24.01.2022 WHY SHOULD PEOPLE GET THEIR IRLEN TINT CHECKED REGULARLY? There are a number of reasons that the tint should be checked and these include the following: * If yo...u get a new prescription that is stronger than your previous one, it can affect the Irlen tint required. * The tint can fade over time, and it is usually so gradual, that it is not noticed until it gets so bad that the Irlen symptoms return. *With children in particular, as they grow, their brains develop and their perception changes. This can definitely influence the tint required. * The workload may change, so the demands on the brain are increased, and it may require a different tint. * Lighting changes in the office or home can influence how the Irlen tints help. * The brain "calms" down with the Irlen tint, and sometimes, once it calms more permanently, the tint required will change. * If a child begins to complain about tiredness, headaches or sore eyes after wearing their tints for a while, it is an indicator that the tint may not be appropriate now. * If a child who has always worn their tints, but is now reluctant to wear them, it is an indication that the tint may not be correct for them now. * If a student has good results, and still continues to wear their tints, but their results start to fall, that is an indicator that the tint may need to be changed. All of the above are really important for parents, in particular to be aware of, because children are not going to self report that something has changed. Sometimes they do eventually, but it is usually after a number of months of struggling. To ensure that the child's tint is always the optimum one, it is important to have the recheck done at between 18 months to 2 years after first getting the lenses. EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT COMPLAINING, THE TINT SHOULD BE CHECKED. 08.01.2022 HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHY FLUORESCENT LIGHTS CAUSE SO MANY PROBLEMS FOR LOTS OF PEOPLE? Many people suffer from a visual processing disorder known as Irlen Syn...drome, which is made worse when reading or writing under fluorescent lights. So WHY is this? Fluorescent lighting has been in use for approximately 60 years and has become the "lighting of choice" in virtually every business, home and increasingly, in schools. Prior to this, we had incandescent lighting, which was not the same, but very similar to the spectra of sunlight. All light is made up specific energy waves and these form the colours that we see in the rainbow. Each colour has a specific wavelength, and this determines how much energy each colour has. Normal sunlight has a fairly even distribution of these wavelengths of light and that is known as the "visible spectrum" and is the only part of the energy coming to us from the sun that we, as humans, can "see". Fluorescent lights however, do not have an even distribution of these wavelengths of light (colours) and instead have many parts of the spectrum missing and for some, they are just narrow "peaks". So, when we are using white paper under fluorescent lighting, our brains are exposed to an abnormal spectra, that for some, cause visual distortions or actual discomfort. That is why, for children who may have Irlen Syndrome, it is more damaging to force them to read and/or write under fluorescent lighting. It actually makes their symptoms worse. To understand how important lighting is to those with Irlen Syndrome go to www.irlendyslexia.com Go to the following link to read about the differences between sunlight and fluorescent lights. https://neurosciencenews.com/inflammation-immune-system-fl/ #fluorescentlighting #spectrumoflight #sunlight #incandescentlights #visualprocessing #irlensyndrome
