25.01.2022 Does your child work really hard at school but makes little to no process? Do they complain they can't read cause the words play tricks on them? Do they say ...the print looks blurry even though they have perfect vision? Are they constantly fidgeting? Do they have trouble completing their work in time? If so, they might have a visual processing disorder known as Irlen Syndrome which causes light sensitivity, print distortions and poor handwriting. More information at www.aaic.org.au #fidgeting #learning #learningdifficulties #learning #reading #schoolchildren #dyslexia #PoorHandwriting #schoolfatigue #glare

23.01.2022 Checking out your eyesight is the first stage to road safety. But did you know you can have perfect 20/20 vision and still experience blur, distortion, double v...ision, night blindness, white out with the sun? Irlen syndrome can seriously affect your judgment, confidence and driving ability . More and more driving instructors are becoming more aware and suggesting Irlen screening (in the first ins). I have had clients referred by instructors who will not continue with the lessons until the problem is sorted out. Irlen filters can be worn at night (I wear mine I see no colour) Happy to talk . 20.01.2022 I will have my Irlen brochures with me tomorrow at the Cotters market if any one would like to come passed for a chat. I want to share what the mother of a rece...nt client shared when she brought her daughter in for me to check the tint colour of her lenses. Her daughter has been wearing Irlen lenses for four years and her parents are delighted with the improvement in her school grades. The mother went on to say that the first noticeable improvement had been in her daughter's behaviour. She went from a difficult demanding child to a happy little girl who was a delight to have around. Interestingly, she added that even now if her daughter does not wear her glasses for four or five hours they will know from the deterioration in her behaviour. Even the daughter said she can feel it happening and knows she must put on her glasses. See more

20.01.2022 I WORK OUT THE ANSWER BUT WHEN I WRITE IT DOWN, I MAKE A MISTAKE! This happens to many students (both children and adults) who have a problem with their Visual... Processing that results in symptoms identified as Irlen Syndrome. This can happen when doing both mathematics and literacy. In the case of mathematics, the calculated answer may be "638" but when written it may be written as "386" and the person's brain DOES NOT recognise the error. The same thing can happen when writing sentences. The person creates the sentence in their head, but when they write that sentence on paper, the words can be written in the wrong order, so that the sentence does not make sense. This is very frustrating for the person involved, and actually interferes with their progression in any academic situation because the teacher does not know that this is happening. In other words, a person can be quite smart and intelligent, but because of the Visual Processing difficulty, they CANNOT show this on paper. All of the information that I have written above is about writing on WHITE PAPER! Generally, once the correctly coloured paper is used instead of white, these errors do not occur. WHY?? On white paper, the brain is distracted by the white, so by using coloured paper, the brain is NOT DISTRACTED, and can focus on the task at hand. #getsmathswrong #knowstheanswerbutwritesitincorrectly #sentencesdonotmakesense #getstherightanswermentallybutnotonpaper. #dyscalulia #dyslexia #dyslexiaawareness #irlensyndrome #visualprocessing for further information on the problems caused by Visual Processing go to http://ow.ly/b3bo50BIsUL

17.01.2022 HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR CHILD TO BECOME MORE CONFIDENT AT SCHOOL? If your child is having problems reading at their current class level, then look for a book that... they feel comfortable reading and that is at an earlier level. It is important that they can experience success when reading. If they are trying to read at a level above their reading ability, they will be making mistakes, someone who is listening will be saying NO and correcting their mistake too frequently, and eventually, your child will give up and refuse to keep reading. Remember, SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS! You need to find the reading level where your child can read without too many mistakes. Even when they do make mistakes, DO NOT CORRECT THEM EVERYTIME THAT THEY MAKE A MISTAKE! That is just destroying their confidence. Leave any corrections until the end of the paragraph or page and then go back and ask them to look at the word again, and tell you what it is. There is a very high chance that they will not get the word wrong when they are looking at it in isolation. It is often when they are reading along the line, tha they make mistakes, and this is often their reading "technique" rather than them not knowing the word. Ask them to make sure that they look at each word with their eyes as they move along the line (a bit like pointing with their finger, but in this case, they are simply pointing with their eyes), and also, take the pressure off them in terms of fluency. Being accurate is much more important than fluency when they are learning to read. It is no good having a fast reading rate when most of the words being read are incorrect. This is the best way to increase their confidence when reading. It is important for you to be your child's "helper" and support. #readingfluency #makesmistakes #sayswrongword #leaveswordsout #putswordsinwhenreading #getswordsmixedup #reversesletters #getsbanddmixedup http://ow.ly/Pw0h50BCeGY has self tests that can be used to investigate Irlen Syndrome

17.01.2022 In just the same way you get your Rx (eye prescription) checked each year, in case your EYES HAVE CHANGED, it is recommended that you get your Irlen color (worn... in glasses) checked, in case YOUR BRAIN CHANGES. Common factors for brain change include: natural brain development with age (growth spurts), being on different medications, illness, experiencing concussions/TBI, hormonal changes. Adele first came to the Houston/Galveston Irlen Clinic when 8 years old, and blue was the color. The following year it was grey-blue. Mom and Adele didn’t expect much of a change this year, but being 10 years there had been a growth spurt and orange lenses were the result! This color, when compared with the old one, made the page stop ‘glowing’, didn’t feel dark indoors and made eyes feel SO comfortable. To get tested (or re-tested) at the Houston/Galveston Clinic please fill out a contact form http://www.yaxley-irlen.com/contact.php or call 832 720 3071 (and leave a message)

17.01.2022 Reminder with the new school year, it might be time for a re-check of tint colours. Tints can fade over time, as well changes can be caused by hormones changes, eg puberty, or even medication. Often a first indicator is that you or your child start to perceive the tint colour or headaches re-occuring! For those who are struggling to afford frames I am starting to build up a collection of donated frames that are available to clients free of charge. If you have spare frames ...in good condition you are welcome to drop them off at the Clinic next time you visit! 14.01.2022 Irlen Syndrome can even cause aching hips and back aches - please read: Last month Madeline was diagnosed with Irlen Syndrome which is a perceptual processing ...disorder. When she was six she was diagnosed with migranes. Often times they're severe, but most of the days of her life she's had headaches, many days nausea. She's also dyslexic (but she's worked through that and now she's an avid reader and writer--thank you "Gift of Dyslexia" by Ronald Davis). Because of Covid, it's taken a long time to see a diagnostician, but the other day Madeline finally got her IRLEN tinted lenses. The changes has been amazing! The first thing she said when she put them on was that her head and her eyes didn't hurt! Then she was walking around and said, "The floor is flat!" That's right--she always saw the floor as slanted! I didn't know that! She didn't know that wasn't normal! Because of that, her hip isn't hurting when she walks because she's not off balance anymore. When she reads a book the words are no longer moving (the words used to go towards the sides of the pages so there would be white rivers down the middle of the page). Her eyes don't hurt when she looks at the computer, phone, or tv. She's finding that she's not as clumsy because her depth perception is corrected. And speaking of depth perception, they told us to not have her drive without her glasses. Good call, as she was having a hard time gauging how close she was to the stop sign (even though she passed her test). She's telling us about all these changes and what she's seeing now as opposed to what she used to see. I had no idea! To her credit, she's done a fantastic job working through these issues all these years. I'm so thankful that we now know what she's been dealing with and it was a rather simple fix! Thank you, Lord! So if you know of anyone that's dealt with these types of problems please tell them about Irlen Syndrome and encourage them to see an actual Irlen screener or diagnostician. This is not an eye problem or reading problem. Eye doctors and reading specialists will not be able to offer adequate help with this disorder. See this website for more info on other symptoms. There are some simple self tests to get a person started, and there's also a demonstration of what a page of words may look like to people with Irlen. (FYI Madeline would see rivers and swirls which she never knew was not normal.) https://irlen.com https://irlenballarat.com.au/

12.01.2022 Do you get HEADACHES or feel sick when under bright or fluorescent lights? This is a symptom of Irlen Syndrome, also known as Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome. 11.01.2022 Research has shown that approximately 1 in 5 people have symptoms of the Visual Processing Disorder known as Irlen Syndrome. That means that there is a very hig...h chance that one of these children may be experiencing those symptoms. These can include light sensitivity, visual discomfort when reading from white paper under bright lights, words changing places on the page, words disappearing, words moving so close together that they hide the gap between them, letters changing places within the words so that they are unrecognisable, headaches every day, sore eyes, excessive fatigue as the day progresses, all of which, either together or in combination can result in reading or learning difficulties. The SAD THING is that the kids think that all of this happens to everyone, so they DO NOT TELL THE TEACHER OR THEIR PARENTS, so nobody understands WHY they are having so many problems! #readingproblems #readingdifficulties #cannotread #hatesreading #willnotread Further information is available from the following website www.irlendyslexia.com See more

10.01.2022 MY SON IS STRUGGLING AT SCHOOL BUT I KNOW HE IS REALLY SMART. THERE IS SOMETHING THAT I CAN'T WORK OUT THAT IS HOLDING HIM BACK! This is a common concern expres...sed by many of our parents when they come to the clinic. They have usually been to Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Optometrists, School Counsellors and any other professional EXCEPT a Visual Processing Specialist (an Irlen Diagnostician). When they have tried all other specialists, they are at the point of just willing to try anything, so they eventually find their way to us. These children are usually experiencing visual distortions on the page or suffering discomfort whenever they look at white paper. They don't tell anyone what happens for them when they are reading or writing because they think that everyone sees things as they do, so they don't query it. Visual Processing Disorder cannot be identified by any standardised educational or psychological tests currently available so the ONLY WAY to determine whether the child's learning difficulties are the result of Visual Processing problems is to have them assessed by an Irlen Syndrome professional. If their problem is not identified they often become the victim of ridicule by their peers. This is then the beginnings of decreasing self esteem and confidence. #irlensyndrome #poorselfesteem #lowselfconfidence #hastroublereading #hatesreading #visualprocessingdisorder #headaches #eyestrain for further information go to www.irlendyslexia.com

09.01.2022 Recheck Assessments are necessary every 2 years regardless of whether you feel as though the Irlen Lenses are still helping. When Abbey was retested recently, ... on changing her colour slightly she exclaimed "Better! Yes! Oh wow! First diagnosed in 2007, Abbey has returned every couple of years to have a retest to make sure the colour is correct so she can operate to the best of her ability, initially at school, now in her everyday life. The colour required can change over time and may also fade, so whilst the lenses still may be helping, they may not be optimal. Abbey is thrilled with her new glasses "Seeing the world through my new rose coloured glasses" as she likes to say

07.01.2022 WHY DIDN'T I KNOW THAT MY DAUGHTER WAS STRUGGLING WITH HER STUDIES? Many parents tell us that they thought that their child was coping well at school because th...e teacher had told them that they were doing OK. However, at the end of the year, their teacher advised them that their child was not at the expected level of reading ability. This left the parents feeling very frustrated because if they had known earlier in the year, they would have done whatever was necessary to help them. Many parents found that their child was not coping with their schoolwork when they had to do homeschooling during the Covid 19 restrictions. So, as a parent, question your child's teacher as much as you can to find out how your child is doing at school. #poorlearning #poorreader #cannotread #irlensyndrome #visualprocessingdisorder #strugglingtolearn If you would like to learn more about Irlen Syndrome which is a Visual Procesing Disorder go to http://ow.ly/Z1mi50DebAA

07.01.2022 Although I have been doing this for twenty years I am never totally prepared for the comments from clients when they return for a colour check after several yea...rs. Earlier this week, a client in her late thirties returned and in the process of checking the tint she shared her story. Prior to her first Irlen filters she had suffered from severe migraines to where she would need to be taken to hospital to stop the vomiting. As a mother of four children you can imagine how hard that would be. Since wearing her Irlen filters that had not happened as she had not experienced a severe migraine in four years. Someone else had told me a similar story but I was not prepared for what she told me next. On the odd occasion when she forgot to put her glasses on and she started to feel the beginning of a migraine, instead of taking 4 tablets which she had had to do before, all she needed to do was put on her Irlen glasses and the migraine would completely go away. When I hear these results I feel even more determined to share this information about light sensitivity and how it can affect lives.

06.01.2022 This young man showed such a remarkable improvement today when he read with his newly selected Irlen tint that I wanted to share. For more information contact Gladstone Irlen Clinic on 0404912160.

06.01.2022 Irlen Lenses Do Not Teach you to read, they only allow the person to see the print clearly and make the page more comfortable to look at. Once kids and adults g...et their lenses they sometimes expect that they will be instantly good readers. While reading is easier and more comfortable there are also alot of bad reading habits that need to be overcome. For children extra intervention may be needed with phonics, sight words and word attack skills in order to improve reading skills and comprehension. Adults may also need extra assistance to improve reading skills. Once reading is improved children and adults can start to succeed academically. #reading #read #learningdisabilities #dyslexia #school #specificlearningdifficulties #school #schoolfatigue #headaches #PoorComprehension More information on Irlen Syndrome at www.aaic.org.au

06.01.2022 I tested a Year 2 boy recently who struggles a lot with reading! He resisted looking at the page throughout the assessment, his body language suggesting he was ...experiencing discomfort. He kept looking away, rubbing his eyes saying it hurt his eyes to look at the page. He said the words all mashed up and looked fuzzy. All that changed when we found a specific overlay which not only allowed him to comfortably look at the page, but also enabled him to read! We were all so astounded, because he read quite well and wanted to continue to read. He said the words weren't fuzzy anymore and he could see the words clearly. Mum just couldn't believe it because getting him to do any reading had been an impossible task causing them both frustration. He was very happy and excited to get his irlen lenses and get on with reading! And so was mum!! See more

05.01.2022 I love my work.

04.01.2022 Why didn’t my daughter tell me the words were moving when she was reading? Why didn’t she tell me her eyes became sore when trying to read words on white pages ...and screens? Why didn’t she tell me she was often tired after school? BECAUSE SHE DIDN’T KNOW ANY DIFFERENT! This was always NORMAL for her. If words are doing crazy things when a child reads, their eyes can become sore, they can tire after school and may avoid homework. These are signs and symptoms of Irlen Syndrome. Irlen Syndrome is often a missing link for students who have difficulty with: reading, recognising words, concentration, eye strain and fatigue. Irlen Syndrome can make reading so difficult, the last thing a child wants to do after school is read, have to concentrate and complete homework. Irlen Lenses can eliminate distortions with print, eye strain when reading and fatigue after school. They can improve concentration, comprehension and take away the effort required when reading. Visit our website for more information. www.sidc.net.au

01.01.2022 CAN THE GLARE OF BRIGHT LIGHTING, REFLECTED FROM A WHITE PAGE MAKE MY CHILD FIDGETY AND RESTLESS AT SCHOOL? If your child is experiencing the symptoms of the Vi...sual Processing disorder that is identified as Irlen Syndrome the answer is YES! I saw a little boy today who is in Kindergarten and is obviously quite smart, but his writing is poor, and he is struggling to read efficiently. He has trouble concentrating in class and his work does not demonstrate his intelligence. When he begins to read, the words and the letters move so much that he has trouble identifying them correctly. On top of that, the words and lines that he looks at are blurry and look wavy. Despite this, he was able to read a Kindergarten level book when we used an appropriately coloured overlay that was put on top of the page and removed the glare from the white paper. The first thing that the teacher suggested was to have his eyes tested by an optometrist because poor eyesight is the OBVIOUS first thing to consider. Despite receiving a prescription which magnified the words slightly, the word still moved and were blurry. If you have a child that you suspect may be experiencing the things that this little boy experiences, consider that he/she may have a Visual Processing Disorder. Optometrists, psychologists, doctors, speech therapists and occupational therapists DO NOT have the training to identify Visual Processing Difficulties as the reason for a child's reading/learning difficulties. #dyslexia #visualprocessingdisorder #readingdifficulties #learningdifficulties #poorconcentration #cannotread #cannotrememberwhathehasread #lightsensitivity #soreeyesatschool #poorcomprehension #irlensyndrome #scotopicsensitivitysyndrome For further infomation about Visual Processing Disorder go to www.irlendyslexia.com and do the self-test to see if your child has the symptoms of Irlen Syndrome See more
