertiliser that grows the crop from which the straw is sourcednow thats sustainability! Most significantly, Whoflungdung reduces, if not eliminates, the nitrogen draw-down which is often reflected in plants after mulch has been applied. Apart from reducing weeds, many users also happily report that blackbirds dont like it. www.neutrog.com.au

16.01.2022 Would you like to see an Australian grown label on flowers? Last week, we featured a story on how some local flower growers feel theyre at risk from big imp...orters. Theyve now come up with their own label, with more than 16 growers already using it on their packaging. Federal Agriculture Minister David Littleproud has written to the Federal Industry Minister asking for country-of-origin labelling to be made compulsory for imported flowers. 13.01.2022 Today is International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. The Bureau is working with communities that wish to record and share valuable seasonal and envir...onmental information and traditional knowledge. Did you know that JuneAugust is Barrgana (the cold season) in the seasonal calendar of the Yawuru people? They are the native title holders of land and sea in and around Broome, Western Australia. During Barrgana, it's usually dry, but winter rain can fall. Fog also occurs at this time, particularly at the beginning and end of the season. The dry wind blows strongly from the southeast, off the desert, and can bring dust storms. There's lots of seafood and fish traps are used to catch the now fat salmon and mullet. Dugongs were also hunted at this time of year. On the land, the possums, porcupine, wild cat, wallaby and kangaroo are all fat. Bunung and conkerberry are in fruit and there are many bush onion bulbs to eat. You can learn more at our Indigenous Weather Knowledge website: http://ow.ly/CLUA50AT8Ta

08.01.2022 Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden has been awarded a Level IV Accreditation by The ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program. Level IV is the highest level an...d Kirstenbosch is currently one of 30 gardens accredited at level IV out of 2037 worldwide. Mr Mpendulo Gabayi, Kirstenbosch horticulturist and tree expert responsible for the arboretum, took the ArbNet application project on in 2019. Mr Werner Voigt, Kirstenbosch Curator, concludes that having an ArbNet accreditation and membership gives Kirstenbosch access to a global network of tree-focused professionals and facilitates the collaboration of knowledge-sharing. We are thrilled and grateful to have been recognised as one of the botanical gardens in the world for upholding high standards in the curations of our tree collection. We believe that this paves the way for more progressive conservation and collaborative work on South African woody collections at Kirstenbosch. #Kirstenbosch #ArbNet #Arboretum #Conservation READ MORE HERE: https://www.sanbi.org//kirstenbosch-awarded-level-4-accre/ For further media queries and interview requests please email: [email protected]

06.01.2022 Throwback to Christmas Day 2012, when the stunning Titan Arum (Amorphophallus titanum), the largest flowering structure on earth, burst into flower in the Tropi...cal Glasshouse at Melbourne Gardens. Titan Arum is commonly referred to as corpse flower due to the stench of rotting meat it emanates to attract insect pollinators during its brief 48-hour flowering period. The seeds of Melbourne Garden's Titan Arum were collected in the wilds of Sumatra in the early nineties by David Attenborough, who was filming The Private Life of Plants at the time. Attenborough sent seeds to The Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney, who provided two small tubers to Melbourne Gardens.

05.01.2022 Scientists have reported the demonstration of a new, non-GMO technology to develop new crops at a fraction of the costs of traditional breeding. They engineer the genes of bacteria around target plants and claim the same outcome as adjusting genes from the plant itself.
