24.01.2022 Radiator Flush vs. Radiator Clean Out A radiator flush is where high pressure water is pushed through the radiator to remove any loose debris which may be causing overheating problems. This is done by pushing high pressure water and air through the top radiator hose pipe, with loose debris coming out through the bottom radiator hose pipe. A radiator clean-out is done to remove debris caught in and blocking tubes in radiator - It can be performed on Copper/Brass radiators and... most plastic/aluminium radiators - Cannot be performed on full aluminium (Cost prohibitive) - Either top or bottom radiator tank is removed - Water is flushed from tank end to open end - A steel rod / strip is poked through each tube to remove any solid blockages in the radiator - Radiator tank is then replaced on radiator - It is then tested, with high pressure, for any leaks - Re-installed in your car or ready for you to install yourself These pictures show a radiator that is almost completely blocked and John cleaning out a radiator with a metal rod. 23.01.2022 This week, I will reflect on how radiator repair and supply has changed over the past 75 years (or at least the parts I am old enough to remember). In the past, most radiators were made from copper cores (middles) with brass tanks. These were primarily put together with lead solder. To pull apart these types of radiators, and we still do many of these each week, heat is applied to the joins to release the tanks. Tanks were then cleaned, mostly in an acid bath, then scrubbed... by hand with a wire brush, repaired, cleaned, and sometimes put into the solder dip to coat the tanks. All parts were then re-soldered ready for testing, painting, and collection or installation. I remember that my dad, Jeff, would sometimes use a 1 or 2 cent coin to solder in as a patch for any holes. Fortunately, we no longer need to use an acid bath to clean the tanks, instead we use a micro bead blaster to do the job, which is a less labour intensive and safer option. Other types of large truck and commercial vehicle radiators have bolt on tanks. In this case, parts are marked prior to pulling apart, they are disassembled completely to allow for cleaning and repairing any damaged radiator tubes, new gaskets are cut or obtained, and the radiator reassembled, tested and painted ready for collection. More modern radiators are made from aluminium cores, with plastic tanks. I remember when these were first introduced in the late eighties to early nineties, we thought that would be the end of our ability to clean or maintain our customer’s radiators. While it is more difficult to fix leaks in the core of the newer aluminium radiators, the most common problem with this type of radiator is that the inlet/top plastic tanks break over time. Special crimping tools were made available, and it is now common practice for staff to dismantle and clean these radiators, and on some vehicles, parts are available to replace the broken tanks. The increasing cost of heavy metals such as copper, brass, and lead that the old type radiators were made of make the new modern, plastic aluminium radiators much cheaper to replace than the earlier types. When looking to obtain a replacement radiator, we have several suppliers and always seek to use the best quality and value radiator for the vehicles that we source parts for. They are not created equal, and there are noticeable differences in the quality of similar products, both in weight and appearance.

19.01.2022 On April 9, 2021, Ipswich Radiator Works will be celebrating 75 years in business. We would love to see any photographs of the business in the early days, or to hear your early memories of the business. A short history from Jeff: Ipswich Radiator Works was originally opened by John Walker, who started his working life installing gas meters. He later joined the army and while there, was given the job of repairing radiators. After leaving the army, he started a radiator repair ...shop at the back of his father in-laws plumbing business in Waghorn Street. He started off slowly and at first used to ride around on an old motorbike with a side car, drumming up business and delivering jobs from there. The business grew and he eventually bought an old shop in Brisbane Street (where Ipswich Trophy Shop is now located). Over the years, as more people had cars and trucks, and with the help of his wife Ivy, they branched out into delivering industrial gas and welding equipment and then automotive parts. Eventually, John Walker retired from the business and the two parts of the businesses were separated, with the automotive accessories section taking on the name of Walker’s Auto Spares (now Burson's) Ipswich Radiator Works was sold to Bill and Joan Stokes, which is when I became the manager, having worked in the business for about 10 years. During Bill and Joan’s ownership, the Radiator Works moved to Darling Street, on the other side of the rail line. In 1999, due to poor health, the Stokes family sold the business to my wife and I, and in 2003 we moved to the larger, current premises in Turley Street. We ran the business until our retirement in 2017. My son in-law John, who started working in the business in 1983, has now taken over the running of the business. ~ Jeff (part of the business from 1971 until 2017) We are very proud to still be operating as a local, family owned business and thank you for your ongoing support. This is the only old photograph I could find relating to Ipswich Radiator Works. It was found on the Lost Ipswich Facebook Page.

14.01.2022 We are still open! Ready to provide expert advice and service for all of your automotive cooling requirements. We supply and install radiators for all makes and models of cars, as well as repair, manufacture and re-core radiators for cars, trucks, machinery and stationary engines.
14.01.2022 After years of service, your top radiator tank will become brittle with age. This is not specific to any make or model, is common to all modern vehicles and not... unusual. We are able to provide replacement plastic tanks for many, but not all, makes and models of vehicles. Dependent on the cost of a new tank for your vehicle, we may suggest a new radiator and will supply cost comparisons. When replacing a broken plastic tank on your car’s radiator, a full clean out of the radiator is completed. After clean out of radiator and new top tank is fitted, your radiator is tested under pressure for any leaks, ready for collection or re-installation in your vehicle. See more
