24.01.2022 The 157th graduating class of IGS had a wonderful evening at last night’s Valedictory dinner. The boys were presented with their Old Boy ties which were put on them for the first time by a significant person in their lives. This tradition is especially memorable for the Old Boys who were able to tie them for their sons who were about to join them in the Ipswich Grammar School Old Boys fraternity. #igsoldboys #class157

23.01.2022 From the Vault Friday | IGS Physics labs used the Wrights Patent Demand Indicator c1902 (thermal type) to measure the time integral of electric power or current. It was also used by students to determine the energy necessary to power a component or apparatus for a given period of time. The energy used by a circuit or component is the time integral of the electric power. Technology has come a long way and we are looking forward to the opening of our STEM building with innovative learning areas consisting of teaching spaces, laboratories, break out rooms and lecture theatre - all encased in a technology-rich environment.

18.01.2022 Vale Dr John Volep | The IGS Community was saddened to hear of the passing of Dr John Volep earlier this week. John spent the majority of his life teaching at Ipswich Grammar School from 1979 to 2013 and had a positive impact on many students during this time. One of his past students, Senator Paul Scarr, echoed these sentiments with the following comments made in the Senate chamber yesterday.... I was just informed that a history teacher of mine from my old school, Ipswich Grammar School, has passed awayDr John Volep. He was an outstanding history, English and German teacher. He put his heart and soul into teaching his students. In my first speech in this place, I talked about the significance and the importance of our early educators and I think Dr John Volep's family and friends should reflect on that legacy as they mourn his passing. John’s son Marton (Class of 2001) has welcomed anyone wishing to join the family for the service to do so via the link below tomorrow at 11am. The passcode is 6347. http://heritagebrothers.com.au/wp/service-recordings/

14.01.2022 Congratulations to Old Boy Kevin Walters (Class of 1984), on his appointment as Head Coach of the Brisbane Broncos. 14.01.2022 From the Vault Friday | In 1973, Sir Alan Fletcher opened the War Memorial Teaching Complex (the present Auditorium), which became known as the TC. Described as an impressive and unique structure, it was intended to be a flexible space, with removable partitions that allowed for a variety of uses, ranging from small areas for seminars, to a large area for assemblies and dramatic performances, and even facilities for indoor volleyball and basketball.... The rearrangement of the space was achieved with bi-fold doors that retracted back into wall cavities, and parts of the ceiling were able to be lowered and raised using a hydraulic pulley system. Acoustics were enhanced by the use of carpet panels on the ceiling! #igsoldboys

13.01.2022 From the Vault Friday | A strong sense of school spirit is frequently displayed at GPS sporting events and at various times throughout the school year, such as send-off assemblies before the occurrence of a GPS event. At these occasions, one of the school war cry’s called "War Cry Ipswich 1, 2, 3" is led by the seniors, who regard this as a particular highlight of their final school year. The origins of the war cry are unknown, but it was in existence in 1928 when it was printed in the school magazine for all newies to learn, with the instruction that readers will notice that it lends itself well to the production of a loud and continuous noise.

10.01.2022 Imagine the scene at Ipswich Grammar School on the morning of Wednesday 7 October 1863. Inside the schoolroom, the polished floors shone and the desks were unblemished by spilt ink. The blackboard had never been dusted of chalk and the open roll on the Headmaster’s lectern was unmarked. In the dormitory, the beds had never been slept in. The grounds had not yet echoed with the plunk of leather on wood and the school bell had never been rung. On that same morning, sixteen boy...s sat down at the hand-crafted wooden forms, opened their copybooks and quietly made history. Sophie Church 157-years on in the Ipswich Grammar School journey, history continues to be made. Buildings have been added and developed with the times, providing learning spaces for the 17,694 students who have walked through our doors, each leaving their own footprint in the story of IGS. #igsoldboys

04.01.2022 From the Vault Friday | As well as being part of the formal uniform, blazers serve an important function as a means of displaying a boy’s achievements. 04.01.2022 A world-first telemedicine program at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital is slashing waiting times for rural and remote Queenslanders needing diagnostic heart testing, allowing them to access specialised cardiac investigations close to home. Queenslanders living in remote areas are about 25 per cent more likely to die from heart disease than the state average, but long distances make them reluctant to travel for care. Now, a world-first program is changing all that.... RBWH Director of Cardiac Sciences and Old Boy Adam Scott (Class of 1992), who developed the award-winning program, said the hospital was performing more than 1700 heart procedures via telehealth in 22 bush communities annually. #igsoldboys Read more about Adam’s life-saving program in the link below. https://www.couriermail.com.au//5c5e8a9d82df944d20e3b45698.

01.01.2022 When the Rt Hon Sir Harry Talbot Gibbs KBE GCMG AC (Class of 1933) was the guest speaker at the 1981 IGS Speech Night he observed: I am here tonight because it is thought I am a successful Old Boy. It is not an accident that a school produces successful men. Of course, a good education does not guarantee either success or happiness, and the lack of an education is not necessarily a bar to either. But to have a good education is a great advantage when one thinks one has forgo...tten the details of what one learnt at school. Harry Gibbs took full advantage of that education and gave long and distinguished service to the nation in many fields: as a barrister; a member of the armed services; a member of the University of Queensland Faculty of Law; a Judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland, of the Federal Court of Bankruptcy and of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory; and as a Justice of the High Court and ultimately as Chief Justice of Australia. #igsoldboys Read more about Harry’s story in the link below: https://www.igsoldboys.com/the-rt-hon-sir-harry-talbot-gib/
