25.01.2022 This morning I attended the Deaf CanDo Silent Breakfast. It was good fun learning some Auslan this morning and playing cultural awareness games. It gave everyone in attendance a greater appreciation for what it means to live in a world of silence. Representing Nat Cook Peter Malinauskas

25.01.2022 Is it any wonder that legislation for and about women is scant and unimportant. https://www.abc.net.au//sa-parliament-has-lowest-/12685928

21.01.2022 It’s International Dogs in Parliament Day I invited Archie in to visit me in Parliament today. Although he couldn’t enjoy a full tour of Parliament House due to covid restrictions, he did enjoy his visit to the city and being the centre of attention on Parliament House steps.

20.01.2022 Today is International Literacy Day One of my favourite hobbies is reading and over my time in parliament I have built up quiet a collection in my office! This years theme is Literacy Teaching and Learning in the COVID-19 Crisis and Beyond. With the continuous changes in our lives over the pandemic books have provided comfort to many and ensured that children and young people have been able to continue to learn.

17.01.2022 This week the parliament paid tribute to Vic Heron. Vic was my boss at the Federated Miscellaneous Workers' Union. He was a traditionalist when it came to running the union but a true progressive with equality in mind, ensuring workers rights.... Prior to his leadership all union officials in FMWU were men, however during his leadership 4 women officials were appointed. Decisions like this show the true quality of leadership Vic had and though a traditionalist he was responsive and supportive of change in the union and workplace. Vale Vic Heron. 16.01.2022 Last week I put to the parliament a motion, urging the Australian Government to join the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The Treaty prohibits nations from developing, testing, producing, manufacturing, transferring, processing, stockpiling, using or threatening to use nuclear weapons or allowing nuclear weapons to be stationed on their territory. Nations holding such weapons are to either remove them by a certain deadline or destroy them in accordance with a l...egally binding, time-bound plan. During a time such as now, with high geo-political tensions, it is more necessary than ever for Australian to support the disarmament of nuclear weapons. Thank you to ICAN Australia for their continued advocacy in this area.

15.01.2022 For too long the anti-abortion agenda has been amplified by some members of this parliament and has skewed others judgement on important social issues. The public no longer accepts the anti-woman sentiment that those opposing the Bill encourage. Even through my work in women’s health and the unions, I have never seen so much resistance to women and workers’ rights like what has been displayed by particulr members throughout this debate. ... This was an important win for all South Australians, especially women and workers.

15.01.2022 Another great win in the parliament this week with Teachers Registration Board Legislation passing the Lower House with amendments. The amendments ensure that the voice of the profession remains on the board. It will now go back to the Upper House where with support from South Australian Labor it will be passed and made an Act. 15.01.2022 It’s for these exact reasons the Wage Theft Committee is extending its terms of reference Current visa conditions create an environment where slavery and slavery like practices can be practiced. The intersection between wage theft and modern slavery needs to be addressed. As the wage theft committee continues its investigation, more cases such as the ones outlined in this article, will come out.... http://www.abc.net.au//backpacker-farm-workers-sp/12545294

12.01.2022 Great work QLD Labor

11.01.2022 Coronavirus has uncovered the ugly truths of workplace practices and the downfalls of current employment trends. Those working on the front line during this pandemic, are usually in industries that have high rates of casualisation. These rates of casualisation are unsustainable, unfair and dangerous for workers.... South Australia's current unemployment rate is 10.4%. Increasing employment opportunities means very little if the work is insecure and unsafe. It is not enough to just increase job opportunities, we must ensure South Australians have access to sustainable work. We need a holistic approach to improving employment opportunities otherwise workers will need to keep working 2 or more jobs to make a living. https://www.abc.net.au//single-workplace-hotel-q/12901828

10.01.2022 This is terrible news in a year full of terrible news. Vale RGB

10.01.2022 Yesterday, was the first time in many years that a woman sat in the President’s seat in the Legislative Council. Some members were caught off guard by the change and referred to me as Mr. Acting President. It is important for women to be visible in parliament.... Thank you Mr. President, The Hon. John Dawkins MLC, for the opportunity. BPW Australia Working Women's Centre SA Inc Women Lawyers Association of SA South Australian Labor Women's Network

10.01.2022 Safe Access Zones Has officially passed both Houses of Parliament! This is a great win for South Australians, especially women and workers. Tonight the parliament agreed that no one accessing abortion services should be harassed, intimidated or guilted by protestors.

03.01.2022 Yet another major instance of wage theft The Fair Work Ombudsman found Lush failed to provide its employees with a range of entitlements including minimum wage rates, rates for weekend and shift work, overtime rates and allowances. Record-keeping laws were also breached. Workers and the community don't accept the notion of wage theft. So why does our parliament?... https://www.theguardian.com//cosmetics-company-lush-admits

01.01.2022 Steven Marshall DOES have a privatisation agenda! This morning I met with tradies who will be impacted by the privatisation of DPTI facilities management services. Now more than ever we need to be putting workers first, not putting them out of a job.

01.01.2022 2020 has presented many challenges. These experiences have been compounded for women experiencing sexual harassment and gender based violence. Today is International Day to End Violence Against Women and the beginning of the annual campaign of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. More needs to be done to prioritize addressing violence against women in COVID-19 response and recovery efforts....
