23.01.2022 Did you know we treat children? This little guy popped into the clinic this week for a treatment. We see many young children presenting with a wide range of common childhood conditions such as digestion issues, aches and pains and circulatory problems, as well as more complex conditions. Depending on the issue, we may suggest exercises to practice at home in addition to returning for follow-up treatments. We’ll always refer you to your GP if we feel that’s a more appropriat...e course of action. Children should not be treated with sharp or forcible manipulation. Our osteopaths use gentle treatments to ensure safe and effective treatment. To find out more send me a message or give us a call (07) 3202 2300. OsteoChris

22.01.2022 MOVEMENT IS MEDICINE! Sitting in awkward positions for long periods causes our bodies to ‘protest’, leading to pain, stiffness and headaches. Movement is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Alongside the extensive physical health benefits (reduction of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, metabolic disorders, musculoskeletal conditions and cancers), there are a multitude of emotional benefits too. ... Neurotransmitter release, including endorphins, explain the feel good factor of exercise. Even when injured (within reason), gentle movement is always recommended to facilitate recovery. Find an exercise that you enjoy to increase your likelihood of continuation and get moving! Osteo Chris

20.01.2022 April is #StressAwarenessMonth and today is StressAwarenessDay, so let's talk about a top tip for stress relief. Physical symptoms, such as stomach problems, headaches, or even chest pain are all symptoms of stress. For example both tension-type headache and migraine headache are associated with chronic muscle tension in the area of the shoulders, neck and head (which can be caused by stress). Musculoskeletal pain in the low back and upper extremities has also been linked to ...stress, especially job stress. A simple exercise that works well for my clients (and one I use myself) is slow breathing - a yoga technique called Pranayama breath. This simple technique always works for bringing the brain and the body back into coherence and can be used anytime, anywhere. This is what you do: - Breathe in for a count of 4 - Hold your breath for a count of 5 - And breathe out for a count of 7 Repeat 3 times. Pretty simple, but effective. For more stress management advice and for a free online stress test see https://www.stress.org.uk As always, if you are finding you need some extra help, book in and see me. OsteoChris

12.01.2022 HEADACHES As I said in my previous post, Headaches can be a real pain (excuse the pun again) but understanding what causes and contributes to them can help to manage them. Headaches fall into several different types. I’ve included a general overview below for your information. ... Tension Headaches a mild to moderate pain in a tight ‘band’ around the top of the head and behind the eyes. Migraines these are recurrent headaches with visual and/or GI disturbances. Normally sensitive to light and/or sound. Migraines can cause vertigo/dizziness. Some have prodromal symptoms that come before the headache such as a visual aura which can include tunnel vision, spots of visual loss and teichopsia (zig-zag lines). Many people identify triggers like stress, over or under-sleeping and certain foods (chocolate, red wine). Patients often describe a woozy or hangover like feeling after the main crux of the migraine has passed. Cluster Headaches these are recurrent episodes of excruciating pain over one side of head behind the eye. There may also be redness or tearing of the same eye. The episodes of these headaches are shorter than migraines (30-90mins) and reoccur several times a day, most commonly at night. Cervicogenic Headaches these come with a steady pain on one side of the head and face which worsens with coughing or sneezing. You may also experience a stiffening of your neck. These headaches can last a few hours up to a day. The cause of these headaches are thought to be caused by pain referral from the neck due to the anatomy of nerve convergence in the upper cervical spine (neck). Over time these headaches can become chronic. Trigeminal Neuralgia Headaches these headaches are caused by a disruption of the nerve that innervates the face. Symptoms are an electric-shock type pain in the face (usually one-sided) and made worse with contact (e.g. brushing teeth). Causes of these headaches can vary and should be investigated. Analgesia-Rebound Headaches these headaches unfortunately occur from abuse or the overuse of painkillers taken for migraine or tension headaches. When taking the analgesics is stopped, a headache is experienced. This can develop into chronic daily headaches. RED FLAGS when it comes to red flags and headaches, it is important to be aware and act on symptoms of the sudden onset of extreme pain; pupil changes e.g. pupil symmetry; confusion or speech problems, body weakness or loss of coordination; seizures; other systemic symptoms like a fever; thunderclap headache. This is not personal medical advice so please seek medical advice if you have any worries about headaches! If you are experiencing any of the above headaches and would like to talk through some treatment options, book in and see me. Osteo Chris
