25.01.2022 Central Maitland will come alive for the 2016 Riverlights Multicultural Festival from 3.00pm to 9.00pm tomorrow. The event attracts thousands of people every ye...ar so it is important people know how best to get there. There are a number of car parking options available to festival goers. These include council car parks on Albion Street, St Andrews Street, Elgin Street and Sempill Street (behind Maitland Court House), as well as the riverside car park and the two storey car park on Ken Tubman Drive. Road closures will come into effect from 5.30am Saturday 8 October to 12.00pm Sunday 9 October. If you are driving please avoid Bulwer Street north of the Maitland Leagues Club entrance, The Levee Shared Zone between Elgin Street and Bourke Street, and Dransfield Lane. A reminder, too, that there is a permanent taxi rank outside Belmore Hotel that will be unaffected by the festival. For more information on the event go to www.maitlandriverlights.com.au

07.01.2022 AICN would like to express its appreciation to all Volunteers, Contributors, Sponsors and Guests for their contribution to the Nowruz Festival, (Persian New Year) on Friday 18 March 2016 at Civic Park, Newcastle. The event was an outstanding success because of all of your hard work. We have been able to convincingly showcase some of our Persian Culture to the Novocastrian community. Over 300 people attended the celebrations. The festival presented an opportunity to enjoy som...e of the colour, the music, the traditional artistic performance, the food and traditional customs of Persia. There were regional Persian dance performances on stage with stunning costumes, including a duo Azari dance, a Kurdish group dance and a solo classical folkloric dance. It was a lovely to listen to the nice sound of live-playing Santoor, one of the traditional Persian instruments as well as to contemporary live music. Traditional and contemporary Persian music played by popular Iranian DJ was enjoyed by the public. Zoorkhaneh, an ancient physical art form Persia, also called Persian Yoga was performed for the first time in Newcastle. 12 stalls displaying Persian goods, activities and businesses were presented to the public mostly staffed by volunteers; these included the traditional Haftsin table, AICN raffle, Persian calligraphy, learning Persian, Samira Fabric, Moj Ceramic Jewellery, Henna, Mahsa Jewellery, Soloki accounting business, Nik money exchange, Lollies 'R Us Persian grocery, and the activity table for children as well as food stores. The AICN raffle offered as prices 3 Persian hampers was sponsored by Lollies 'R Us. There was a second raffle offering an even bigger first price, free dinners for one year at The Persian Place restaurant, our main sponsor. The food stalls were excellent. The sponsor The Persian Place served Persian meat balls and Falafel. Sabzi caterers, Fanos catering and the tireless helpful Volunteers served other nice Persian food: Ash Reshteh, Potato Koko, Herbal Koko and sour cherry drink. The children’s activities included playing with clay and making nice objects with a range of pottery tools. The children received a small pot of sprouting wheat from Moj handmade ceramics, a symbol of spring, traditionally displayed at the time of Nowruz. Some event equipment was kindly made available by the Adamstown church, happy-days.com.au, APAC (Australian Persian Art Centre) and the City of Newcastle. Thank you to everyone who contributed, be it behind the scenes or in public. All your hard work has contributed to this event having been enjoyed by so many Novocastrians.
