22.01.2022 Is what you see ‘normal’? What’s your 3D vision like? Do you see ‘static’ or ‘dots’ in the environment or on things? Meet Karindy who only realized when wearing... the Irlen, colored lenses that her visual perception was ‘off’. Karindy is a Speech Language Pathologist who works with people with brain injuries. She knew some of her patients were experiencing visual perception issues, but then also started to suspect that she was after reading about symptoms of Irlen Syndrome. Karindy came to the Krist Samaritan Irlen Clinic (Houston/Galveston) to find her precise color combination to be worn as glasses. In the VIDEO she explains the way she experienced a ‘Van Gogh’ type environment, limited 3D vision and reduced clarity and how each color layer helped. 21.01.2022 More about lighting. Incandescent lighting has been banned because it is inefficient compared with fluorescent lighting. But it is much more comforting to the brain. Look at the distribution of wavelengths of light in incandescent lighting compared with daylight and then compared with modern fluorescent lighting. Remember, human and primate eyes developed in daylight for a million years, and in fire light for thousands of years.
20.01.2022 The first month of school has flown by. How are the students in your family coping? Are they still full of their holiday sparkle or are they already beginning to flag? Is there a sense of excitement or the hint of reluctance as they set off each day? For some people certain wave lengths of light act as a stressor on the brain and the visual information it receives is not correctly processed. The brain has to work much harder. Productivity is slowed down. Extra strain and... fatigue are noticeable. Anxiety, irritability and discomfort often become apparent. Irlen spectral filters (glasses) may reduce these symptoms. Could your student fit into this category? Check Irlen out. Colour is the key to success for many students (and adults!) P.S. If your child has already been diagnosed with Irlen Syndrome they may need a check-up. An annual visit to your Irlen Diagnostician is a wise move. 20.01.2022 The following is an extract from the Irlen International Newsletter. The Best Gift of the Season We received the following email from Lori Balbuena, Irlen Diagnostician in North Carolina. She was working with an 11 year old girl, who is in the 4th grade as she had been held back. When she read on white paper, she was pointing to each word she read and it was obvious that her eyes kept skipping down lines, reading a word and skipping down more lines. Out of ten lines perhaps ...fifteen words were read. When Lori laid the turquoise overlay on the paper, she leaned in, and just took off reading. It was a drastic change! Lori was crying and elated! Lori tried to talk to her, but the girl just wanted to keep reading and reading. It was so wonderful to see. Lori wrote that this was truly her most amazing experience as a diagnostician thus far. Later the little girl read for her teacher, and the teacher was totally awestruck! I feel I have received all the gifts I need this season." THIS IS NOT UNUSUAL! THE WORDS SCRAMBLE, GO FUZZY, SHIMMER, UNTIL THE CORRECT OVERLAY OR LENS IS USED. THEN IT BECOMES CLEAR!
19.01.2022 Meet Will. Will is a 10 year old student in Year 5 at school who is finding school work, especially literacy, very difficult. During the assessment, I placed a chart with random letters on it, in size 28 font, one metre away across the desk. He couldn't read them! He said the letters were swapping places and go all blurry and were very confusing. There was a lot of eye strain. Will has a current optometric assessment and wears glasses. After working with coloured plastic ove...rlays, and later with tinted lenses (Spectral Filters), Will could easily read all the letters on the chart, and read fluently from a passage of text. What does this mean? It means that Will has the intellectual capacity to read properly, but there is a barrier to him using this. The words become jumbled, they change places, they go out of focus, they lift off the page. This is in spite of his eye sight working properly. The problem lies in the brain, not in the eyes. Light causes Visual Stress (a Visual Processing Difficulty) leading to distortions. Changing the wavelength of light (colour) which enters the brain can remove the symptoms. The future: Will's future is bright! But, without this intervention, Will would continue to struggle, with nobody understanding what was wrong, his self esteem would plummet, and he would think he was "dumb and stupid". Many boys (and some girls) would become behaviour problems because they cannot see that school is helping them in any way. We know from previous studies and statistics, that there are 4 or 5 students in every class who have problems like Will, and almost all of them will remain undiagnosed and never reach their potential. What a waste!!
18.01.2022 So very true! There are Irlen Clinics all over Australia. If in Queensland contact Peter Freney [email protected]

15.01.2022 What do actor Paddy Considine and actress Lucy Lawless have in common besides staring in movie and TV series? They are both outspoken advocates for proper diagn...osis of a condition called Irlen Syndrome or scotopic sensitivity syndrome, which has impacted both their lives. Paddy was diagnosed at 37 years old, after many years as a successful and awarding winning actor, with Asperger's Syndrome and Irlen Syndrome. Irlen Syndrome or photophobia has unknowingly caused him severe anxiety and sensory overload all his life. Once properly diagnosed by a trained Irlen Diagnostician, Helen Irlen, he receive Irlen tinted lenses worn as glasses and contact lenses. His life immediately changed in extraordinary ways. He became calmer within minutes and benefits kept growing the more he wore the tinted lenses which calmed down his nervous system by filter out adverse spectral bands of light and intensity. He became more focused and could relate to people and events with greater connection, less frustration and anxiety. He is visibly happier, and his friends and fellow actors, verify the positive changes. He states that when he wears his tinted lenses, mostly as contact lenses, it is like a weight is lifted and life is so much more enjoyable with much more laughter. He can work more efficiently with greater endurance and less stress. Lucy Lawless , another very successful actress, could not understand why her children had so many learning challenges that could not be explained or remedied. Once they were properly diagnosed with Irlen Syndrome and began wearing tinted lenses, reading and attention immediately improved. The positive impact on their lives has been profound. Lucy now is a passionate advocate to educate parents and professional about Irlen Syndrome. She wants all teachers and therapists working with children and adults with learning challenges, including dyslexia and ADD, to be trained to diagnose this condition. Irlen Method can also help improve symptoms related to autism, chronic migraine/headaches, brain injuries, stroke, and visual stress and distortions, especially when working or learning under fluorescent or bright lights, and at the computer screen or reading black letters on white background. Immediate improvements and often elimination of symptoms can be achieved in one or two testing sessions using the Irlen filters and environmental modifications (using dimmable LED light bulbs, colored paper, decreasing glare, wearing a baseball cap, etc) at home, school, work or in the community. It is drug-free and cost-effective, with over 30 years of international research including military, public school, prison school, medical centers, vocational rehabilitation, and university research centers. There are Irlen Clinics throughout the USA and in 47 countries, with millions of people of all ages benefitting from Irlen Testing and Technology. 15.01.2022 What a great summary of Irlen Syndrome. We see this quite often in our clinic.
15.01.2022 Lighting - why do some people find artificial lighting difficult? Maybe because the wavelength distribution is very different to daylight. Some people are sensitive to certain wavelengths of light (colours) and artificial light could contain more of those wavelengths. Look at the distribution of wavelengths of light (colours) in daylight and in LED lighting.
13.01.2022 Do you suffer with migraines ? Migraines are said to be caused by a number of factors like hormonal imbalances, changes in sleep patterns, stressful environment, physical exertion and more. One of the biggest symptoms and triggers for migraine sufferers is light sensitivity. Irlen Spectral Filters can help migraine suffers by eliminating the rays of light which are creating stress on the brain calming the brain function.... Check out the video below. 13.01.2022 The best way to see Van Gogh's "Starry Night". Stare at the center of the spiral for 30 seconds and then look at the painting!
13.01.2022 We often hear that Irlen Syndrome has no scientific research to back it up. Here is one article by a well respected Clinical Psychologist. Irlen Syndrome and the Neuroelectrical Effect By Andrew Yellen, Ph.D. | Submitted On March 19, 2009 Irlen Syndrome is a hereditary, visual-perceptual problem that prevents an estimated 14-18% of the population from being able to read efficiently. Irlen Syndrome is not a vision problem of the eye. Irlen Syndrome is the visual-pe...Continue reading
13.01.2022 Here is a testimonial from a recent client - adult female. I was in grade three when I started to really struggle with reading. The class was at the stage where we were going from readers with a few large words, to readers with smaller letters and more words. Our reading became more about fluency than character recognition. I remember when we were shown the shelves in the library that we should be taking our new readers from. I tried the new readers but it was too much for...Continue reading

11.01.2022 Check out the extensive bibliography of Irlen research. It's amazing how adjusting the way the brain filters certain colours in the light spectrum can make such a huge difference to the health, wellbeing and literacy of the 15% of the general population and 50% of the learning difficulties population who have the light sensitivity condition, Irlen Syndrome. If you'd like to know more go to www.irlenclinic.com.au and take the self test.
11.01.2022 I will be visiting Brisbane (Capalaba) on Friday 31st August to conduct a clinic for those with learning/reading difficulties, headaches, light sensitivity or any other Visual Processing problems. Ring the clinic (5445 2458) to schedule an appointment.
10.01.2022 Reading can be tough for kids with Irlen syndrome. So many educators and parents get frustrated that the child is struggling and often lack empathy or understanding. Some make comments like if you practice everyday reading out you'll get better, for someone without Irlen syndrome. very hard to read or concentrate when the words are moving, swirling, dancing or flickering, bright lights, stark white paper and whiteboards are almost intolerable. Headaches, nausea. dizziness, fatigue, poor concentration, disruptive behaviour, anxiety and low self esteem are common signs in children who struggle with the light sensitivity.. Fortunately there is an easy and non invasive solution. Irlen Spectral Filters help by filtering out the waves of light that are causing stress to the brain. www.irlenclinic.com.au P.07 5544 2458
09.01.2022 What a great National AAIC conference with subject matter experts, sharing their ideas in on Irlen Syndrome, light sensitivity, visual dyslexia, learning difficulties, acquired brain injury and how Diagnosticians can support National Irlen Awareness. 07.01.2022 READING GRANDMAS Have you seen where Anastasia is spending $1.5 million on training grandmas and other people to read to students in school? On the face of it, that's not a bad idea. But it assumes something - that all children are approaching the reading task with the same physiological capabilities - good vision and hearing. If we focus on the vision part - and remember that 70 to 80 percent of everything that goes into our brain goes through the vision system - good eye si...ght is important. BUT eyesight is only part of seeing - the other part is Visual Processing, the way the message flows from the eye to the brain. Many students (and adults) have good eyesight, but poor Visual Processing. So, even though they have a current optometric check, the print still looks jumbled and messy. They find it very hard to read or concentrate when the words are moving, swirling, dancing or flickering, especially under bright lights, with stark white paper and whiteboards. Headaches, nausea. dizziness, fatigue, poor concentration, disruptive behaviour, anxiety and low self esteem are common signs in children who struggle with Visual Processing. So until this is corrected (see www.irlenclinic.com.au) all the grandmas in the world won't help these students. See more
06.01.2022 There have been recent posts on Irlen pages about how Ophthalmologists are opposed to Coloured Lenses and overlays to help with eye strain, headaches and reading problems. They cite "no credible evidence". However, in the reviews, they conveniently omit those studies which don't suit their preconceived viewpoint. Historically, ophthalmologists often oppose new techniques and procedures which they think intrudes upon their area of expertise. In the first half of the 20th Centu...ry they were stridently opposed to optometry which was an emerging profession. See the article below which refers to the United States experience. History of Optometry David A. Goss, O.D., Ph.D. Lecture Handout Lectures in V578, Public Health Policy and the Optometric Profession November 18 and 20, 2003 Thomas Hall Shastid quotation in Borish article, Indiana Journal of Optometry, Fall, 2001, p. 24: I believe Shastid is referring to a period in the early 20th century. (Note: For MD’s read Ophthmologists.) Ed. "The M.D.s generally would not recognize even the existence of such a thing as eyestrain....If there was any worse quackery than this of the regular medical profession, I do not know what it was. Yet they called quacks those of us who fitted glasses to the eyes of the young....There were certain traveling spec-peddlers who went from house to house fitting glasses and, unskillful though they were, they relieved many of the simpler cases of eyestrain and headache. Such men, speaking generally, excited extreme contempt and bitterness on the part of the regular medical profession, feelings which grew the more the spec-peddlers best these scientific M.D.s at the treatment of eyestrain and its numerous results....Hardly anything that now I can recall served so much to weaken the standing and influence of physicians in any community than this absurd, ridiculous, hard-headed, stubborn...opposition to the fitting of glasses." In 1947, Briscoe presented a plan for an optometry school at IU (Indiana University) to the IU Board of Trustees and the Trustees approved it. But later, due to medical school opposition, the Trustees rescind their motion. Indiana optometrists tried unsuccessfully for many months to convince ophthalmologists at IU School of Medicine of the importance of an optometry school. As American ophthalmologists started realizing the importance of spectacles, they learned the methods of refraction from optometrists - quotation on pages 136-137 of Hirsch and Wick discusses how the McAllisters taught oculists how to do refractions. References Borish IM. Optometry: Its heritage and its future. Indiana J Optom 2001;4(2):23-31.
