04.01.2022 Australia's preference for bringing in more and more temporary residents to create a 'flexible' workforce and fill gaps in the labour market has backfired on thousands of skilled workers. Irish temporary residents, particularly those with children, have been left in a dreadful bind by the pandemic. The Australian government has essentially cut them loose, disingenuously claiming that they were only allowed in on the priviso that they could look after themselves. They are not covered by the Australian government's JobKeeper scheme or entitled to welfare. The Irish government's response seems focused only on extreme hardship cases. So many are forced to abandon their careers and lives and just leave. Good story here by Kate Nic Dhomhnaill in The Irish Times.
