It tests the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. The tests cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and numeracy. NAPLAN is not a test that children can prepare for in the same way they might prepare for an end of term test. NAPLAN tests skills that develop and improve ove...r time. The more you read, especially novels and literary works, but also magazines and newspapers, the more words you'll be exposed to. As you read and uncover new words, use a combination of attempting to derive meaning from the context of the sentence as well as from looking up the definition in a dictionary. ___________________________________________________ 2 ...Keep a dictionary and thesaurus handy. When you uncover a new word, look it up in the dictionary to get both its pronunciation and its meaning. 21.01.2022 Strategies for Reading Shakespeare For some students, reading Shakespeare is like deciphering an alien language. It may seem like an exaggeration, but it’s not actually far off; languages are constantly evolving, and the English we speak now is incredibly different from the English of Tudor England. So don’t feel threatened by Shakespeare if you can’t understand his plays immediately: understanding his work is a process of practice and exposure. The following tips will hel...p ease your experience. 1. Understand the differences between ‘Thee’, ‘Thou’, ‘Thy’ and ‘Hath’. Shakespeare uses these phrases frequently throughout his works, so it is important to distinguish their meanings. ‘Thee’ and ‘Thou’ both mean ‘you’, however you use ‘thou’ if you are discussing the subject and ‘thee’ if you are discussing an object. For example: ‘Thou are hungry? I should have cooked food for thee.’ ‘Thy’ is understood as meaning ‘your’. E.g. ‘Thy face tells me you are hungry.’ And ‘hath’ means ‘have’. E.g. ‘You hath eaten?’ Understanding these words are important steps to interpreting Shakespeare. 2. Understand common contractions Shakespeare employed a lot of contracted words to fit into his meter and rhyme scheme. Although most words can be understood using contextual clues, it helps to understand his common contractions. These include: ‘Tis (it is), ne’er (never), a’ (he), e’en (even), know’st (know it), do’t (do it), be’t (be it). 3. Invert the grammatical order of sentences Most English speakers are familiar with a subject/verb sentence structure. Shakespeare sometimes strayed from this method of word ordering, placing the verb before the subject. Take for example: ‘Sometimes too cold the mouth of hell blisters.’ We can invert this sentence so that it reads: ‘Sometimes the mouth of hell blisters too coldly’. There is a lot more to understanding Shakespeare, but hopefully this helps your reading experience. Unfortunately there is no ‘shortcut’ to understanding Shakespeare, but it is a process of consistently reading and researching unfamiliar terminology. Cody

This is because they are both heavily revolved around recurring sequences and ordered designs, or a ‘pattern’. When considering the melody, structure and harmonies of a song, composers adopt a series of mathematical perspectives. These include note addition/subtraction, studying subdivisions and fractions in time signatures, and compositional patterns. There is also a strong cognitive link between the processing skills required for both subjects, particularly in the ability to change task demands. This further emphasises how both skills have correlated development. It is important for students and educators to consider the relationships between our topic areas, and not view subjects as linear fields. Creating subject connections can inspire interest in a topic, and can also reconceptualise certain ideas. This helps to create an engaging and holistic approach towards all topics involved. Cody

18.01.2022 Why Study Shakespeare? The works of William Shakespeare can often serve to alienate many students; this is mainly attributed to his unique and arguable archaic writing style. Shakespeare wrote almost entirely in iambic pentameter, also playing with sentence structuring and words. Students can often forget that Shakespeare’s plays were meant to be enjoyed in the context of live theatre, and once an understanding for Shakespeare’s wordplay has developed, an appreciation to...wards his texts as works of live theatre can be established. Once this language barrier has been surpassed, there are many facets of Shakespeare’s works that can be deeply appreciated. Here are a few reasons as to why Shakespeare is still profoundly relevant in the classroom. 1. Timeless motifs Shakespeare’s stories, and the characters within these stories, involve situations that reflect the human experience. Through exploring themes of heartbreak, political strife, greed-induced lust and vengeance, Shakespeare effectively explores universally relatable traits of human nature. Despite these texts being incredibly old, readers can still relate to the endeavours of Shakespeare’s characters. 2. His manipulation of the English language. Not only has Shakespeare invented approximately 1,700 of our most common words, as well as a wide range of commonly used phrases, but his powerful portrayals of poetry and prose can also be greatly appreciated in the classroom. The way he manipulates punctuation for rhythmic effect, his application of metaphors, malapropisms and double meanings, and simply the compelling nature of his storylines, make for excellent study material. Being able to analyse Shakespeare’s prose develops a literary prowess that can be applied to other works. 3. They’re entertaining! Going beyond Shakespeare’s ‘flowery’ language and eloquent writing style, it needs to be said his stories were genuinely compelling. It is not merely a topic. A strong thesis statement gives direction to the paper and limits what you need to write about. It also functions to inform your readers of what you will discuss in the body of the paper. Reflecting on personal experience and/or researching will help you know more information about your topic. This is because they are distancing from a wide-spanning narrative of cultural subjugation and abusive power relations. Postcolonial literature is the exploration of these peoples’ strive for equality, and gives a voice to the victims of European colonisation. As students encounter these texts in senior schools (particularly Ext...ension English I/II), they will come across stories born out of decades of struggle. Although postcolonial literature is dominated by themes of imperialism and racialism, the texts embody human qualities of justice, perseverance, and fairness. These texts act as inspiring pieces of political-activism, challenging the bigoted assumptions that justify colonialism. When encountering these texts, it’s important that students have an appreciation of their texts historical background. Whether it be an event fictional or non-fictional; a perspective literal or metaphorical: literary pieces are a statement of the artist. - It can therefore profoundly affect the reading experience to understand the circumstances that formed the composer’s statement. This is called context. ... - When studying the context of a piece of literature, say a novel, the student is seeking to understand what motivated the author to create their piece. Take for example George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’, a political novella which follows a group of farm animals who throw a mutiny against their human farmer. Whilst this plot does make for an enjoyable reading experience, a lot of the relevancy and meaning of ‘Animal Farm’ would be missing without any contextual information. - Readers need to be aware of the cultural, political and historical circumstances that inspire the inception of texts. For example, George Orwell’s background reveals that he was an opponent of social injustices, expressing his belief through prose. Having witnessed the terrors of Soviet-Communism, Orwell composed ‘Animal Farm’ as an allegory for the history behind its political leaders. - Having this context in mind completely reframes the reading experience, as readers can appreciate the use of fictional characters for political reasons.
